  1. Pupæ
    A #poetry thread

    i.

    They hang like commas, green and curled
    from word-hung branches, a sentence grows;
    they're folded into minds still furled
    to punctuate new worlds that flow.

    Each pupa’s case still holds its breath,
    in blanket sewn with silk and time.
    The caterpillar cheats its death
    to form a brighter, stranger rhyme.

  2. Hey #BugSky who have we got here? About 5cm. Segmented and moved when I picked it up. We’re thinking hawk moth but the local two are Manduca quinta and M. sexta and it’s neither of those. Tidewater Virginia. #chrysalis #moth #pupae

  3. The #antbagbeetle #Clytra laeviuscula (#Chrysomelidae, #Coleoptera) is a #phytophagous #beetle #species widespread in Europe with a #myrmicophilic relationship of the #larvae and #pupae to #antnests of the genera #Formica, #Lasius and Camponotus. The larva lives mainly from the food of the ant larvae. It is protected from ant attacks by own dropping pieces (#skatoconches). Pupation also takes place in this protected manner. #evolution #biodiversity

  8. 👀😯🐛 "Australian scientists have genetically engineered black soldier flies to eat organic waste and produce ingredients for making everything from lubricants to biofuels to animal feeds. The fly larvae can eat double their body weight a day, consuming waste faster than microbes. They are harvested once they turn into #pupae.
    The scientists hope to have their first genetically engineered #flies for use in waste facilities by the end of the year." theguardian.com/australia-news

  9. Last year a Green-Veined White, Pieris napi, pupa appeared next to the lock on my main door, so all winter I had to be very careful when I was fitting my key into the lock, especially at night. This spring the butterfly didn't emerge despite, as the image shows, the pupa having wing and antennae bumps. So I feel simultaneously blessed by its presence and sad it died before taking flight. I think it was attracted to my garden by Ladies Smock aka Blodyn y Gog the "county flower" of Brycheiniog. Also named L: Cardamine pratensis, E: Cuckooflower, C: Ffedog y Forwyn, C South: Blodyn Llaeth and C North: Blodyn Llefrith, and because "cuckoo stockings" is as adorable as foxgloves C: Hosanau'r Gog.

  10. Ant pupae secrete fluid as "milk" to nurture young larvae rockefeller.edu/news/33214-ant

    The pupal moulting fluid has evolved social functions in #ants nature.com/articles/s41586-022

    The health of the entire colony appears to hinge on the prompt consumption of this nutrient-packed fluid—the #larvae need it to grow and, if adults and larvae fail to drink it, the #pupae die of #FungalInfections as the fluid builds up around them. This creates a dependency between different developmental stages.
