Short link: https://dansu.org/fedihost-maintenanceIf #Fedihost doesn’t provide maintenance tools of this type, one option is to use the #Mastodon API to purge files. Or for any other maintenance that you’d like to do.
You should be able to run API scripts for these purposes on any Linux laptop or desktop.
You’d need to generate a Mastodon User Access Token. If you see Preferences -> Development -> New Application in your Mastodon admin interface, you should be able to take care of this step there.
If purge of old files by date will work, FloatingGhost [the #Akkoma lead] has an appropriate script at:

To purge files more selectively based on, for example, file date, type, and size, you’d write a script in bash, Perl, or Python, or you’d look for one at Github or other git sites. If you get to the point of trying this, ping me here and we’ll discuss it further. I’m a Full Service Old Coder.
Follow through with a Support ticket at Fedihost, regardless. If a retention period has been set, ask them why storage used is continuing to rise.
Another option, and one that’s recommended for power users, is to #selfhost your own Fediverse instance. It wouldn’t be Mastodon as that is fairly heavy. There are lighter Fediverse servers that might work on a $10 to $25 per month VPS and that might be relatively simple to set up.
Repeat, “might” for both parts. No guarantees, but if it doesn’t work out, no harm done.
It’s important to select a good VPS host. Most aren’t very good. But for that price range you can get decent CPU and RAM and 100GB to 150GB of regular SSD. Note: Don’t go for NVMe unless it’s priced attractively. Regular SSD is more cost effective.
I see the little piggy, so I gather that you’re at Porkbun. If so, the cost of a domain is already addressed. You’d simply create a new subdomain such as the following for the new Fediverse instance:

@steve mookie kong ...which, unfortunately, would limit the features of the backend to what Mastodon itself can do. Because nothing else is implemented in the frontend.
No enclosed threaded conversations. Very limited HTML rendering. No formatting the text of your own messages. No emoji reactions. No images embedded in messages. No more than four images dangling below a message as file attachments.
If anything, someone who is not a Mastodon dev and not even daily-driving Mastodon should soft-fork Mastodon's Web UI and modify it so that it can adjust to the backend and offer all the features of the backend.
If you use it with snac2, you have the full set of snac2's features available.
If you use it with Akkoma, you have the full set of Akkoma's features available.
If you somehow manage to use it with Friendica, you have the full set of Friendica's features available.
Maybe there could be some options in the configuration that can (but don't by default) limit certain features to Mastodon's standard for those who really need the Mastodon UX with a non-Mastodon backend.

It was. At least until Evan and Erin could no longer justify it running on that janky OStatus protocol. The result was the ActivityPump protocol, the pump.io software and Identi.ca's switch to pump.io with all hands on board.Yes, and it should not be implemented in Ruby or PHP or something like that. I have seen one online discussion forum being rewritten from PHP to Rust few years ago, and the improvement in responsiveness of the web platform was amazing. (I do C, not Rust, but C is too oldschool now, and the performance penalty of Rust is minor, probably not noticeable at all)
This reminds me of how the Fediverse is all over the place in terms of programming languages. Everyone has their own Holy Grail.
Friendica and its descendants are written in PHP. They may not be the fastest (even though what bogged down early Friendica were its heavyweight federation connectors to everywhere, especially the one for Facebook that came in 2011). Mike either discarded or rewrote these when he rewrote Red. But they happily run on a run-of-the-mill LAMP stack.
Mastodon is written in Ruby on Rails. Hubzilla runs circles around it in terms of performance per account/channel, and that has to say something. The only thing that managed to top this was early diaspora*, written in Ruby on Rails for Mac with MongoDB as the database system.
The *omas are built in Elixir. Granted, they're utter featherweights, especially considering their features. They're legendary for their low server impact. Then again, Pleroma apparently is spaghetti code straight from hell. Its own devs often don't have a clue where to go look for bugs, much less how to fix them. (Miraculously, the Akkoma devs do manage to get ride of quite a number of them.)
The *keys are built in TypeScript and Vue.js. I guess one reason why Misskey is infamous for having so many forks and forks of forks is because there are tons of people who can code in JavaScript, the primary mobile programming language.
Iceshrimp.NET is a still very incomplete "rewrite" of old Iceshrimp in C#. It was largely tackled to get rid of all those nasty bugs inherited from Misskey that even Misskey doesn't manage to get rid of. I've heard quite some outcry: Iceshrimp.NET is a sell-out to Microsoft. I guess whoever uttered that didn't go check who owns TypeScript.
PieFed is a dead giveaway: Python. And PieFed makes more headlines in the Threadiverse for server politics than for its underlying technology, except that Lemmy pales in comparison.
GoToSocial is a dead giveaway, too: Go. And it was one of the first Fediverse server applications to not come with a Web UI. Those who use it for a single-user server often don't even bother installing one and use some Mastodon app or other instead. Besides, why drag around a Web UI if there are much better third-party Web UIs than whatever you could whip up?

CW: Why Sharkey fails to render hashtags from Friendica, Hubzilla & Co. properly, and how long this bug has been known already; CW: long (over 6,600 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta
So there's that nasty bug on Sharkey that mangles hashtags in messages from Hubzilla and probably also Friendica, (streams) and Forte. They always look like this:

Basically, Sharkey receives fully standard Rich Text from Hubzilla. It manages to convert this Rich Text into its own Misskey-Flavored Markdown. But then its Markdown parser does not parse it and leaves the Markdown code visible to everyone. It simply doesn't expect there to be a hashtag character in front of an embedded link because, seriously, who'd ever do that and why?!
Friendica would. In fact, Friendica does. It puts the hashtag character in front of the tag, as in outside the tag, as opposed to at the beginning of the tag. It has been doing that since its beginnings in 2010 because it was designed from the get-go to also federate with StatusNet from 2008. And StatusNet does hashtags the same way on its few remaining servers. In fact, so did Identi.ca from 2008, from which StatusNet emerged.
Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte do it, too, because they have inherited it from Friendica.
On StatusNet, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte, a hashtag in a message looks like this:

Notice how the hashtag character has the same colour as the rest of the post text. And not the same colour as the rest of the hashtag. This means that the hashtag character is not part of the link. (To Mastodon users who don't know this: If something in a "toot" has a different colour from the rest of the "toot", it's a link. Even if it doesn't show a URL in plain sight.)
On 𝕏, Mastodon, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, the various Forkeys and a whole lot of other Fediverse software, a hashtag in a message looks like this:

