  8. Seht mal her über was ich mal wieder gestolpert bin.

  11. I love using Debian. I think it is so interesting that so many distros have been or currently are based on Debian. While I prefer vanillia Debian, I wanted to list all of the Debian based distros (non-Ubuntu) I know of and categorize them based on what makes them unique.

    Daily Drivers (Ease of use):

LMDE - Linux Mint + Debian, no Ubuntu, Mint polish
MX Linux - MXTools is helpful
Deepin - Beautiful, preconfigured desktop, from China.
Peppermint_OS – Lightweight, cloud integrated, snappy
Neptune - Polished KDE Plasma on stable Debian w/newer kernels.
SpiralLinux – Pure Debian with modern defaults (Btrfs, ZRAM).
SolydXK – Simplified XFCE/KDE desktops for stability.
Lingmo OS / Mauna Linux / Br OS - Recent, beautiful desktops (China/Brazil)

    Modern/Atomic (Immutable):

Vanilla OS - Atomic updates, can run Fedora/Arch apps via Apx.
blendOS - Atomic, lets you choose DE (KDE, XFCE, etc), can install applications from other Linux distros.
Nitrux - Immutable, no systemd (OpenRC), Maui shell, immutable, heavy reliance on AppImage

    High Performance and Gaming:

Siduction - Rolling release based on Debian Sid.
SparkyLinux - Great for gaming, newer drivers.
PikaOS - Gaming with high-performance kernel opimizations.

    Multimedia/Creative:

AV Linux (MX Edition) – Preconfigured w/low-latency kernel for audio production.

    Minimalist:

BashCore - Ultra minimalist, branding free CLI environment.
Slax - Modular, tiny, runs from a USB stick.

    Performance and Old Hardware (Lightweight):

antiX - No systemd, runs on a toaster (256MB RAM)
CrunchBang++ (#!++)- Minimalist, Debian + Openbox, continuation of original Crunchbang.
BunsenLabs - minimalist OpenBox, keyboard centric.
Window Maker Live - 90s NeXTSTEP look, fast, retro.
Puppy Linux (DPup) - Runes entirely on RAM, fast.
Elive - Enlightenment desktop, high-end looks for 20 year old hardware.
Damn Small Linux - Stays under 700MB.
wattOS - Low power consumption and simplicity.
Q4OS – Trinity desktop, can mimic Windows XP/7.
Commodore OS Vision - Retro computing aesthetic.

Qubes OS - Isolates everything inside Xen VMs, has Debian and Fedora as default templates.
Tails - Amnesic "Snowden" OS, leaves no trace on hardware.
    Whonix - Extreme privacy via dual-VM gateway/workstation.
Kodachi - Hardened, pre-routed live OS alternative to Tails.

  16. My #linux distributions history:

1995: #slackware, my first linux experience, in my campus lab as a student of information engineering, also install this on my PC using dozens of floppy disk.

2000: #redhatlinux (not #RHEL), mainly used as my cybercafe router and servers. Also try #knoppix on my PC occasionally

2003: Fedora Core Linux (called as #Fedora Linux now) as a continuation of of #redhat linux. Fedora was also the first time linux was used as my primary OS on my PC and laptop.

  17. @echo_xc
Reminds me: Have you heard of #knoppix? The one-floppy-disk gui linux distro?

  18. As the fate would have it, now I stumbled upon @nickbearded

Nick, interesting project you have there. But again, just like in case of #Knoppix why the hesitation to share to build scripts? Is it simply not convenient?

"No source code, build scripts, or internal configuration files are distributed or made public."

  19. Am I wrong, or was Knoppix 9.1 DVD the *last* LiveCD Linux distro that came with Wine preinstalled?

Such a gem, boot and go, with a ton of apps ready out of the box. Then from v9.2 on, it became exclusive to a German IT magazine... and, apparently, the German language too.

Curiously, even though it’s all *open source*, good luck actually finding it.
What are those Germans hiding, source code or secret sausages? 😅🥨

The latest version that is available for public download is 9.1, which was released to bring improvements and new features, compared to the previous versions. It also includes Chromium for web browsing, as well as all the other software that was bundled in previous Knoppix versions. It uses the LXDE desktop environment, which is suitable for lightweight system usage to make it suitable for old PCs.

If we managed to get our hands on the very first version of KNOPPIX, we’ll make a review article on it as soon as we get it working. We are open for any links that point to KNOPPIX 1.4. The file names were knoppix-1.4-30-9-2000-DE.iso and knoppix-1.4-30-9-2000-ALS.iso.

Tell us your experience of KNOPPIX in the comments section; we can’t wait to hear them from you!

  31. In just two weeks, KNOPPIX 1.4, released on September 30th, 2000, and is currently unavailable, will celebrate its 25th year anniversary!

Da muß man keine Million Notebooks testen.

    Man findet so kleine
