This website lets you experience Wikipedia like it’s Windows XP . “Developer Sami Smith has built a browser-based Windows XP Wikipedia explorer that turns categories into folders and articles into documents. It’s playful, slightly inefficient, and more interesting than another AI search box bolted onto the web.”

  12. Genuine question I keep coming back to: if your favourite old OS had never been discontinued and just kept getting developed normally by their OG devs with proper modern hardware support, security patches and so on, which one would you actually want to daily drive today?

For me it's a tossup between Windows XP and Windows 7. I used both of them a lot when I was younger and honestly they felt basically the same to me at the time, but Windows 7 always seemed a bit easier to navigate.

  23. Yes!

  27. New video day! I've been spending some time with the Sony Vaio VGN-TX3XP. a 20-year-old carbon fiber ultra-portable that still puts some modern "thin and lights" to shame.

I tried modern 32-bit Linux (#antix), but ultimately decided to return it to its Windows XP glory.

  32. Success.

The torrented Dell drivers disc was able to be mounted in Linux, then I copied the contents to a folder on an external drive.

I was able to run the driver installer programs from that folder and it successfully installed the missing drivers (audio, wifi and nvidia graphics)

Posting this from the XP laptop now, using the Supermium web browser.

  33. @rl_dane It handled it OK, actually. Definitely slowed down :D

I was wondering if it would give me 's warning about opening too many programs at once, when I once accidentally did the thing I did on purpose here but on Windows XP.

  39. In 2024, GMail discontinued their Basic HTML layout. Why? I have no idea. They were probably using the same lack of logic that Youtube used in 2017, when they shut down their mobile site, and that Facebook used in 2024, when they shut down their Basic Mobile site. After all, why keep something that's easy, uncluttered, and that actually works, both with and without screen readers? I absolutely hated GMail's Standard site, and switched to Thunderbird 102 (I still prefer that version) because of it, though I hadn't used an e-mail client since 2006. After being forced to use their main site to fix something the other day, I began looking for another e-mail provider with a basic/plain html version. I found it in Yahoo Mail! I had actually signed up for an account with them in 2023 but never really used it. Tonight, I reactivated my account and tried it. It's wonderful! Note: Basic Yahoo Mail is not the same as Old Yahoo. I had to switch to Old and then go to Basic from there. However, you may be able to access it by going here.

PS. I know that some other blind people use regular GMail, but quite honestly, I don't care. I shouldn't have to learn a whole new set of commands just to access my e-mail and have to deal with a million features that I don't need. One of my mottos is don't fix what's not broken. Oh, and to my Windows XP and 7 friends, Basic Yahoo Mail works there, too.