Notice how now the hashtag character has the same colour as the rest of the hashtag. This means that the hashtag character is part of the link.
But why did Identi.ca do hashtags differently from Twitter? Because Identi.ca did hashtags before Twitter. AFAIK, when Identi.ca was launched, it had support for hashtags right away. About one year before Twitter.
The hashtag itself had already been invented by the Twitter community. Chris Messina had already codified it in 2007. But it wasn't until 2009 that Twitter actually introduced a technological implementation to support it.
Again, Identi.ca must have had hashtags as early as 2008, and there was no way that Identi.ca creator Evan Prodromou could possibly predict what Twitter would do the following year. So he did what he thought was right and what actually made sense to him.
But nowadays, everybody "knows" that Twitter had the world's very first hashtag implementation ever because nobody, even in the Fediverse, has ever heard of Identi.ca. I mean, the majority of Fediverse users "know" that the Fediverse started with Mastodon.
You know, just like Officer James Barrett "knew" that there is no intelligent life outside Earth only a few minutes before he became Agent J of the Men In Black.
This is also why just about all Fediverse software that does hashtags the Twitter way expects everything to do hashtags the Twitter way. It does not expect hashtags to be done differently. And when a message comes in from Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) or Forte with hashtags in it, it fails at varying degrees of ungracefully.
Hashtags with the hashtag character outside the link are older than hashtags with the hashtag character inside that they're not only completely unexpected, that they cause software to malfunction, but the same software often can't even handle that malfunction. It's a miracle that the Friendica/Hubzilla family doesn't cause Fediverse servers to crash or even server databases to go corrupt by simply sending hashtags.
Mastodon used to be an exception of sorts, but only because, before version 4.0 from October, 2022, its HTML "sanitiser" actually ripped out any and all rich text code from incoming messages and left nothing but plain text behind. And then it didn't recognise hashtags in messages from outside Mastodon as hashtags at all.
When Mastodon 4.0 came and supported some rich text, including embedded links, it went haywire, of course. But then someone from Friendica and Hubzilla went in and complained about this malfunction and explained what happened, why it happened and why it was not Friendica and Hubzilla that did things wrong. Besides, if something utterly defaces "toots", then Mastodon developers do step in to stop it. After all, Mastodon has a few more of them at hand, paid, full-time professionals even. You have to give it that.
Which takes us back to Sharkey. Sharkey is developed by a small handful of individuals in their spare time. Granted, it's a soft fork of Misskey, so a lot of development work is done by the Misskey devs and taken over by the Sharkey devs, but they still have to weave the code changes coming from Misskey in and make them work with what's different on Sharkey.
So it turned out that (Link content warning: eye contact) this bug has already been filed to the Sharkey devs in October, 2024. All that has happened since then until today was that Hazelnoot added two labels. But the bug report came with no explanations. In fact, it misattributed one of my Hubzilla posts as a Friendica post.
And in fact, it turned out that this is actually (Link content warning: Microsoft GitHub link, eye contact) a Misskey bug which has been filed in January, 2024, two years ago. The bug report is a bit more elaborate, but the reporter still knew precious little about what's going on. So I wrote a comment in which I explained the bug from a Friendica/Hubzilla POV as well as what's going on on the technical side, and why the error has to be on Misskey's side.
I hope this will finally help get the bug fixed. Unfortunately, this fix would come too late for Iceshrimp. Iceshrimp-JS is a true Forkey, but in maintenance mode, so I guess only security patches and critical bugfixes will be merged from Misskey, if anything. And Iceshrimp.NET is a complete rewrite of a pre-this-fix Misskey fork, so the Iceshrimp devs probably don't know about this issue either. If it fails ungracefully upon receiving hashtags with the hashtag character outside, it will require its own bug report.

@Robert Frank Wenn man selbst nur Mastodon nutzt, fühlt es sich piepschnurzegal an. Dann nimmt man eh das ganze Fediverse als nur Mastodon wahr und die Unterschiede zwischen Mastodon und Nicht-Mastodon fast überhaupt nicht.
Wenn man selbst aber etwas ganz anderes im Fediverse nutzt als Mastodon, dann ist es immens wichtig.
Ich selbst bin nicht auf Mastodon. Ich bin auf Hubzilla (https://hubzilla.org, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubzilla, https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/item/0a75de76-eb27-4149-b708-f20b2f79d392). Das funktioniert völlig anders als Mastodon, das hat ein völlig anderes Konzept als Mastodon, das wird von Mastodon völlig unabhängig entwickelt. Es hat Features, die auf Mastodon unvorstellbar sind. Noch dazu ist es zehn Monate älter als Mastodon. Es geht sogar zurück auf Friendica, das mehr als fünfeinhalb Jahre älter ist als Mastodon.
Aber wie du mit eigenen Augen sehen kannst, kann ich Mastodon-Tröts nicht nur empfangen, sondern auch von Hubzilla aus kommentieren.
Wenn jemand das komplette Fediverse meint, es aber "Mastodon" nennt, dann meint er mich zwar damit, spricht mich aber nicht an. Ich bin ja nicht auf Mastodon.
Wenn jemand einen meiner Posts oder Kommentare als "Tröt" bezeichnet in der Annahme, ich sei auch auf Mastodon, dann ist beides sachlich falsch.
Wenn jemand sich wünscht, "das Fediverse" möge endlich ein bestimmtes Feature einführen, nur weil Mastodon es nicht hat, dann kann ich mir nur vor den Kopf schlagen. In den allermeisten Fällen hat Hubzilla genau dieses Feature schon zehn Monate länger, als es Mastodon überhaupt gibt. Sehr häufig hat Friendica dieses Feature schon etliche Jahre länger, als es Mastodon überhaupt gibt. Das Fediverse hat dieses Feature also. Mastodon hat es nicht, aber das Fediverse hat es.
Wenn jemand dagegen ist, daß "das Fediverse" ein bestimmtes Feature einführt, dem sei gesagt: Höchstwahrscheinlich hat das Fediverse dieses Feature schon. Mastodon nicht, aber das Fediverse. Denn höchstwahrscheinlich hatten Friendica und Hubzilla es schon immer, also auch wieder länger, als es Mastodon überhaupt gibt.
Am besten war noch der Widerstand gegen Quote-Posts. "Das Fediverse" sollte die auf gar keinen Fall einführen, sagten einige. Der Witz: Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Calckey, Firefish, CherryPick, Sharkey, Iceshrimp, Catodon, GoToSocial, Mitra, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams), Forte usw., sie alle haben Quote-Posts. Und zwar schon länger, als es diese Debatte auf Mastodon überhaupt gibt. Und sie alle (außer GoToSocial) können widerstandslos jeden, aber auch wirklich jeden Mastodon-Tröt quote-posten.
Oder damals der Widerstand gegen Volltextsuche. Auf gar keinen Fall sollte "das Fediverse" Volltextsuche haben. Nur hatte das Fediverse schon längst Volltextsuche: Friendica war schon im Mai 2010 mit eingebauter Volltextsuche an den Start gegangen.
Ach ja: Zeichenlimits. Wer "Mastodon" und "Fediverse" gleichsetzt, für den hat auch das Fediverse ein festgelegtes Limit von 500 Zeichen. Friendica und Hubzilla hatten aber nie wirklich Zeichenlimits. In deren Kultur kommen auch keine Zeichenlimits vor. Aktuell haben sie übrigens ein "Limit" von über 16,7 Millionen Zeichen. Bis auf Threads hat alles im Fediverse ein sehr viel höheres Zeichenlimit als Mastodon. Entsprechend kriegen Nicht-Mastodon-Nutzer ständig auf den Deckel, wenn sie das angeblich von Gargron für das ganze Fediverse festgeschriebene Limit von 500 Zeichen überschreiten.
Also: Das Fediverse ist nicht nur Mastodon. Das Fediverse war auch nie nur Mastodon. Das Fediverse ist nicht nur ein Twitter-Klon. Das Fediverse hat sehr viel mehr Features als Mastodon. Und das Fediverse hat auch nicht überall dieselbe Kultur und wird sie auch nie haben.

