Literature reviews are a fundamental part of any research and writing reseach papers. Given that almost all scientific/academic research is based on, or builds upon precedents. I don’t understand how we got to where we are today. Maybe the way #managerialism has corrupted many fine institutions with the ensuing #NeoLiberalFailures resulting in a lack of public funding and a scurrying for non-public funds (a potentially corrupting actor in any research) is the prime cause.

We;ve failed our #Scientific and #Academic Institutions and continue to fail them with each successive neoliberal govt.

  6. What the blazes is going on in our #EducationSystem ? Is this another example of #Managerialism going wrong?

“Dr McNeill was appointed CEO in June 2025, but while applying for the role, did not tell the CIT board she was under investigation by TAFE NSW for "serious misconduct".

The controversy sparked the public inquiry, which led to an assembly committee making seven recommendations and 11 findings, including that Dr McNeill should have disclosed the information about the misconduct investigation to the CIT board in a timely manner.

Dr McNeill told the committee that she had sought to disclose the investigation to CIT during the recruitment process but had been advised on multiple occasions, both verbally and in writing, by TAFE NSW that she was not permitted to do so. “

  10. Yes to all of this:
“Australian universities need fixing, not just a funding boost. The sector is engulfed in scandals, from excessive pay for management, to wage underpayments, to huge spending on things like consultants, travel and advertising.

These issues don’t just come from underfunding; they stem from how universities are structured and regulated. Most importantly, the management of universities needs to become accountable to students, staff and the public at large. Without fixing the sector’s governance issues, additional public money is at risk of being mismanaged, undermining the public confidence necessary to maintain higher levels of public funding.”

  15. “In a statement, Adelaide University said "there are some changes to most degrees from what is currently offered at the foundation universities".
"This may be reflected across contents, delivery and details in program naming, which have all been designed to optimally meet the needs of industry and future employers," a spokesperson for the university said.” (Source ABC)

Well, there’s your problem right off there. A university where course are optimised to ‘the needs of industry and future employers’. Effectively assigning a ‘saussage factory’ tag to #SA #University. This reflects the preposterous idea that Tertiary institutions are neo-liberal economic engines. They ought not to be. Universities must be — by virtue of their preeminent educational value — places of learning, discussions and discovery no matter whether employers find the fields of study appropriate to their rapacious needs.

  16. Is there anything else required to convince everyone that the issue and the problems with ANU’s alleged financial troubles is anything but financial trouble?

Squarely, this misapprehension is a direct result of #Mismanagement and #AccrualAccounting neither of which ought to be experienced by an education institution.

Time for the #Education #Minister Jason Clare to dismiss the council outright and implement the recommended fixes that were commended to him Including scrapping the #JobReadyGraduate #Morrison crap!

“If we believe the auditor, there is no crisis at the ANU. To be clear, as a government owned, not-for-profit entity, the ANU is under no pressure to maximise its profits so that it can maximise dividends paid to shareholders. On the contrary, when the ANU made a surplus of $89.9 million in 2024 it did so by spending less money on its students, staff and community than it received.” (Source: The Australian Institute)

  17. TIL: the ANU is awash with #CASH:
“But here is the paradox: while education and staffing were cut, ANU’s financial wealth kept growing. By 2023, the university held over $2B in financial assets and recorded $3.4B in total net assets. It continued to run cash surpluses despite reporting accrual accounting deficits”

AND that the financial crisis making the news and resulting in over 450 staff losses and plans to close some faculties are a direct result of the application of accrual accounting. This is an accounting practice that is necessary to run a business responsible to shareholders — but CANNOT be applied to education institutions which have a different raison d’etre and report to society (via parliaments).

#Managerialism and #NeoClassicEconomics responsible for the #FailedGovernance of ANU is made worse by the #Council’s use of ANU funds in speculative and #RealEstate investments partly funded by borrowings (Debt). These #NeoLiberal Council forays in #Productivism and #Capitalism are NOT core business to Universities. Not only is this the Absolutely Wrong Governance model to run a Uni, but it is currently grossly #Mismanaged and noone is taking responsibility for this, least of all #JulieBishop the #Chancellor of ANU.

