Of course, I'm not saying that self-managed hosting is bad. I'm just saying that there is an ongoing cost that sits on the publisher.
One consequence is that legacy projects will be in danger of disappearing as sites go down (whether on purpose, or because something breaks and the owner has no energy or money to deal with it).
So, I think if we're going to advocate for a more self-hosted web, we also have to advocate for public archives to migrate legacy data to (and possibly just old data, even from live projects).
Is that the role of #InternetArchive or #WikimediaCommons ? IDK.
There are the commercial platforms like #YouTube and #Vimeo -- but they have their own forms of erosion to worry about.
But I think it ought to exist.
I have about 25 GB of Blender source files for Lunatics, and about 60 GB of incidental videos from the project. Presumably, I could pare that down to make digests or something (and I probably will when I make a source release on BD-R). So possibly it should be winnowed down to make it more manageable. But in the long term, a migration to public archives seems like the only way to preserve this sort of thing.
Or else it just vanishes offline, I guess.

Sometimes things happen when they're supposed to, and I'd been putting off the migration to @peertube for ages until finally implementing it last month.
Today I went to log into @Vimeo to make sure I'm not on any kind of subscription/payment plan with them and was greeted by this screen.
I haven't clicked the button, but wondered how I can otherwise find, and cancel, any future payments that may be automatically billed by Vimeo?

Jaha. Ett nyhetsbrev från en seriös konstnär innehöll en länk till en video som konstnären gjort, på Vimeo. Den sa något om vuxeninnehåll (oklart vem som definerat det som det) och krävde att jag loggade in. Jag har ett konto, så jag loggade in. Men det räckte inte. Jag måste åldersverifiera mig. Skulle skickas till någon annan firma för verifiera med biometri tror jag. Där loggade jag ut. Jag får berätta för konstnären om hen är medveten om detta.

I get a blocking prompt when I start the app. I cannot even see the videos that I *bought* a few years ago!
The verification process requires that I send them a selfie... Ahhh... No.

We know: the devil's in the details. For now, assume we could work out a time that's convenient for you, & the films were on an accessible platform (all of which we're looking into).
We know that parents and educators like to screen films before you watch them with kids, & we also know there are some serious film fans on the Fediverse.

After a day of implementing my migration from Vimeo to @peertube, I can say that I'm very happy with the PeerTube user experience. It's a lot more intuitive than what Vimeo has become, and much easier to find and fine tune things along the way.
I'm excited to continue this work, alongside the addition of some new video content to @sam / https://video.bl.ag.