Erstaunlich und erschreckend: Selbst bei grundsätzlich vorhandenem #Internetzugang wird nicht nur das allermeiste, sondern auch die von mir bisher als #Alternative wahrgenommene #Software unbrauchbar.
Habe nämlich derzeit nur eine sehr geringe #Bandbreite zur Verfügung. Per #IMAP in #Thunderbird komme ich wenigstens an einige aktuelle einfache E-Mails, nicht aber per #Webmail im #Browser. Selbst ein reiner Textbrowser wie Lynx scheitert an den übergroßen(?) und unnötig aufwendigen #Webanwendungen und -seiten.
Ich habe eigentlich einiges was ich gerne teilen würde und Antworten die ich euch gerne schicken würde, aber auch hier im #Fediverse das (so dachte ich) ressourcensparende #Akkoma und das Laden von Kommentaren zu #YouTube-Videos über das #Invidious #Frontend gibt es Probleme.
Immer schneller, höher und weiter - manchmal für den Moment aufblitzende Einsichten, aber eigentlich selten zurückschauen und vor allem nie anhalten. Stattdessen weiterstrampeln.
Kaum ist die eine #Technologie eine Weile im Umlauf wird sie bereits von der ihr folgenden bedroht. Hier ist eben kein #5G, nicht einmal #4G oder #3G - holen wir doch erstmal alle in der Welt auf dasselbe #Niveau statt immer wieder eine #Zeitüberschreitung zu provozieren bzw. zu begehen. -

Okay, everyone, sit down. I'll tell you a few things about Mastodon's quote-post feature that you know nothing about. Definitely not if all you know is Mastodon. Oh, and by the way, in case you don't know yet in spite of following me: The Fediverse is not only Mastodon.Mastodon has been quote-post-able for as long as it has been around
Eugen Rochko is bringing quote-posts to Mastodon. But he is not bringing quote-posts to the Fediverse. The Fediverse has had quote-posts for 15 years.
It was Mike Macgirvin who introduced quote-posts to the Fediverse in July, 2010, when he launched something called Mistpark back then and Friendica today (https://friendi.ca, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friendica). That was five and a half years before Mastodon was launched.
In fact, when Mastodon was launched, it immediately federated itself with Friendica and with Hubzilla, a fork of a fork of Friendica by Friendica's own creator which has quote-posts, too. So when Mastodon was launched, it immediately became possible to quote-post Mastodon toots. Not on Mastodon itself, but on Friendica and Hubzilla.Just about everything that isn't Mastodon has already got quote-posts right now

And they're all part of the Fediverse which means that they're all connected to Mastodon. People on all of these can theoretically read your Mastodon toots. So you can choose not to be quote-posted. But you can only choose not to be quote-posted by Mastodon users. This opt-in does not work with the rest of the Fediverse.
First of all, that's because Mastodon's quote-post feature is not compatible with anything else out there. Mastodon's developers have chosen to re-invent the quote-posting wheel from scratch. They've intentionally chosen to do so in a way that's completely incompatible with everything else out there.
Their intention was to reinforce Mastodon's appearance to its own users as the one and only Fediverse and ActivityPub gold standard and to make Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Firefish, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, CherryPick, Catodon, Mitra, Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams), Forte etc. look broken. It's part of their plan to keep Mastodon users on Mastodon in the wake of Mastodon's market share in the Fediverse shrinking.
Also, they did not publish any specifications on their quote-post implementation, so even those non-Mastodon developers who are fast enough didn't have a chance to implement support for Mastodon's opt-in.
This means that even if you've set your posts to un-quote-post-able on Mastodon, everything I've listed above can still quote-post you with no resistance.Absolute Fediverse-wide protection against being quote-posted is impossible
And don't get your hopes high that the day will come when nobody on the Fediverse will be able to quote-post you, whether they're on Mastodon or not. Such a setting is technologically impossible.
Who says that? Mike Macgirvin says that. The guy who launched Friendica and brought quote-posts to the Fediverse 15 years ago, remember? This guy has built the Fediverse's most elaborate, most complex, most fine-grained, most advanced permissions system into (streams) and Forte.
These two have reply control, the kind of which you couldn't image in your wildest dreams. I'm serious. They have permissions settings for almost everything on two or three levels, for your whole channel, individually per contact and sometimes even per post or per file or folder in the file storage.
But they don't have quote-post permission settings. Because that's impossible to enforce Fediverse-wide. And even if it was possible, it'd be pointless. If they can't quote-post you, they'll copy-paste you. If they can't copy-paste you either because they're on a phone, they'll post screenshots of your toots.
Mike also says, there is exactly one way to keep people from quote-posting you, and that's by not posting in public. Unfortunately, unlike what he has created, Mastodon has little between "public" and "DM", if anything.Mastodon cannot quote-post the non-Mastodon Fediverse
This may be the big surprise: It has recently been discovered by chance that Mastodon's quote-post feature only works with Mastodon toots.
On the one hand, Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Sharkey, Friendica, Hubzilla etc. can quote-post just about everything that comes in from Mastodon. But on the other hand, no Mastodon 4.5 user will be able to quote-post anything from either of these. Or from Pixelfed or PeerTube or Loops or Castopod or WriteFreely or whatever.
That's because Mastodon is looking for a quote-post opt-in. But nothing else in the Fediverse supports Mastodon's quote-post opt-in, also seeing as it's still officially in development. And it's highly unlikely that everything in the Fediverse will adopt another piece of non-standard, proprietary Mastodon tech."Quote" actually means something else
Lastly, Mastodon has the audacity to call this feature "quote".
A "quote" is something else. Remember forums? Like, bulletin-board forums with subforums and all? Where posts are quoted in follow-ups, entirely or only partially? That's what a quote is. That has got nothing to do with quote-posts.
Why I say that there's a difference? Because I also say that Friendica has had both quotes and quote-posts.
It has had them for 15 years, both quotes (which it calls "quotes", go figure) and quote-posts (which it calls "quoted shares", and which include the original author of the quoted post, complete with their profile picture and a clickable link to them, as well as a clickable link to the original post).
Hubzilla has both. (streams) has both. Forte has both. And I wouldn't be surprised if other Fediverse server software had both, too.
The irony is that Mastodon itself has been able to render actual quotes since version 4.0 from October, 2022. At the same time, it will continue to be unable to render any quote-posts done outside of Mastodon for the foreseeable future.

