Your use of the #monochrome hashtag reminded me of my love of looking at photos on my old monochrome macintosh circa 1990, so I took your photo, cropped and scaled it down to the resolution of my old mac (on its side, haha), and applied the #Atkinson dithering algorithm seen in some photos on #HyperCard back in the day.

From July of last year, the blog called decryption posted a bunch of wondrous examples of 1-bit MacPaint art from the early days of the platform. MacPaint had a distinctive aesthetic: tiny dots, each either white or black, favored the use of dithering to create makeshift grayscale. (Note: one image is NSFW.) Here I coded a dithering selection depending on a noise pattern but open for using with every other pattern.
Now I think about improving it and using it for the shading of 3D models. That could look interesting and be combined with toon shaders.

Everyone who’s familiar with late 80s and early 90s video games is familiar with dithering (whether they know the term or not), a gorgeous technique by which a 16 or 256 colour display can emulate richer palettes. Maybe the best examples are Mark Ferrari’s jaw-dropping backgrounds in Loom and the Secret of Monkey Island; go watch his excellent talk:

Just learned a super cool motion blur trick when you have a procedural scene: simply use a jittered time on an arbitrary range (typically the time delta between rendered frame): T+hash(P) instead of T (T is the time, P the fragment position).
There is no buffering, it costs almost nothing (just the pixel hashing), and it works with pretty much every existing procedural code. It's like temporal #dithering, cool stuff.
