  1. Wild… More than 15 years ago I wrote some #Java code for consuming #Oembed resources and it turns out, it is still used. #happy

  2. RE: mastodon.social/@Mastodon/1156

    ❝ That's why we carefully designed consent-respecting Quote Posts.❞

that’s not how free speech works. as i have pointed, since when do you have to ask permission to add a citation in your writing?

the #uiux of Quote Posts need work. blank spaces waiting for approval are awful.

you also break the web by removing the link to the original post. it may be in the metadata but by removing it from the body, you break the web.

all we want is for you to repect the #oEmbed API with your own links.

    Díky

  4. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?!?!?

    this isn’t good UI/UX @MastodonEngineering

more importantly, it fundamentally breaks one of the basics of #rhetorics and #writing : the ability to quote someone freely.

people either have public, embedabble posts or they don’t.

stop breaking the web. stop breaking #oembed.

  5. Link preview oembed is good with wide images. I feel both narrow and wide should show wide after crop.

  6. From the archive! Drupal 9: Content Sharing Between Drupal Sites Using oEmbed

In this article we cover what oEmbed is and how to set up a custom oEmbed endpoint. We then set up and configure a Drupal site to consume that custom oEmbed endpoint.

A technique that still works in the same way in Drupal 11!

  7. Any suggestions for a Vimeo alternative for uploading screen recordings for sharing (e.g. supports oembed) with some visibility controls e.g. "only people with the link"?

  8. Everytime a SaaS makes you embed a code snippet Wapuu cries

I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve seen paying customers be offered no other choice but a javascript snippet to embed on their site, like it’s 1999 and we’re still crafting HTML files by hand.

The OEmbed specification has been around since 2008, and is a wonderfully simple idea:

A user should only ever care about their content’s URL, how to embed the content into your content management system or platform should be abstracted away from the user.

You’ve seen this before, pasting a YouTube link, automagically embeds a YouTube player onto the page.

The mechanism to this is simple, basically your YouTube page contains a tag that helps discover how to represent the content, embedding an iFrame, etc.

    <link rel="alternate" type="application/json+oembed" .../>

Obviously not everyone is using wordpress, only like 40% of the web, but seriously, even in react-land there are libraries for this.

Maybe the reason is something like the cake mix story, where customers were unsatisfied feeling the recipe was too easy, so the cake mix recipe was altered to require manually adding an egg. This proved to be enough to make customers feel they’d actually participated in making the cake.

What do you think? Does adding a snippet improve your authoring experience? Or would you prefer to just paste a link and get on with it?

  9. V5.8.0 – If it’s on the Fediverse, you can embed it.

This update introduces two exciting improvements: brand-new email templates and personalized notification settings. Emails now deliver much richer content—mentions and direct messages include the full post, and the refreshed design feels modern and refined. Additionally, new follower notifications feature a profile card, making it easier to see who's interacting with your content. We've made several improvements around Embeds and Importing: Fediverse content embedding now has fallback […]

  10. Are there any free/fedi/open #music streaming services that #WordPress (org) can be persuaded (maybe with a little code) to support #oEmbed for?

  11. "We may use personal information to provide you with marketing."

Has anyone done a analysis of bsky embedding posts in a website - the html includes a script tag.

I would really rather NOT allow their until marketing consent has been obtained. I can and will do this, but if anyone has info backing up why this is the legally proper thing to do that would be very useful. I am concerned that I may get push back from clients preferring presentation over privacy!

  12. New post...

A simple Hugo shortcode for embedding Bluesky posts • While it doesn’t do static embeds, this shortcode gives you an easy way to show content from an increasingly popular social network.

  13. AM STILL MAD ABOUT THIS!

i spent the whole day, WHOLE FUCKING DAY, debugging in #Backdrop with #ckeditor the #Mastodon embeddable code.

    WHOLE
    FUCKING
    DAY

and even after i got it to work, i have to submit a ticket because it looks like Mastodon is NOT following standard #oembed protocols; hence the difficulties.

this should not have taken me a whole fucking day to sort out but every single FLOSS project is pulling bullshit moves and breaking the web (AM LOOKING AT YOU #CKEDITOR)

  15. TLDR: the iframes in your WordPress posts now gracefully revert to links… instead of being sanitized out.

WordPress, even before Gutenberg, in its classic tinymce based editor, had started auto-transforming plain URLs, where possible into rich content via oEmbed.

This coincided with expectations that video, audio, and other forms of rich content, were largely being created on separate platforms.

Those platforms were specializing in specific content types and creators who flocked to them benefited from the platform’s network effects.

Today the ActivityPub protocol holds the promise of a post-platform future, with Federation and Interoperability providing the Network effects.

With ActivityPub remote servers are expected to sanitize content.
In the case of oEmbed this means the iframe elements in our content will be dropped completely from remote servers.

As of the version 2.4.0, the ActivityPub plugin, thanks to yours truly, gracefully reverts Embed blocks to links instead of letting the iframe tags be sanitized out by remote servers.

  17. #oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites.

    oembed.com

  18. Nerdy #ActivityPub and #oEmbed question.

Why can't I send an "Accept: application/json+oembed" request to a URl to receive the oEmbed version?

Instead, I have to request the full page, look for the <link>, parse that, then request the oEmbed.

Seems inefficient - but am I missing something?

  19. Hey #WebDev, how common is oembed "in the wild"?

I stumbled across today and I've honestly never heard of it before. Is building support for it common?

Do you expect that your public Posts can be embedded anywhere on the web?

  21. as someone getting closer to a decision as to which kind of #fediverse platform i would like to run, nobody has explained why is it that mastodon-social will not embed properly toots coming from other #mastodon instances

can someone please explain to me why is this a thing with mastodon when #oembed is a standard that's been around for almost 20 years now?

  22. So if I'm reading the oEmbed spec correctly, it should be possible to pre-render #oEmbed metadata for a #staticSite as long as I...

    1. Pre-render both XML and JSON formats
    2. Pre-render the discovery links in the page head
    3. Have the server map endpoint+parameter URLs to the files
    4. Only provide "link" type responses

Photo, video, and rich responses are all required to specify a width and height, and those are required to fit within the requested maxheight and maxwidth, so those responses would have to be dynamic.

It's not clear whether [3] is necessary if I have [2].

Link responses aren't that much more useful than including the title element in the original file.

Photo responses would be good for, well, photos, and rich responses would let me design the embedded preview for an article. Which would be nice.

But most of this is pretty much covered by #OpenGraph and similar #metadata schemes that are just in the file -- no messing around with API endpoints or mapping and the rest. So I'm not sure it would be worth the effort except maaaaybe being able to get WordPress sites to embed a preview when someone pastes a plain URL. (Assuming it will look for the discovery link in the first place, that is.)

  25. Should photo #oembeds in #Mastodon from e.g. #Flickr and other photo/image sites follow the rules github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p of link previews, or preserve the aspect ratio of the original image?

It feels a bit contra productive and wasteful if users end up uploading the photo in addition to Mastodon caching the original image.

  27. Does anyone know if posts from Pleroma/Akkoma can be embedded?

This closed issue from three years ago suggests this should be possible, but I can't seem to get this to work. Unless this is not typically enabled on instances?