In the Fediverse, "server" doesn't mean "chatroom". It means "server". A computer.
For example, a rack computer with no screen and no keyboard and no mouse bolted into a server rack at a data centre.
Or an old laptop that someone had lying around or a Raspberry Pi mini-computer running at someone's home, connected to their landline.
On each one of these, a big or small Twitter can be running (Mastodon).
Or a wholly different Twitter (Pleroma, Akkoma, Misskey, Calckey, Firefish, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, Catodon, Meisskey, Tanukey, Neko...).

mastodon.social, where you are, is only one of over 10,000 big and small Twitters of the same kind (Mastodon).
If Mastodon was like Discord, all 10,000+ Mastodon servers would run in one and the same gigantic data centre in the USA, owned by Mastodon, Inc. And they would all be property of Mastodon, Inc.
If the Fediverse was like Discord, all 30,000+ Fediverse servers would run in one and the same gigantic data centre in the USA, owned by Mastodon, Inc. And they would all be property of Mastodon, Inc. Also, they would be fully identical in functionality.
But as I've said above: They're all running on their own separate machines. With their own separate owners.
And the different server applications have different developers, and they are being developed independently from one another.
Okay, now comes the kicker: These server applications are not walled up against one another. Not only are all instances of the same server applications (e.g. Mastodon) connected to each other, but all instances of one server application are also connected to all instances of all the other server applications.
Imagine you're on Twitter. But your new friend is on Facebook. You can't follow a Facebook user on Twitter, and you can't follow a Twitter user on Facebook.
In the Fediverse, you can. You can be on Twitter. And follow a Facebook user. Directly from Twitter. Without a Facebook account.
Only that they aren't named Twitter and Facebook in the Fediverse. Twitter is named Mastodon or Pleroma or Akkoma or Misskey or Calckey or Firefish or Iceshrimp or Sharkey or Catodon or... There are dozens of Twitter alternatives in the Fediverse. Well, and Facebook is named Friendica or Hubzilla or (streams) or Forte.
You can be on Mastodon. And you can follow Friendica accounts. From Mastodon. Without a Friendica account.
This comment is a very good example. You are on Mastodon, created by @Eugen Rochko in 2016 as an alternative to Twitter that aimed to be as close to Twitter as possible.
The server that you're on, mastodon.social, is owned by Mastodon, Inc. and running on one or multiple rack servers in San Francisco, California, USA owned by Fastly.
I am on Hubzilla, created by @Mike Macgirvin 🖥️ in 2012 by forking his own Friendica from 2010, and currently mainly maintained by @Mario Vavti and @Harald Eilertsen. Hubzilla has got nothing to do with Mastodon whatsoever. It started out as an alternative to Facebook, but not a clone, rather better than Facebook, with full-blown long-form blogging capability and a built-in file storage, and it has been enhanced greatly in functionality even beyond that.
The server that I'm on, Netzgemeinde, is owned and administered by @Mark Nowiasz, who has no affiliation with the Hubzilla developers, and running on a rack server in Nuremberg, Germany owned by Netcup.
And yet, you can see this comment coming from Hubzilla on Mastodon.

One of the worst aspects of Mastodon's plans to introduce quote-posts with a switch:
You keep having to tell Mastodon users that the Fediverse is not only Mastodon. That (insert a long list of Fediverse server applications here¹) have had quote-posts from the beginning. That they're all in the Fediverse. That they're all fully federated with Mastodon. That they can all quote-post any Mastodon toot they can possibly receive or import. And that they will be able to quote-post any Mastodon toot they can in the future, regardless of Mastodon account settings.
Up until this point, they were fully, firmly convinced that they're 100% safe from quote-posts on Mastodon. Either because they could not for the lives of them imagine that anything in the Fediverse has them. Or simply because they "knew" up until this point that the Fediverse is Mastodon. And if Mastodon introduces an opt-out or opt-in switch, this switch will mean absolute, 100% water-tight safety from quote-posts.
But for the Fediverse outside of Mastodon, the quote-post switch will be completely useless. Again: These lots of Fediverse server apps have had quote-posts before Mastodon introduced them. They had quote-posts before Mastodon invented the opt-in or opt-out switch. I mean, at least two of them have had quote-posts since before Mastodon even existed! So how are they supposed to support a proprietary, non-standard, Mastodon-specific switch which probably won't be documented anywhere before Mastodon rolls out quote-posts?
I'll tell you what'll happen.
Mastodon users will deactivate quote-posts for their accounts or not activate them in the first place. Non-Mastodon users, not knowing about the status of that switch, will quote-post them regardless with zero resistance. Upon which these Mastodon users will shit brix. And they'll call for either blocking that obviously rogue Mastodon user instance-wide, or blocking that user's instance, or Fediblocking that user's instance.
At this point, someone else who is not on Mastodon either will chime in and tell them: That particular user is, in fact, not on Mastodon. The Fediverse is not only Mastodon. That user is on Friendica. No, Friendica is not a rogue Mastodon instance. Friendica is not Mastodon at all. No, Friendica isn't a Mastodon fork either. Friendica has nothing to do with Mastodon. In fact, Friendica is older than Mastodon. On Friendica, quote-posts are perfectly normal. Friendica has had quote-posts for longer than Mastodon has even existed. And so forth.
Cue the Mastodon user shitting brix again, foaming with anger and calling for a Fediblock of all of Friendica.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that if Mastodon's quote-post feature and the rest of the Fediverse disregarding it leads to more awareness of the non-Mastodon Fediverse and its non-Mastodon features on Mastodon, it will also lead to demands for being able to completely block everything that isn't Mastodon, either on an account level (and then on by default, of course) or on an instance level or both.
Oh, by the way: The ability to completely lock out entire Fediverse projects already exists in the Fediverse right now, too. It's exclusive to two other Fediverse server apps that aren't Mastodon, both of which introduced this feature in September.

