  1. @VE7WYC

Your use of the #monochrome hashtag reminded me of my love of looking at photos on my old monochrome macintosh circa 1990, so I took your photo, cropped and scaled it down to the resolution of my old mac (on its side, haha), and applied the #Atkinson dithering algorithm seen in some photos on #HyperCard back in the day.

  2. When watching comics I was always faszinated of the dithering.

Here I coded a dithering selection depending on a noise pattern but open for using with every other pattern.

Now I think about improving it and using it for the shading of 3D models. That could look interesting and be combined with toon shaders.

  3. Everyone who’s familiar with late 80s and early 90s video games is familiar with dithering (whether they know the term or not), a gorgeous technique by which a 16 or 256 colour display can emulate richer palettes. Maybe the best examples are Mark Ferrari’s jaw-dropping backgrounds in Loom and the Secret of Monkey Island; go watch his excellent talk:

Since stitches ≅ pixels and yarn comes in limited palettes as well, the same tools can be employed in yarn arts!

  4. Recently bought an e-paper display that can only display 4 shades of gray, so I had to figure out how to display pictures with only 4 colors... I always liked halftone aesthetics, and now I'm obsessed with the concept of dithering.

    Here's a picture I took of a marmot, dithered to 4 graytones (0, 128, 192, 255) using Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion dithering.

It's one of those techniques that you don't realize are still relevant until you get specific hardware like an e-paper display.

Btw, I posted the original of this image previously: infosec.exchange/@hertg/114965

  6. Played around with blue noise a bit. The attached image has four different variations (using the zx spectrum next color space as target). The source image is from thispersondoesnotexist.

First is a straight conversion with no dither, second is converted to 32 colors with pattern dither in photoshop, third is blended with blue noise texture at 10% and last has 5% uniform noise added before conversion.

It's not exactly apples to apples comparison because these are all done in photoshop and I didn't tweak things to look as good as possible (given that tweaking a value is a undo-undo-undo, tweak, collapse, filter), but the blue noise looks fairly good.
