"A methane gas well caught fire in a remote area around 9:30 a.m. in Wasco near Palm Avenue and Phillips Road. An evacuation order was issued for a half mile radius, according to #Genasys.

"Officials say they were able to extinguish the fire, the leak is no longer active and the evacuation order has been lifted.

"Events leading up to the fire and gas leak are not immediately known."

"#Methane is a harmful component for the planet, but researchers have found a way to use it for the environment’s betterment, as published in the journal Energy & Environment Nexus. Methane is an invisible and dangerous gas, as it traps heat faster than carbon dioxide. This enhances global warming. Methane gets incorporated into the atmosphere through coal mines, wastewater plants, landfills, and farms. Most of this gas gets released from places with oxygen-deficient conditions. To monitor their content in the atmosphere, researchers suggest taking help from the methane-eating bacteria called #methanotrophs. These microbes ingest methane as food and break it down using enzymes. This breakdown process transforms methane into #CarbonDioxide.

"Researchers believe that with the right conditions, humans can utilize methanotrophs to reduce harmful methane emissions. The final product of the breakdown, carbon dioxide, is more manageable in terms of global warming. If methane remains in the atmosphere for a century, it heats the planet 28 times more than carbon dioxide. Methane-eating microbes grow naturally in oxygen-deficient circumstances, which implies that they are already present in places from where most methane is released into the atmosphere. Past evaluations reveal that methanotrophs already remove a large share of methane from the atmosphere.

"Strengthening this process could further reduce #GlobalWarming. If researchers achieve this feat, it will reduce the need of energy heavy machines or chemicals, currently used for the pursuit. Through human intervention, methane can be converted into useful products, like cleaner fuels, animal feed, and biodegradable plastics, through the reduction done by methanotrophs. These microbes, by turning methane into valuable materials, also cut down on harmful emissions. Large-scale use of methanotrophs can supposedly trigger low-energy manufacturing pathways, which can significantly slow down climate warming."

"A large amount of methane is bubbling up from the ocean floor east of Siberia at a surprising rate and could accelerate climate change, researchers said yesterday.

The gas is bubbling up from the East Siberian Arctic Shelf because warming ocean water is thawing permafrost, allowing methane trapped underneath to escape. The amount of methane emitted by that one patch of seabed roughly equals the amount scientists believed was released by all of the world's oceans."

"Deep beneath the permafrost that blankets a group of islands in the #ArcticOcean lurks a growing and migrating sea of methane, researchers have discovered.

"The thick permafrost, or ground that remains frozen for at least two years, forms a tight seal that has so far prevented millions of cubic feet of methane from wafting out — but there's no guarantee that the potent greenhouse gas won't eventually escape, according to a study published Dec. 13 in the journal Frontiers in Earth Science.

"At present, the leakage from below permafrost is very low, but factors such as glacial retreat and permafrost thawing may 'lift the lid' on this in the future," lead author Thomas Birchall, a geologist at the University Center in Svalbard in Norway, said in a statement."

The source of the methane used to be a mystery, but a joint Swedish-Russian-U.S. investigation recently discovered that an ancient gas reservoir is responsible for the bubbly leaks.

"Methane in the Laptev Sea is stored in reservoirs below the sea’s submarine permafrost or in the form of methane hydrates—solid ice-like structures that trap the gas inside. It is also produced by microbes in the thawing permafrost itself. Not all of these sources are created equal: Whereas microbial methane is released in a slow, gradual process, disintegrating hydrates and reservoirs can lead to sudden, eruptive releases.

"Methane is escaping as the Laptev’s submarine permafrost is thawed by the relative warmth of overlying seawater.

"With an even stronger greenhouse effect than #CarbonDioxide, methane releases into the atmosphere could substantially amplify global warming."

"One of the worst #MethaneLeaks ever recorded took place last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan, new analysis shared with BBC Verify has shown.

"It is estimated that 127,000 tonnes of the gas escaped when a blowout started a fire that raged for over six months.

"Methane is much more potent a #GreenhouseGas than carbon dioxide.

"#BuzachiNeft, the company that owns the well, denies a 'substantial amount' of methane was leaked.

"According to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Equivalency Calculator, the environmental impact of such a leak is comparable to that of driving more than 717,000 petrol cars for a year.

"'The magnitude and the duration of the leak is frankly unusual,' said Manfredi Caltagirone, head of the UN's International Methane Emissions Observatory. 'It is extremely big.'

"The leak began on 9 June 2023, when a blowout was reported during drilling at an exploration well in the #Mangistau region, southwestern Kazakhstan, starting a fire that raged continuously until the end of the year.

"It was only brought under control on 25 December 2023. Local authorities told the BBC work is currently being carried out to seal the well with cement."

"Permafrost is ground that remains frozen for at least two years. It covers about 15% of the Earth’s land surface and contains large amounts of organic matter that can release methane when thawed. Methane is 28 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas over 100 years.

Svalbard as cold storage

"#Svalbard has a long history of geological and glacial activity, making it similar to other parts of the Arctic region. The researchers used historical data from commercial and research wells to map the permafrost across Svalbard and identify areas where gas accumulations were present.

"They found that gas accumulations were much more common than expected. Of 18 hydrocarbon exploration wells drilled in #Svalbard, eight showed evidence of #permafrost and half of these struck gas accumulations.

"'All the wells that encountered gas accumulations did so by coincidence - by contrast, hydrocarbon exploration wells that specifically target accumulations in more typical settings had a success rate far below 50%,' said Dr Thomas Birchall of the University Center in Svalbard, lead author of the study published in Frontiers in Earth Science."