Also worth mentioning that quote boosts, which have also recently received funding, will include work on privacy and safety features around them, possibly extending to other areas of the online experience.
These "privacy and safety features" are non-sense.
They're proprietary, they're non-standard, they're Mastodon-specific. And they are expected to work only by respecting a proprietary, non-standard, Mastodon-specific quote-post permission flag which probably won't even be documented anywhere except Mastodon's server code.
The opt-out feature will only work within a 100% Mastodon bubble and even that only if no non-Mastodon user finds content from within this bubble by searching mastodon.social for hashtags.
Mastodon is selling its whole quote-post feature as a total revolution, as the very introduction of quote-posts to the Fediverse. And it will work. I've once run a poll on whether the Fediverse has quote-posts. 71% of all voters thought the Fediverse does not have quote-posts right now. And that was in my bubble which, in comparison to Mastodon in general, is fairly Fediverse-savvy and full of non-Mastodon users.
But as a matter of fact, the Fediverse does have quote-posts right now! Almost everything that can do microblogging in a way has quote-posts.
Pleroma has quote-posts.
Akkoma has quote-posts.
Misskey has quote-posts.
Firefish has quote-posts.
Iceshrimp has quote-posts.
Iceshrimp.NET has quote-posts.
Sharkey has quote-posts.
Catodon has quote-posts.
Friendica has quote-posts.
Hubzilla has quote-posts.
(streams) has quote-posts.
And so forth.
They haven't introduced quote-posts to spite Mastodon. Some of them have had quote-posts since before Mastodon even existed. Friendica, for example, was created with quote-posts available, and that was five and a half years before Mastodon was created. For as long as Mastodon has existed, Friendica could quote-post Mastodon toots. And so could Hubzilla, created ten months before Mastodon.
In fact, all of the above can quote-post any Mastodon toot right now, with no problems, with zero resistance.
Guess what'll change when Mastodon introduces quote-posts plus the opt-in switch.
Well, Mastodon will be able to quote-post. Mastodon might be able to display quote-posts from outside properly, but probably not because it's ignoring that the rest of the Fediverse can quote-post.
But the rest of the Fediverse will still be able to quote-post just about all Mastodon toots. With no problems. With zero resistance. Even with the opt-in switched to off.
Because that switch is proprietary, non-standard and Mastodon-specific. Because only Mastodon even supports it.
This switch will cause many many more Mastodon users to learn the hard way that the Fediverse is more than Mastodon. Namely by encountering a post or comment from something that does not behave like Mastodon. And many many more Mastodon users will shit bricks in sheer terror upon this revelation.
If Mastodon really wanted this switch to be 100% waterproof, it would have to implement the feature request in its entirety. That includes defederation from all Fediverse instances that don't respect the opt-in switch.
Mind you, the defederation clause and the entire feature request came from someone in the firm belief that the Fediverse is Mastodon, only Mastodon and nothing but Mastodon. Just like about every other Mastodon user out there. So it was only targetted at rogue Mastodon instances with hacked source code.
In reality, however, it would require entire non-Mastodon Fediverse projects to be Fediblocked because they can quote-post without respecting Mastodon's quote-post opt-in switch.
All instances of Pleroma, of Akkoma, of Misskey, of Firefish, of Iceshrimp including Iceshrimp.NET, of Sharkey, of Catodon, of Friendica, of Hubzilla, of (streams) and so forth would have to be Fediblocked because they can quote-post without respecting Mastodon's quote-post opt-in switch. Every last one of them.
Mastodon's quote-post feature will either cause a rift through the Fediverse if this rule is put into action or even more people to shit bricks in terror and escape to Bluesky if it isn't.

There's a whole lot more stuff in the Fediverse, and all of it is connected to Mastodon just like Mastodon instances are connected to one another.
For example, there are dozens of other Twitter-like microblogging projects. Mastodon forks such as Glitch or Hometown. Pleroma. Pleroma forks such as Akkoma. Misskey. Dozens of Misskey forks such as Firefish, Iceshrimp, Sharkey, Catodon, Hajkey, Meisskey etc.
There are "Reddit clones" like Lemmy or /kbin.
There is the "Instagram clone" Pixelfed.
There is the YouTube stand-in PeerTube.
There is the Twitch stand-in Owncast.
There are the "Medium clones" WriteFreely and Plume.
There is the "Goodreads clone" BookWyrm.
There are the Facebook alternatives Friendica and (streams) as well as Hubzilla which goes well beyond being a Facebook alternative.
And a lot more.
All this is in the Fediverse, and all this is connected to Mastodon, whether you want or not. It's normal. It's intended. It's the very idea behind the Fediverse. And it has always been the idea behind the Fediverse.
Look at my mentions, how weird they look. Look at my hashtags, how weird they look. Look at this post and how it exceeds 500 characters. Look at my bold type. Look at my italics. All stuff that Mastodon can't do.
But how can I possibly do it if Mastodon can't do it?
Because I'm not on Mastodon. I'm on Hubzilla. Hubzilla is not a Mastodon instance. Hubzilla is not even a Mastodon fork. Hubzilla is developed completely independently from Mastodon. And Hubzilla is almost a year older than Mastodon. And yet, I can read what you've posted, and I can reply to you.
That's because Hubzilla is part of the Fediverse, just like Mastodon is. And it has always been.

I'm a computer science graduate and have been working in the digital area for ten years now. I've been on the #FreeSoftware scene since my college days on and off for over ten years now, and in fact I've taken it so seriously, that this message has been posted from my #SelfHosted server in my own house in Santa Ana.

@Codex ☯️♈☮ @CynthesisToday I think the #Fediverse is the easiest to understand for those who halfway know their way around computer stuff if you start at the protocol level.
#ActivityPub is a digital communications protocol standard. Like e-mail or RSS or Atom or XMPP or Matrix, for example. Or like #StatusNet or the #Diaspora protocol or #DFRN or #Zot, now known as #Nomad in its latest incarnation.
The server application projects that are based on ActivityPub are different server-side software implementations of the same protocol. Some have more features, some have fewer, some specialise in particular tasks which is possible because ActivityPub is not specialised itself, not a one-trick pony.
Like, for XMPP, you have jabberd and ejabberd and Openfire and Prosody and Tigase. For e-mail, you've got various mail servers and MTAs.
The main difference here is that ActivityPub is so versatile in its capabilities that it can be used for a whole lot of different things. #Mastodon, #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #MissKey, #CalcKey etc. were made for microblogging. But ActivityPub can also be used for actual blogging platforms like #Plume or #WriteFreely, for video streaming like in the cases of #PeerTube and #Owncast, for audio streaming like in the cases of #Funkwhale and #Castopod and for link aggregators/discussion communities like in the cases of #Lemmy and #kbin. Only to name a few examples.
Still, there are enough parts of this protocol fixed so that all these projects, all these implementations of ActivityPub can connect to one another and ideally communicate with one another.
Now, why is all this made so that they can connect to one another?
That's because they all use the same protocol. The alternative would have been to do like Mike MacGirvin did with DFRN for #Mistpark, later #Friendika, today known as #Friendica, and create a whole new protocol from scratch, even though StatusNet was readily available. Well, only that Mike's intention was to federate Friendica with everything that moved, regardless of protocol.
Okay, better comparison: The alternative would have been to do like the four Diaspora* creators and create a whole new protocol from scratch with no intention whatsoever to connect to the outside world.
Well, instead, all those clones of YouTube and Instagram and Reddit and GoodReads and so forth chose ActivityPub. It was a win-win situation: They could use an existing protocol which actually worked for them instead of taking upon themselves designing a whole new protocol first and then their server application on top. And they could expect a wider audience, namely everything else that uses ActivityPub. Two birds, one stone.
Oh, and by the way: Neither the Fediverse nor ActivityPub was designed around Mastodon, nor was ActivityPub designed by Eugen Rochko (Mike Macgirvin did have some saying in it, though, AFAIK), and quite a few Fediverse projects already existed before Mastodon. Pleroma is three and a half weeks older. MissKey is two years older AFAIK. #Hubzilla was forked from Friendica four years before Mastodon came out. This means that Friendica has to be even older: six years older than Mastodon.
None of these projects will ever give in to Mastodon's limitations and reduce their own feature set for the convenience of Mastodon users. Oh, and neither will the projects that came after Mastodon. If something from another Fediverse project doesn't look good on Mastodon, it's Mastodon's problem. -

