#Methane gas leak [and FIRE] in #WascoCA under control

    by: Jacqueline Gutierrez
    Posted: Jan 23, 2026

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — "A methane gas leak that prompted an evacuation in Wasco is now under control, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

"A methane gas well caught fire in a remote area around 9:30 a.m. in Wasco near Palm Avenue and Phillips Road. An evacuation order was issued for a half mile radius, according to #Genasys.

"Officials say they were able to extinguish the fire, the leak is no longer active and the evacuation order has been lifted.

"Events leading up to the fire and gas leak are not immediately known."

  4. Satellite Images Reveal #MegaLeaks of Potent Greenhouse Gas

UCLA's #StopMethaneProject ranked the 25 oil and gas sites with the largest methane emissions rates worldwide.

    By Ellyn Lapointe
    Published March 18, 2026

"Researchers with the Stop Methane Project at the University of California, Los Angeles, used data from #CarbonMapper—a non-profit that uses remote sensing technology to pinpoint and quantify methane emissions—to rank these mega-leaks. They’re spread across a small handful of countries, including the #US, with the majority in #Turkmenistan. A whopping 15 of the 25 largest leaks are concentrated in this #authoritarian state."

  5. Feds Are Downplaying #MethaneLeaks in America’s Biggest #OilField, Satellite Data Suggests

A report found #MethaneEmissions in the #PermianBasin to be nearly four times higher than #EPA estimates. A senator wants an explanation.

    By Ellyn Lapointe
    Published March 20, 2026

"#FossilFuel extraction is a known source of #methane leaks, releasing large amounts of this potent #GreenhouseGas into the atmosphere. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency appears to be drastically underreporting emissions from the nation’s largest oil-producing region.

"Nearly half of U.S. oil comes from the Permian Basin in West #Texas and southeastern #NewMexico. The region generates more than $100 billion annually for the U.S. economy, and apparently, a whole lot of methane, too. A recent report from #MethaneSAT—a methane-sensing satellite that observed Earth from March 2024 to June 2025—found emissions from the Permian Basin to be nearly four times higher than the EPA’s official estimates."

  6. #Colorado’s #OilAndGas industry is vastly underestimating #methane emissions

    Jennifer Oldham
Thu, February 26, 2026 at 6:00 AM EST

Excerpt: "A unique aerial measurement campaign found that emission inventories compiled by energy companies to account for planet-warming methane leaking from equipment on Colorado oil and gas production sites undercount such #pollutants by at least two times.

"Results from the $3.25 million project, led by a team of university researchers and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, provided officials for the first time with a more complete picture of the invisible pollutant emitted from well pads. #FossilFuel extraction is the state’s second-largest source of methane pollution, which has a global warming potential roughly 80 times that of carbon dioxide during a 20-year period."

  7. CW: Dryer weather decreases soil methane emissions (yay!)

    @rdnielsen

Just a note because I had misunderstood it first:

"Our analysis shows an increase in CH4-uptake of 3% *per year* on average."

Finally, not so bad news! I mean, it still shows that ecosystems are massively affected by climate change, but since until now almost all feedbacks loops we discovered were positive (=self-enhancing, like thawing permafrost reinforcing climate change).

Before opening a bottle of champagne (or a cup of teas, whatever you like): Not sure how this decrease in soil methane emissions stands in comparison with stuff like reduced plant growth because of changing weather and changes in soil organic matter dynamics (i. e. increased mineralization).

Has anybody numbers/estimates at hand for comparison?

PD: we still need #degrowth and a transition to #agroecology

  8. Mary Kang (Civil Engineering, McGill) gave us an entertaining and possibly hopeful talk (despite the topic) focused on quantifying fugitive methane emissions. One disturbing figure: their survey of inactive (non-producing wells) suggests continuing methane emissions seven times that of Canada's National Inventory Report. Hopeful in that much of these emissions are from a fraction of the total wells and therefor easier to stop.

  9. This combo of stories speaks volumes about the state of NZ climate policy;

"Planet-heating methane is escaping from cracks in the Antarctic seabed as the region warms ..."

"Government lowers methane target, rules out methane taxes"

  11. #Siberia: Residents stunned after strange new formations appear across remote landscape: 'The landscape has become pockmarked'

    by Zachary Ehrmann
    Fri, May 16, 2025

"Thawing ground in Siberia's remote #YamalPeninsula is warping the landscape — and residents say the changes are becoming impossible to ignore. Strange mounds, sudden sinkholes, and even explosive craters are reshaping the #tundra, alarming locals and researchers alike, per the Malay Mail.

"These changes are tied to a disturbing trend beneath the surface: the rapid thaw of once-frozen ground, known as #permafrost.

    What's happening?

"As Siberia warms at nearly four times the global average, vast stretches of permafrost are thawing. When this frozen ground melts, it releases methane gas from ancient organic material once safely locked beneath the surface.

"In the Yamal region, that gas is pushing the earth upward into large mounds that sometimes explode, tearing open the landscape and leaving behind deep craters.

"Innokenty Poselsky, who bought land in Churapcha, noted that he had about 20 mounds pop up but that it wasn't always like that. 'About 40 years ago, there was an airstrip here and the land used to be quite flat. Over the last four decades, the landscape has become pockmarked. It's like that everywhere here,' he told the Malay Mail.

"Local villagers, many of whom rely on the tundra for #reindeer herding, say their homeland has become nearly unrecognizable. One herder told researchers that familiar flatlands have been replaced by unpredictable swells and holes.

Why is the thawing of Siberia's permafrost important?

"Beyond changing the physical landscape, permafrost melt poses major threats to communities and the planet. Thawing ground can damage roads, #pipelines, and homes. #Methane, the gas being released, is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term. That means this process isn't just a local hazard — it's a global #climate risk.

"Thawing permafrost can also accelerate other problems. Warmer, wetter conditions can spread disease, disrupt food systems, and increase the severity of #ExtremeWeather events by adding more heat-trapping polluting gases to the atmosphere.

"While extreme events such as #wildfires and #floods aren't new, scientists agree that a hotter planet — caused by human activity, mainly the burning of #FossilFuels — makes them both more destructive and more frequent."
