  1. Why were people always so scared of the terminal?

    One wrong move and CentOS 6 would hit you with:

    "This incident will be reported."

  2. I hate-post about shitty tech a lot, so I think it's important to also call out the good tech stuff I come across.
    I think it's extremely impressive that on #CentOS, upgrading to a newer version of PHP and other packages distributed as dnf modules requires just one command. For example, "dnf module switch-to php:8.3".

  9. Der Tag ist doof!

    Ich dachte mir, meinen Plan etwas voranzubringen, den fetten Server für Teile der Nacht runterzufahren, um Energie zu sparen. Dazu müsste ich Teile der dortigen Services auf einen anderen 24x7 Server migrieren, der weniger #Strom schluckt.

    Meine prädestinierte #Hardware dafür ist die PCEngines APU 1D4, davon habe ich hier noch einige rumliegen. Die sind sparsam und grundsolide, aber auch alt. Performancetechnisch sollten die aber noch ausreichen.

    Meine naiven Versuche mit #CentOS 10 scheiterten ebenso wie mit Release 9, vermutlich wegen mangelnder Hardwareunterstützung:
    * RHEL 9: Anhebung des x86_64-Baselines auf x86-64-v2
    * RHEL10/CentOS Stream 10: x86-64-v3 vorausgesetzt

    Schade, weil ich mit CentOS viel Erfahrung habe. Aber da kann man wohl nix machen. Ich will aber weder den Plan noch die vorhandene Hardware aufgeben, jedenfalls jetzt noch nicht.

    Also gehe ich mal wacker auf die Suche nach einer anderen #Distribution.

    Kriterien:
    * möglichst langer Software-Support (Security)
    * Support von #Podman

    Die KI sagt, dass vermutlich #Debian 13 am ehesten zu empfehlen ist. Ich bin geneigt, dieser Bewertung zuzustimmen. Debian hatte ich auch schon mehrfach im Einsatz, ein gewisses Grundwissen ist also vorhanden.
    Für Debian 13 wird aktuell ein Support bis 30. Juni 2030 genannt.

  12. Yesterday an automatic #DNF upgrade process prevented my #Podman 6 on #CentOS Stream from starting rootless containers properly.

    Many new features came in with v6 and impacted my #rootless customizations - socket based activation, aardvark per-user DNS processes, etc.

    Those are powerful features that put #Podman ahead of #Docker in many ways.

    AI agents actually did not fully understand the problem, as the v6 just landed (together with #netavark v2 and aardvark-dns v2).

  13. BEGIN RANT

    I used Linux, many distros*, as my primary desktop and everywhere else from 1998 to 2012. I used Unix starting in 1982, with Macintoshes off and on since their introduction.

    In 2012, I moved my primary "desktop" to a MacBook. I liked it a lot, and a Mac is still my primary desktop. Since I retired in 2015, I maintain very few servers.

    So my Linux sysadmin skills have atrophied.

  18. Homelab update: time to move on from downstream clones!

    Shifting all my workloads over to CentOS Stream with Podman. Living closer to upstream, containerizing everything, and probably breaking things in new and interesting ways.

    Or maybe I go absolutely nuts and go all the way up to #Fedora!

  19. Thank you to @centos for sponsoring Flock 2026 at the Silver level!

    CentOS and Fedora have always been deeply connected. CentOS Stream sits at the heart of that relationship, feeding directly into RHEL and drawing from Fedora's innovations. Their contributors and ours overlap in ways that make both projects stronger.

  20. I've been quite supportive to Red Hat many years. I use their free developer license, as that was supposed to be the new way as a CentOS replacement.

    Now I've found a bug I want to report. I don't need or want support, I just want them to beware of the issue. But I'm not capable of understanding where and how to report that. Created an Atlassian account - but to no avail - I was not granted access to anything.

    Seriously, Red Hat ... this is not good enough! Far from it! Now you basically makes me want to move towards @almalinux or @rockylinux. Which I believe is exactly what you wanted to avoid when you shut down #CentOS.

    And I've noticed that more and more KB articles are now restricted, even after logging in with my developer account.

    Your credibility in regards to be supportive to the community is being torn apart now. The free Red Hat Developer subscription feels more and more like a sales/marketing channel nowadays.

    I am capable of doing self-support. I've worked for you earlier, I've debugged RHEL issues for you many years. And I want to contribute back as token of appreciation for what you've done so far. Now you make it more and more difficult to help out. Then I rather switch to an EL community which is more forthcoming.

    #redhat #linux #foss #oss

    PS! I do not need any suggestions to try other distros. I like and prefer the Fedora/RHEL universe. That's what I've been using primarily for closer to 15+ years; I solve issues quickly here. So Alma/Rocky is where I'm going next. Yes, I know a ton of other distributions and do not need to be educated in why other distros are better. They are not necessarily better for me.

    Alles in allem also ein völlig verschwendeter Tag.

  25. History of CentOS: How a biochemist's Linux hobby project became the enterprise world's default operating system

    Was a very happy user of CentOS at work for web servers for many years up to the great 2021 controversy. It was so great to have an OS that was so stable, reliable and secure. A real boon for small organisations, much less faffing about. It Just Worked, no fuss.