For example, generally it is understood that:
* #Mastodon, and its forks, is a heavy on the backend for a solo instance.
* #Misskey, #Calckey, #Foundkey, #Meisskey, and other forks, are the “medium” class on the backend for a solo instance.
* While #Pleroma, and its forks ( #Akkoma and #Rebased), are the lightweight class.
Of course, they have different UI and UX, features, and what not.
If you plan to have a family/friends-only instance, there are #Friendica and #Hubzilla. Both are more #SNS-like similar to Facebook, in terms of approach and features. Also, they have an amazing set of permissions, which gives users a greater control on their #privacy settings. For Hubzilla, and its sister project #Streams, they have the most requested feature: #DataPortability (which it calls #NomadicIdentity). You can clone your channel/profile in other Hubzilla and Streams server, they will always be kept in sync, and if one instance goes down… you can just login to the other instance you cloned into earlier. You can also setup to have a solo Hubzilla or Streams server, and have a separate one for family and friends, and have your channel/profile cloned there.

CW: tl;dr: All that cool new stuff you want in the Fediverse already exists in the Fediverse, right outside of Mastodon
I keep seeing lots of people who are totally giddy about the #Fediverse, who are gushing over it, who want to promote it, who want it to spread.
And who want it to advance. To learn new abilities. To grow new features.
That's all fine and dandy.
But almost all of these people are still fully convinced that the Fediverse equals #Mastodon. And nothing else. At least not until Tumblr and P92 join the fray. Okay, maybe the #WordPress plug-in that's the talk of the town now that it has become official. Okay, maybe a few of them have also heard of #Pixelfed and/or #PeerTube because their makers are all over the Fediverse.
When these people are talking about the Fediverse, they mean Mastodon. And when they're thinking about the Fediverse, they're only thinking about Mastodon. Because that's all they know.
So these people want new cool features or even new cool use-cases in the Fediverse, stuff that Mastodon doesn't have. They want Mastodon to have it, or they want new projects to be launched that have these features.
If only they knew.
If only they knew that everything, literally everything they propose has already been done. Yes, in the Fediverse. In projects which are fully federated with Mastodon. Why don't they know? Because they've never heard of any of these projects, much less what they can do.
So they want "quote-tweets" in the Fediverse. Which means they want Mastodon to introduce them.
Tell you what: Mastodon is the only microblogging project in the Fediverse that doesn't have quotes. Not only will Eugen Rochko never introduce them, but all the other projects have them with Mastodon forks #GlitchSoc such as being the exception. #Pleroma has them. #Akkoma has them. #MissKey has them. #CalcKey has them. #FoundKey has them. #GoToSocial has them. The old heavyweights #Friendica and #Hubzilla have them, and so does Hubzilla's youngest decendant, the #Streams project. Et cetera.
You want "quote-tweets"? Switch to something that isn't Mastodon, and you've got "quote-tweets".
Or text formatting in posts like bold type, italics, underline, strikethrough,code blocksetc. Would be great if Mastodon had that, in spite of other people saying they don't want it.
Again: Pleroma already has it. Akkoma already has it. MissKey already has it. CalcKey already has it. FoundKey already hasit. GoToSocial already has it. Friendica already has it. Hubzilla already has it (look at this post at its source in a Web browser and weep). (streams) already has it. And so forth. This time, even Mastodon forks have it.
It has been done. It has been done many times. It has actually been done before Mastodon.
Next, long-form blog posting. We need something like #Medium in the Fediverse that isn't Medium itself. Mastodon's 500 characters are too few, and Twitter-like threads are inconvenient.
Except we already have that, too. #Plume and #WriteFreely are about as close to Medium as Mastodon is to Twitter, including clean and distraction-less layouts. Oh, and Hubzilla can do that, too.
By the way: Again, Mastodon is the only Fediverse project that can do microblogging that has a 500-character limit. Pleroma, Mastodon's oldest direct competitor, raised it to a default of 6,000. MissKey and its forks have 3,000 as a default. Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) have character limits of "go ahead, drop your short story in one post in its entirety," so virtually none at all. And yes, Hubzilla has long-form writing on top of that.
Speaking of Hubzilla: Most recently, there has been the idea to uncouple one's online identity from a specific instance. Your online self should no longer be firmly tied to any one server exclusively. Now, this sounds so ambitious, it might just as well be science-fiction.
What if I told you that just this very thing already exists as well?
No, really. No, I'm not making this up. But you should know by now that I'm not.
Better yet: It was conceived as early as 2011. By the guy who launched Friendica in 2010. He invented a new principle named #NomadicIdentity and a new protocol named #Zot. In its early stages already, even with no technical implementation yet, Zot was more powerful than ActivityPub is today.
In 2012, Zot became reality as the basis of a Friendica fork which later became known as #RedMatrix and, upon its 1.0 stable release in late 2015, which is still prior to Mastodon's initial release, Hubzilla. Hubzilla is still being developed and improved, and it has a fledgling but growing "successor of a successor" named (streams) which offers nomadic identity, too.
Now, what does this nomadic identity even look like? Well, not only does it let you move your channel(s) around from instance to instance with ease and, unlike on Mastodon, with absolutely everything on it. No, it also lets you have your channel on multiple instances at once. Identical clones, automagically kept in sync in real-time, all with the same identity, the same content, the same connections.
Your identity is no longer strapped down to one instance. Not only that, but your channel, your posts, your content is no longer hosted on only one server. This means that if one instance with one of your clones goes down, you still have spares.
Okay, so how about community groups/forums? That'd be cool.
Well, for one, there's #Guppe. It's basically bolted on Mastodon, and in practice, it's centralised because there's only one instance. But it's impractical to use.
Besides, this is becoming a running gag here, Friendica, Hubzilla and (streams) have exactly this built-in and open for the rest of the Fediverse.
Better yet: There's also #Lemmy which amounts to a federated #Reddit or #HackerNews clone. So not only does Lemmy offer this, it specialises in it.
Hubzilla alone can provide Fediverse feature suggestions with "has been done" for years to come. Not to mention what else the Fediverse has to offer. Even if someone should want a free, non-commercial, decentralised, federated #GoodReads clone in the Fediverse, it has been done: #BookWyrm. -

