Honestly the game-changer about the new Xune app for me is the on-the-fly conversion to WMA Lossless. My library of recent purchases and rips are almost all ALAC with a little FLAC and being able to have lossless files on the Zune without maintaining a second set of files -- especially as storage space is becoming more of a problem -- is a tremendous help.

Oooo, the Xune app for Zune actually fixes some functionality that's been broken in the original for ages, like the artist background images.

Tonight I've been messing around with this new open-source cross-platform rebuild of the Zune app, and it's working great on my MacBook! It's got built-in encoding to WMA Lossless (a format literally nobody but Zune freaks care about) and it's tackled my FLAC and ALAC files with no complaints.

I’ve been in a pitched battle with the Zune software over recognizing some recently-ripped compilation CDs as single albums and I seem to have finally gotten the upper hand, so I’m feeling accomplished.

Hey. So. 😅
One of the folks here suggested I put out the Holiday Gift Crowdfund hat to get this Zune holiday sweater (which is $80) as a gift from the community. Since they still have a handful in stock and it is indeed still a thing I could order, and it’s incredible and I will shamelessly wear it in public, but I do not have that in the budget right now, what with the 8 cats and a modest mortgage.
So if anybody wants to throw a few dollars into the hat for that, my PayPal is trixter at gmail dot com, and I will update the post as needed. And I can at least cover shipping on my own.

So my iPod died on me, again, recently. I was looking for another player to replace it, but didn’t want a touchscreen, and a lot of modern things just have really… meh user interfaces for large libraries.
So, you know what. Let’s just have a little fun with it instead, shall we? Hello, Zune 120.

Did you even know that in the file info window in #iTunes you can use Ctrl+V to paste album art from the clipboard or from the filesystem? Did you know that you can have multiple pieces of art for a file?? @gnome #RhythmBox and @kde #Elisa can't even edit album art.
You can pseudo-trim songs in iTunes by setting custom start and end times; it doesn't alter the file, but start/end will be skipped when played, as well as on iPod. Per-file volume and equalizer adjustments? Separate per-file strings just for sorting Title / Artist / Album?
Also #podcast and audiobooks are managed with all the same above features. Did you know that Microsoft added podcasts to #Zune Player, but not Windows Media Player?
Each playlist can have its own columns and ordering. Album art can be inlined and scaled within.
Look at this, Linux developers. Linux has *nothing* to compete with this.

Haha. #Microsoft discontinued the #Zune brand in 2012. Guess somebody didn't get the memo. In a machine with a Windows installation from just a few years ago, in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps there are several folders with "Zune" in their name. No idea what these are, and probably nothing is wrong here, except that it looks silly that the name of a long discontinued product still shows up.
(You can't inspect the WindowsApps folder in Explorer. Using File > Open in Notepad shows it fine. Odd.)

So now I'm torn between using my old Zune HD or the iPod Nano 2nd Gen I picked up last year as my EDC retro player. The Zune is the superior device in every way except actually getting music onto it now that I've completely migrated away from Windows. Is it worth maintaining a Windows 7 VM and manually converting anything I want to transfer from ALAC to MP3? ...Maybe it is?

Despite learning a lot about computers when I was a kid from the Apple Performa my family had, I've never been an Apple guy, despite owning an iMac once myself. I also really didn't like iTunes, so I never had an iPod.
Back around 2005ish when people were mostly getting iPods and before I got my beloved brown Zune (that someone later stole) I had a wild and wacky (and physically HUGE in comparison) DMC XClef mp3 player that looked like this. It had a LOT of storage space for the time, for the price, and had no software like Apple or Microsoft packaged in with their mp3 players. You didn't need it! You would just plug it up to your computer and transfer the damn files, as it *should* be. A method I use to this very day with my phones.
And I just looked it up to compare, 5th generation iPods around 2005 had about 30 or 60GB drives, these XClefs had 80 to 100GB. I had a friend joke saying I'd never fill it up - and I had to tell him I already pretty much had. 😂

At least, if you're like me and consider 15-year-old laptops that give me nostalgia “retro”! This Dell Inspiron 1420 has been with me through a lot. In 2008, I convinced my parents to support my budding interest in computer programming by getting me a laptop for my birthday. It wasn't the highest-spec'd laptop ever — 4 GB RAM and an almost-irrelevant #PentiumD . But it was mine! And it had this shiny new OS called #WindowsVista and an integrated nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card!
And boy did I use the ever-loving crap out of it. I forced it to play Crysis (24 FPS at 800×600, baby!). I wrote dozens of terrible applications on it in C# in Visual Studio 2008.
One time, I decided to force myself to learn the #Dvorak keyboard layout. Except Dell, in their infinite wisdom, designed the keyboard specifically so that the keys could not be fully re-arranged; you see, the indexing keys — F and J, where your pointer fingers rest in the home position — have their butterfly hinges upside down compared to the rest of the keyboard. As the hinges are not centered on the back of the keycaps, those two keys don't fit in any other position without overlapping adjacent keys.
Well! I had a solution for that! A few minutes with some heavy-duty scissors and F, J, and the new Dvorak home-row keys U and H, were no longer “asymmetrical”!
I abandoned Dvorak after a few weeks - but the keyboard still bears the scars of that endeavor. I've long since lost the F keycap - the butterfly hinge, weakened by being replaced so many times to switch keyboard layouts, no longer held the cap securely and eventually was lost to the sands of time.
This laptop is sitting next to me now, getting a fresh installation of the OS it shipped with — Windows Vista Home Premium. Then I'm going to install some period-correct software — Visual Studio 2008, #Zune, maybe even the #LegoMindstorms programming environment — to create a time capsule of this precious-to-me artifact that sparked the beginning of what would ultimately become my career.

The Zune is a killer mp3 player despite the crap it got. I LOVED my Zune.
I got a bit sad just now - on this early 2000s Dell I re-set up the other day, there's some old Zune art files on it. Some jerk broke my car window and took my Zune from my car when I lived in Florida probably ~2006. I had a beautiful brown one like the one below, and I'd still have it today if that dick hadn't taken it.
I WILL buy another one someday. 🔥
