For my 1st sighting of Green-veined Whites this year I took a walk from the garden down the lane - behold! I spot a mating pair on the ground.
Female Green-veined Whites mate with several males to increase the number of her eggs. Male Green-veined Whites transfer sperm but also nutrients the female can use to increase egg production & may transfer 15-25% of their body mass to females during mating.

The heat seems to have forced many butterflies to take cover but the whites have been out & about.. This shot is of a green-veined white butterfly taking shelter in the hedgerow fern

Last year a Green-Veined White, Pieris napi, pupa appeared next to the lock on my main door, so all winter I had to be very careful when I was fitting my key into the lock, especially at night. This spring the butterfly didn't emerge despite, as the image shows, the pupa having wing and antennae bumps. So I feel simultaneously blessed by its presence and sad it died before taking flight. I think it was attracted to my garden by Ladies Smock aka Blodyn y Gog the "county flower" of Brycheiniog. Also named L: Cardamine pratensis, E: Cuckooflower, C: Ffedog y Forwyn, C South: Blodyn Llaeth and C North: Blodyn Llefrith, and because "cuckoo stockings" is as adorable as foxgloves C: Hosanau'r Gog.

Have just been blessed by a small beetle visiting my desk. Now returned safely outside. Don't know which species. Too small for a photo. Have a Green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi) in my garden instead.