Take a break and read the article, it is well written and explains much of what is going on. Furthermore, it provides the reasons why #Bishop should go and a sorely needed change to #Governance processes and responsibilities. If #JasonClaiMP can’t see this he’s a #FailedMinister

All of these problems are a direct result of the application of commercial and economic ‘growth’ theories which are so far removed from the core function of universities that I find it unimaginable that it is the dominant raison-d’etre and item on the agendum of university governance throughout Australia.

It is incomprehensible to me that economic productivism has been allowed to usurp the power from academia. This is truly an abomination. University governance ought to be subordinate to education outcomes not to managerialism and economic competition.

  19. Boeing CEO, as he plans to fire 17000 people, 10% of the workforce:

We need “to reset our workforce levels to align with our financial reality and to a more focused set of priorities”

Will these priorities include safety assurance, quality control and engineering excellence?

  20. @interfluidity

Wow. Yes. I thought it was just me. Today I was 'blessed' by much 'managerialism'. Great word BTW.

    #managerialism

  21. @lymphomation You seem to presume that pharma managers serve the shareholders? (I wouldn't have expected you to spout this neoliberal propaganda on here, Karl! 😉 ) What if they are serving the interests of #managerialism itself?

  22. This seems relevant to the recent discussion we had here about the firing of Dr Mike Joy and the problem of managerialism in our universities:

    npr.org/2013/09/22/224946206/a

So sad. Hopefully it sparks an open revolt against treating tertiary faculty like seasonal fruit pickers.

  23. @LordWoolamaloo During a couple of decades of dealing with those in charge of funding the arts in Scotland I was surprised, saddened, and angered by how mediocre they were.
    And, indeed, are.
They conserve consultants and administrators, not artists. The curse of #managerialism is everywhere. We deserve better. A stipend for artists for a start; let the Administrati deal with perpetual financial uncertainty instead.

  24. Good read on what #Longtermism is & why its adoption by #Musk, Jack, thiel, and yes, Putin presents a present day geopolitical danger. #SpaceX has a role.

    aeon.co/essays/why-longtermism

This directly intersects w/ #Managerialism (which Putin has accepted as a means to thwart #Democracy.)
Billionaire plutocrats like these ideologies bc it’s a countering approach to the control & regulations #democracies put on big corporations & the super rich.

  25. ‘[Alasdair] MacIntyre … identified #scholarship, alongside #chess, #medicine, #science, #painting and #football, as potential, although fragile, respites from #consumerism, #managerialism, and the aimlessness of the #liberal world’. – Samuel McIlhagga, jacobin.com/2022/11/alasdair-m

I guess the key word here is ‘potential’.

    @academicchatter

  26. Yeah, I’m just gonna keep RTing, reboosting that post about Elon’s #managerialism and his sabotage of the US dollar, til people start to connect the dots.
If I find that podcast with Dave Troy and authoritarian expert Ruth Ben-Ghiat talking about it, I’ll post it. #twitter

  27. @Armando see more of Troy’s pieces. There’s intersection w/ he, Jack and Putin’s vision of #managerialism and the concept of the #Noosphere.
    It’s complicated but intersects.
May take a few readings for it to sink in. Not a put down, I’m saying I had to read it a few times to get the connections. It is indeed complicated.

  28. So I joined in May & failed to bring people with me from Twatter, so didn’t write an #introduction. Let’s try & do that properly now everyone is coming 😉 I trained as a #composer & first worked for Sibelius/Avid in #music #technology tech support then product management (9 1/2 yrs). Then I discovered I loved music #teaching & spent 12 years in classroom #musiceducation. In 2013 I finished my PhD & moved to Sydney Conservatorium (Sydney #university ) where I’ve been composing, moving into #hiphop production, teaching, & researching ever since. I love it (& my students) very much but the state of #neoliberal #managerialism in universities makes me very sad so I’ve got active with the #NTEU. Here on Mastodon I hope to share ideas with music teachers, researchers, philosophers & creatives, but I will slip into politics & cricket from time to time so sorry about that.
