Crazy thought: On X11, you could totally do a gradually changing day-and-night bitmap wallpaper using a #1Bit xbm wallpaper and manually, gradually setting the foreground and background colors with a script throughout the day. Basically, 1-bit color with palette manipulation
With the right image, that would look pretty badass, IMHO.

Credit where credit is due.
She did absolutely amazing things with 32x32 #1bit pixel grids/bitmaps.
(And of course, many other media)
I only saw the original "Japanese comb lady" artwork a few years ago, and marveled at how faithful her #monochrome recreation was.
She also did the Windows 3.0 icons, and many other instantly recognizable things, but somehow her monochrome work was always my favorite.
The tight artistic constraint brought out her real creative genius.

after discovering Trici Venola’s 1-bit art from the 80s, I was excited to learn that she was featured in (what became) an extremely obscure artist journal - Verbum. she got an entire chapter in the Verbum Book of Digital Painting, along with other exceptional macpaint artists such as Bert Monroy, Junko Hoshizawa, and Martin Speed among many others.
there are very few printed books on 80s pixel art, and i’m overjoyed that this one turned out to be equal parts technical/stylistic manual, and pixel art gallery.
the best part of the book are the step by step drawing demonstrations by each artist. you really get a sense for their method and practice.

found this hidden gem on the garden. it's a japanese hypercard game called Summer Vacation - Search for the Golden Beetle (夏休み・黄金のかぶと虫を探して, Natsuyasumi - kogane no kabutomushi o sagashite)
the pixel art is just insane - such a careful balance of positive and negative space in each rendering.
it plays very much like early Cyan games like The Manhole - pure exploration. thank you macgarden archivist baku for finding, buying, and preserving this incredible gem.

thank you @1Bit for introducing me to artist Trici Venola, one of the earliest macintosh b+w painters. it's been a long time since i was excited about finding new (old!) pixel art to learn from, and Trici's work sets such a high bar 🙏
her personal site showcases a little bit of her pixel art. but what stood out to me is her little story, "The Tiger in the Mac". it's near the bottom of the page:

Deep in the woods, away from the path well-traveled, was a little hut that smelled like herbal tea and fresh bread.
Anyone that stumbled upon the hut was greeted by an old cat on its front porch, and was eyed critically should they decide to step closer.