Streams is basically an acknowledgement that my work has no value to anybody but me.
The lack of popularity for #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Zap & Co. never came from nobody caring.
It always came from nobody even knowing that they exist in the first place.
In 2010, people were ready and willing to pump a few hundred thousand US dollars into the development of #Diaspora. They hoped that Diaspora* would be a free, decentralised Social Web revolution. But the development of Diaspora* took an eternity, and out came something lack-lustre and underwhelming that spent several years in public alpha.
Why didn't people save their money and use #Friendika instead which was everything they had dreamed of and then some? Which was vastly more powerful in spring 2010 before Diaspora* was developed than Diaspora* itself would ever become? Why was Diaspora* developed in the first place? Why was the wheel re-invented, but worse?
Because nobody knew that Friendika existed. That's why. Diaspora* made it into all big news because its developers a) announced to mass media that they want to compete with #Facebook and b) asked people for crowdfunding, hence the big publicity campaign. If Friendika had been as well-known as, for example, #Firefox, Diaspora* wouldn't exist.
I myself only found Friendika back in the day by actively searching the Web for decentralised social network platforms. It was a thorough, intense search. And I eventually stumbled upon it.
As for Hubzilla, I happened upon it on Friendica when someone mentioned it.
As for #Osada and #Zap, I think it was you who mentioned them within the Hubzilla dev bubble which I occasionally got a glance into. Someone from that bubble also led me to #Misty a.k.a. #Mistpark2020.
As for #Roadhouse and #Streams, I discovered them on Zotlabs by chance. And their Zotlabs pages were never filled with any information on what they are and what they do.
I didn't find out about any of these projects through any form of advertising or publicity campaign, nor did I learn about any of them through tech media.
Only once do I recall that any of these projects has ever been presented at a FLOSS or hacker event. That was years ago at the #ChaosCommunicationCongress where a panel about Friendica was held. But even that panel was like Friendica devs talking to other devs about developing Friendica and Friendica node admins talking to other LAMP stack admins about installing and running Friendica nodes. What Friendica can do was only mentioned briefly. The first step, namely getting people interested in using Friendica as end users to see what it's good for, was skipped entirely. And there was no info booth, there was no promotional material, there were no flyers, no nothing. Even #OpenStreetMap had flyers.
#Mastodon was just lucky. For starters, it was the first free and decentralised microblogging service that was launched in years. The whole #StatusNet and #GNUsocial things had been so long ago that even those few who had come across it barely remembered, so Mastodon didn't seem like it was aping them. And it must have attracted enough disgruntled #birdsite users already then to gain a critical mass.
Before 2022, we already had a situation in which the vast majority of Mastodon users believed that the #Fediverse was Mastodon, and Mastodon was the Fediverse, and there was nothing else out there. Pleroma was already vastly superior to Mastodon technologically, but Mastodon had the critical mass. Still, Mastodon itself was so obscure that #TimBernersLee had never heard of it, much less of any of your projects or Diaspora*, and therefore decided to re-invent the free, open-source, non-commercial, decentralised social wheel all from scratch once more.
When the #TwitterTakeover started looming on the horizon, people started recommending Mastodon on #Twitter. And pretty much only Mastodon because that was all they knew. Again, critical mass. This critical mass enlarged itself in several waves.
I guess not a single birdsite refugee had ever heard of any Fediverse project beyond Mastodon when they joined it, and I guess over 80% still never have. And they keep wondering how people can toot more than 500 characters, whether their Mastodon instance has different settings and such. I know from personal experience that it often takes several attempts to explain to people that, no, I am not on Mastodon, and Hubzilla is not a Mastodon instance.
Mass media don't make it any better. Both general news media and tech media have meanwhile picked up the Mastodon phenomenon, and many have accepted that Mastodon is here to stay. Still, all general news media and nearly all tech media "know" that Mastodon is the Fediverse and vice versa, and that there isn't anything else out there. Some media outlets have joined the Fediverse themselves. They could be way better off with #Akkoma or #Pixelfed or Hubzilla or their own take on Streams. But they're on Mastodon. Why? Because that's all they knew when they got there. Because they've settled with Mastodon before even knowing that there are projects that'd suit them better. And they'll probably never know.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming you personally. I'm not even sure if it's good style for the main dev of a project to go peddling their own work. Making your projects known should have been a task for the whole community. Not only the devs, not only the hub admins, but the users. Because if someone can talk to aspiring users, it's actual users. "If you build it, they will come" has failed, and we should have seen this coming.
Large-scale migration away from proprietary, commercial projects and towards free, open-source, non-commercial alternatives only happens under pressure from outside and even then not always. Large-scale adoption of Firefox in Germany happened when the most widely-used browser was #InternetExplorer 6 which was not only hopelessly outdated but so insecure that the malware spread through it alone caused millions upon millions of Euros in damage. And it only happened because the reaction upon this was our Mother Of The Nation, Federal Chancellor #AngelaMerkel, herself telling the Germans to move from IE6 to Firefox.
And the mass migration from Twitter to Mastodon only happened for two reasons: One, Twitter was threatening to get more and more hard to take. Two, Twitter didn't and still doesn't really have a commercial, corporate-owned, centralised competitor. All possible Twitter alternatives are decentralised #FLOSS. There was nowhere else to go than down the Fediverse route.
Right now, however, I don't see a #Facebook takeover that'd turn it into yet another Nazi hive and cause people to flee to Friendica and/or Hubzilla. Nor does #OlafScholz tell people to quit Facebook and join Friendica/Hubzilla instead. He doesn't even tell people to join Mastodon.
No, growth for Friendica, Hubzilla and Streams still has to come from within. And again, this won't be a task for the core devs. All they'll have to do is tell the community what there is to advertise. But I don't expect anything really new to come anytime soon, seeing as Streams seems to be a be-all, end-all project that can be turned into anything without involvement by the core devs. So we already know what there basically is to advertise. And when it comes to cool new features, we learn about them quickly when new versions come around, and the devs do talk about these beforehand.
So the first step would be to get these projects known outside the #DFRN, #Zot and #Nomad bubble. This would lead us into two different, bigger bubbles. One is the Fediverse which, as I've already mentioned, the vast majority of its own users still sees as synonymous with Mastodon. Granted, we'd have tough competition there, for if someone desires more than 500 characters per post, maybe they're better off with Akkoma or a different Mastodon instance. And federation with Diaspora* is no longer a unique selling point because hardly anyone uses Diaspora* exclusively anymore, so I guess hardly anyone misses the Diaspora* connector on Streams. But maybe a "federated social Swiss army knife" like Friendica or even Hubzilla or a "federated social construction kit" like Streams is exactly what some people are looking for. Remember that the Fediverse alone covers millions of people. 1% of them is slowly but steadily closing in on being 100,000.
