I always loved the game Othello and I usually win vs humans but the Neo Geo Pocket game 'Pocket Reversi' has convinced me that I have never been worse at anything in my life than I am at this game. I have even tried to read up on technique and I can only beat the easiest opponent consistently. It's kind of a tradition for me to lose at this game because long ago I used to get schooled by the NES AI too.

Back in 1992, when releasing Windows 3.1, Microsoft chose to remove the game "Reversi" from the system. So, today, while sorting through various versions of Windows 3.0, I am also checking out the different revisions of REVERSI.EXE.
Interestingly, there's an upgraded (grey) version of Reversi for Windows 3.1, which seems to be no longer compatible with the original Windows 3.0 or 3.00a. When I tried to run it, it just threw an error message in my face.

Just a little bit of progress on that little side project from the weekend.
I've abstracted it out enough that all of the logic for interacting with the board can be dropped into whatever GUI you want. Maybe I should stick it in #Godot!
Game state still only sits at an array of 128-byte records. Everything about the game is controlled by the number of played turns.
I'd wager the regex structure I'm using to parse the input uses more memory thana full game would.

#Misskey recently got some new cool stuff called #MisskeyGames where you can play #BubbleGame (a #SuikaGame / #WatermelonGame clone) and #Reversi. A #Mahjong game is also planned in the next major release. We haven't upgraded our instance yet though (I think we will get the latest version either this Friday or next week, since we will be moving this server from #FreeBSD to #Linux), so they're not yet available here. -

I've created an #Othello #AI that can easily kick my butt. This is probably the AI I'm using in my #PICO8 entry in #AGBIC 2023.
It uses the standard #minimax #algorithm (actually #negamax) with alpha-beta pruning. No transposition tables yet (mainly because I don't yet know how they work).
It takes only a few seconds to make a move (though I made a few cutbacks to get it that fast), which will hopefully mean it's fast enough on PICO-8.
