  1. What kind of creature do we have here 🤔?
Formica rufa? In my own back yard?! I'd love them to live right here 🥰

  2. I’ve been waiting for the carpenter ants who live in this elm tree to wake up. (they must still be having their coffee) It’s still cold. But I know the carpenters have a huge nest in this tree.

Then I spot this black ant skulking around their nest entrance. Not Camponotus! This Formica (field ant) is up to no good! #Mosstodon #lichen #lichensubscribe #ants #antphoto #formica

  3. “silky” field ants of the Formica genus have rather large eyes and they can move very quickly. Every time I pick one up she would run to the edge of my hand and launch herself into oblivion to escape. She can see that I am a large creature in a way other ants might not be aware of.

  15. The #slave #ant #Formica #fusca (#Formicinae) is seen here on common #tansy collecting #honeydew from and guarding the #aphid #Metopeurum #fuscoviride. The #workers of this ant #species, which builds #polygynous subterranean nests, are often exploited by other species for nest building. As C. Carere et al. (2018) found, there is a linear link between #individual and #collective #behavior.

  20. The #Norwaymaple #Acer #platanoides is a native #tree of (Central) #Europe that spread northward after the last #IceAge along with mixed oak forests and is still commonly found in such #treecommunities today. Like all #trees, it offers #habitats for numerous organisms, forming complex macro#ecosystems, e.g., the #leaves, where #aphids feed, while the #ant #Formica #fusca is collecting their excretions (honeydew) as food.

  25. The #duskyant, #Formica #fusca (#Myrmicinae), is a ground-dwelling #ant with #earthnests in warmer habitats, widespread in #CentralEurope and extending across the western #Palearctic. Like many ant species, this one also carries #phoretic organisms on its body, e.g., #mites of the #Histiostomatidae. #biodiversity #insects #Hymenoptera

  35. Ants are not ideal pollinators, as they don't move as efficiently among plants as do flying insects. But they are capabable of picking up and moving at least some pollen, as demonstrated by this Formica incerta field ant on Queen Anne's Lace. Townsend, Tennessee.