The other bubble is the FLOSS scene. This may be more difficult because, curiously, the FLOSS scene barely knows about the Fediverse, even about Mastodon, and thus has barely adopted it. This will be somewhat tougher. Some people in that scene reject social media altogether because they associate social media with corporate spyware, and they've convinced themselves that they don't need any social media (or their social media hub is either a git repository hoster, ironically often a #Microsoft property, or a mailing list). Others have a general dislike towards GUIs, only using ultra-minimalist #i3wm and no pointing devices themselves. Or they cling to the UNIX philosophy that each tool has to be able to only do one thing which gets to the point that they actually use different tools for receiving, composing and sending e-mails. Even Friendica can do too much for their tastes.
Still, I think that other people in the FLOSS bubble may be more welcoming, also because the Fediverse is yet another rather successful attempt at competing against corporate monopolies with FLOSS, with decentralised FLOSS à la #XMPP or #Matrix even. Also, while the #GAFAM bubble sees us as a bunch of idealistic but ultimately successless basement-dwelling nerds, the FLOSS bubble will see us as some of their own ilk doing more cool stuff in addition to all the cool stuff that has already been done. Not to mention that the FLOSS bubble has its own news outlets. We just must not repeat the mistake of only trying to talk to potential devs or potential instance admins. We have to reach out to aspiring end users first and foremost. Devs and admins will come in their wake. FLOSS people aren't keen on developing something they've never even tried using.
Media coverage outside the FLOSS bubble might give us an even wider audience. Sure, it may appear like even specialised tech media aren't interested in anything that isn't commercial. And some outlets do flat-out refuse to publish anything about anything FLOSS, or they only write about whoever pays them to write about them. But generally, they don't have an aversion against FLOSS alternatives to commercial products. Mass media helped Firefox spread. Mass media helped Diaspora* exceed their crowd-funding goal buy suggesting it'll be a Facebook killer. And mass media are right now accepting Mastodon and the Fediverse as the next big thing instead of some wacky nerd stuff. It may actually happen that media outlets which still reject the Fediverse in favour of Twitter will be seen as not only backwards-oriented, but outright right-wing.
It's hard to say how easy it'd be in 2023 to even only get tech media to write about Friendica, Hubzilla or even Streams. On the one hand, there may still be an attitude of, "Nobody wants to read about it if it wasn't launched with venture capital." On the other hand, the Fediverse itself has more than one foot in the door, what with journalists joining Mastodon and entire media outlets launching their own instances. All we have to do is get the knowledge into their heads that the Fediverse is more than Mastodon. Maybe they'll find this discovery so amazing that they'll write about it.
I think Friendica would be the easiest case. Okay, it'll be hard to treat something as cool new stuff if it has been around for 13 years or so. But it isn't so modular, it's more like an all-in-one "black box" of the kind that non-techy types prefer, and it concentrates on social networking and doesn't overwhelm its users with features, at least not that much. Also, it's the closes to being "to Facebook what Mastodon is to Twitter."
Hubzilla could mainly score with its sheer, all-encompassing power. It's certainly the most powerful, most versatile Fediverse project. This, however, may make it too powerful for casuals. It's also more modular than Friendica which means that many cool features, even including #ActivityPub support, have to be activated by the user. That said, Hubzilla's main issues, its user interface which capitulates before its vast amount of features, its documentation which reads more like a technical spec than a user manual and its outdated and less-than-welcoming representation on the Web, are being tackled as we speak (or rather type). Thanks to @Scott M. Stolz, Hubzilla may soon have one or multiple user interfaces that make it much easier to harness its vast power and flexibility.
Streams, or (streams) as some spell it, is still the odd one out. I must admit that even experienced Hubzilla veterans often have a hard time understanding what it actually is, much less Mastodon users, not to mention the GAFAM-only bubble. While bone-stock Streams itself is easier to use than Hubzilla, partly thanks to a reworked UI, partly thanks to lots of features having been cut and therefore no longer cluttering the UI, the whole concept may be confusing to many. It's not only even less of a "black box" than Hubzilla, it isn't a project or even a platform like Mastodon or Friendica at all; it's only a code repository which you can yoink and make something nice out of. Streams says, "Fork me!" It wasn't made to be run vanilla as a Zap successor which is a rather subversive idea. In fact, running Streams as-is is subverting the subversion again; it doesn't help that vanilla Streams makes for a decent Fediverse server already.
So Streams will be difficult to explain even to tinker-happy FLOSS people, its main target audience, and even more so to those who have only just left the commercial, corporate software bubble they had called their cosy home for many years and managed to wrap their minds around Mastodon. What Streams needs more than Hubzilla is reference implementations that show in practice rather than in theory what can be done with it. I mean, it's hard enough to grasp that Hubzilla can serve as a macroblog or a wiki until you've seen it happen with your own eyes.
A typical Hubzilla reference implementation would be a regular instance with all bells and whistles with open registration (until it's full, that is). People can join it, play around with it and make it their social homebase. Along with it, there could be Hubzilla instances that aren't social networking platforms but something different, yet still "powered by Hubzilla" as would be written on them. These could show Hubzilla's versatility. Something you were told is "something like Facebook" suddenly powers a blog. Or a community webpage, including a public event calendar. Or a wiki. Or a personal website with a personal DAV cloud server silently running in the background. Things that make Hubzilla get away with ActivityPub being optional, especially if these websites have nomadic clones. In this case, #Zot only serves to keep the clones in sync.
With Streams, the focus should be vice-versa. It'd be more important to show off what can be done on top of Streams or by forking Streams and making something nice and "unexpected" with it, preferably with multiple identical nomadic clones to show off what #Nomad can do, but still with a "powered by Streams" badge on it. A social networking platform or two could come later and mainly to demonstrate that Streams can do that, too. If this came first, Streams would be reduced to being "the next Friendica" or the next attempt at a Facebook competitor, and nobody would try to use it for anything else. Rather than that, Streams deserves a reputation as "nomadic WordPress" at the very least.
There's a lot that can be done to help these projects gain popularity. Some of it is already being done, especially for Hubzilla. And Streams can be given some time to take off, new as it is. Sitting around and waiting for people to come only gains us those who came from Twitter to Mastodon and then happened upon Friendica or Hubzilla through posts with over 500 characters.
