  1. My #linux distributions history:

1995: #slackware, my first linux experience, in my campus lab as a student of information engineering, also install this on my PC using dozens of floppy disk.

2000: #redhatlinux (not #RHEL), mainly used as my cybercafe router and servers. Also try #knoppix on my PC occasionally

2003: Fedora Core Linux (called as #Fedora Linux now) as a continuation of of #redhat linux. Fedora was also the first time linux was used as my primary OS on my PC and laptop.

  2. It seems like common knowledge to say that the "Linux desktop" has come a long way from its beginnings, and that while it used to feature quite a horrendous and complex user experience that was really "only for nerds", it's now - thanks to decades of volunteer improvements - finally on par with the user experience of commercial software.

Nowadays, even non-"computer people" can set up and use a Linux system, while in the past, you couldn't even get through the installation without a PhD in compsci.

    That's what people keep saying.

But honestly, after having gone through a Windows XP installation right after a Red Hat Linux 8.1 installation, I am not sure about this at all anymore?

Even with both being systems released around the same time, Red Hat was considerably easier to set up and overall more user friendly.

Both feature graphical installers in plain English, accessibility options, language and locale selections from the very beginning.

Windows however confused me with "workgroups" and "domains", which I didn't know what to do with for a personal PC. Scroll bars were unresponsive. It also took way longer to install.

Red Hat didn't have any of these issues, and even allowed me to choose a bunch of thematically ordered software to pre-install, all in a big menu with icons and explanations, which was nice.

Why did people think back then that Windows was more "normal people friendly" than Linux? It's utter nonsense.

  4. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 is now live!

Red Hat has just released the tenth version of the enterprise-grade Linux distribution, called Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. While no announcement has been made yet, this version is now available to download through the customer portal on your Red Hat account with an appropriate subscription.

For those who are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux on modern servers, the performance has been improved so that your servers can process information more quickly than before. In addition to that, a newer Linux kernel release has been employed to add support for more desktops and servers, including those that use very recent hardware.

For those that are running this version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux on desktops, the GNOME desktop has been updated to use Wayland rather than the more antique X11 server. Furthermore, more packages have been updated to their latest versions so that you can experience new features introduced in those versions.

  6. I've just been handed my first major project which is to begin the process of investigating replacement of #oracle with #postgresql for the backup of our Salesforce data. This is turning into frustrating fun. Fun because we are ditching oracle, frustrating because we still have to use #RedHatLinux. The IT headshed has declared #AlmaLinux as a no go. Boo! #Linux

  7. I'm downloading the full 3-CD Set of the #RedHatLinux 5.1 "manhattan" off archive.org to make a VM.

That was my first contact with #Linux back in 1998!

  8. For now I'm keeping the CentOS Stream secure boot certs until I can get my own generated. I went back through the packages and just debranded without removing anything key and cert related. On the Rocky mattermost I was asking for help about generating kpatch and dup certs. A few people pointed me in the right direction namely Sherif Nagy, Nazunalika and Sokel. I appreciate their help a ton!

  9. @thelinuxEXP Just 32 years old? Okay, now that makes me feel like a total nerd, because I’ve been using #Linux for about 25 years… Part-time for the first half (I started when #RedHatLinux was brand new, mostly dabbling and experimenting), and went to Linux full-time around 2012-ish. I’ve temporarily stepped away from Linux of late due to unavoidable logistical reasons, but I hope to move my personal computer back in the medium-term future, as I miss it too much.

  10. Wandering through #Brisbane whilst I’m staying there for work, and I unexpectedly stumbled across this around the corner from my my hotel… I totally wasn’t expecting to see this, but since this was where I started my #Linux journey some ~25 years ago, I couldn’t help but take a photo. | #RHEL #RedHat #RedHatLinux #RedHatEnterpriseLinux #OpenSource #Brisvegas
