  1. Going Bananas: we’re seeing a lot of this fabulous ingredient around this season

Whether blending them, putting them into baked goods, or chopping them into cereals or salads, bananas are one of the most versatile and nutrient-packed fruits. So nutritious, it’s become a popular ingredient in beauty products.

Bananas are an all-star choice when it comes to more wholesome foods to your diet. They’re chock full of potassium, magnesium, fibre, and vitamins (mainly B6 and C).

Bananas help keep your bones healthy, reduce the risk of heart disease, help regulate blood pressure, and boost energy and cognition. In beauty products you’ll find banana is a helpful ingredient in face creams, like in Tano Skincare‘s Age Well Face Cream, and even Garnier is using the good stuff in its Vitamin C Eye Cream (see below).

In haircare, banana is also a popular ingredient choice since its richness in potassium helps improve hair elasticity and synthesise collagen, leading to less breakage and stronger locks. Here’s a bunch of great things that are currently making us go, well, bananas.

Compiled by Lisa Andrews & Antonino Tati

Garnier Vitamin C Brightening Eye Cream

Garnier proudly insists that this is the world’s first eye cream that is highly concentrated with 4% – a patented figure that refers to the amount of niacinamide, caffeine, vitamin C and banana powder combined, found in every tube. The banana component helps to lighten dark circles and improve overall skin tone, while the caffeine factor helps improve puffiness. In one week we found a certain smoothness and overall better appearance in skin complexion. By week four, we were all in with highly visible results. Available from popular beauty outlets, and at garnier.com.au. RRP 29.99 for 15ml tube.

    The Body Shop Banana Range

A brand that knows a good natural ingredient when it sees and tries it, The Body Shop have a full range of banana infused beauty products including Banana Smooth & Shine Shampoo, Conditioner, and Hair Mask. The fully vegan products are perfect for taming frizzy hair, since the banana component helps flatten the hair cuticles, preventing flyaways or rough textures. Bananas are rich in natural oils and water content, which also works to quench those dry strands that can lead to frizz. Product prices vary, available from thebodyshop.com.au.

    Lush Banoffee Pie Body Spray

Notes of banana are wrapped in a gooey base of vanilla and silken tonka glaze in this body spray from the fresh food-as-beauty folk at Lush. The key ingredient keeping it all together is labdanum resinoid, a rich and resinous formula that adds to the sweetness. Surprisingly, too, the scent is tropical but the sensation on the skin isn’t sticky. Store your body spray somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight between uses. Available from lush.com/au RRP $58.00 for 200ml bottle.

    Maxibon Barney Banana Ice Cream

We know it might surprise you to see an ice cream in this mix of beauty products but since the calcium from milk and the minerals in bananas are all great for bone health, a Barney Banana ice cream as a treat makes perfect sense.

You might recall this fabulous treat growing up. In fact, Barney Banana ice cream originally hit shop freezers in 1958 but it was Peters who put the ice cream on a popstick, originally promoting it as having real banana pieces.

The popstick is gone since with Maxibon – you just don’t need it! The rebooted Barney Banana features a banana-flavoured slab sandwiched between two chocolate biscuits then dipped in chocolate and delicious cookie pieces. Available at major supermarkets such as Woolworths, RRP $11.50 for a four-pack.

The Velvet Underground & Nico Banana Enamel Pin

Why should Charli XCX have all the Velvet Underground fun? This here enamel pin says rock’n’roll’n’style all in one. Made of enamel on alloy, features a polished black metal outline, bright yellow enamel fill, and with sturdy rubber pinback. Size: around 2.8cm x 3.6cm. Available from The Pop Shop, RRP $22.

Bananarama – 40 Year Anniversary of their brill album True Confessions

It’s hard to believe that 40 years ago we were dancing in clubs and loungerooms to Bananarama’s boppy version of Venus, which featured on this here album. Bananarama released their third studio LP True Confessions amid the peak of their global popularity. The album would go on to be their most commercially successful record worldwide and, aside from Venus, it housed excellent tracks like More Than Physical, Do Not Disturb, and the cool, laidback Trick Of The Night. Various new versions of the album have recently been reissued through London Records including a double vinyl set – the second record featuring remixes of Venus and More Than Physical from the cheeky likes of Richard X, Boys Noize, and Luke Mornay. In fact, five of the remixes appear here exclusively on vinyl and for the first time. Score! Available from local record stores as well as at store.bananarama.co.uk.

Dusk X Paddle Pop Banana Scented Candles

Speaking of retro memories, Dusk is yet again collaborating with Streets to create a range of Paddle Pop Banana Scented products. These include the large and small soy blend candles, pictured. The scent is very banana meets vanilla cream, and its nice and subtle – not too strong when you have to concentrate in the home office, burning the candle at both ends, so to speak.

  2. That Magical Ingredient: haircare that delivers excellent results thanks to key natural ingredients

Natural ingredients and quality haircare have always gone hand in hand. Even in the ancient days when Cleopatra was being pampered, she’d insist on magical ingredients such as honey, aloe vera, almond and olive oils, to keep her long locks in check. Here, Cream selects some quality products on the market and highlights ‘that magical ingredient’ in each.

Revlon Professional’s UniqOne Green Tea Leave-In Hair Treatment

At the heart of this treatment is the refreshing botanical ingredient of green tea, which brings a nourishing, revitalising touch to a clever all-in-one formula. Designed to deliver 10 hair benefits in a single spritz, UniqOne helps moisturise, detangle, smooth frizz, add shine and body, prevent split ends and protect colour, all while helping damaged hair feel softer and more manageable. We tried it on wet and dry hair, and it works wonders either way. An easy addition to any daily routine – particularly when your locks are behaving more like a tangled mess than a salon-worthy mane.
THAT MAGIC INGREDIENT: The green tea focus gives the treatment its wonderfully fresh personality. A fragrant blend of green tea, along with lavender, zesty lemon, bergamot and mandarin creates an aromatic citrusy mist that feels as refreshing as it smells. Simply spray onto wet hair, comb through and style as usual, or apply a little to your palms before working through dry hair for a quick touch-up.
COST: Varies store to store and site to site but around $14.
AVAILABLE FROM: Quality haircare outlets and revlonprofessional.com.

    Revlon Professional Re/Start Hydration Range

It’s no surprise Revlon have chosen to play on the ‘Re’ prefix for this very, very good haircare trio: hair is left reinvigorated, revived and feeling refreshed. In fact, when your hair is thirsty, frizzy and feeling more like straw than silky, these products provide a great three-step hydrating/moisture rescue. The Moisture Micellar Shampoo, Moisture Melting Conditioner and Anti-Frizz Moisturising Drops are designed to lock hydration into the hair fibre while leaving strands softer, smoother and easier to manage. All easy to use with no fuss or too many frills.
THAT MAGIC INGREDIENT: The star ingredient across all three products is betaine – a naturally occurring plant-derived compound best known for helping maintain moisture balance. In haircare, that makes it particularly useful since betaine helps retain water within each hair fibre, leading to softness, flexibility and better manageability. Revlon also reckons betaine can help improve hair strength, and who are we to argue? Use the shampoo to cleanse and hydrate, follow with the melting conditioner to smooth and detangle, then finish with a couple of drops through wet or dry lengths to tame frizz and boost shine. You’ll be happier with hydrated hair that feels softer, looks healthier and behaves itself considerably better.
COST: Varies store to store and site to site.
AVAILABLE FROM: Quality haircare outlets and revlonprofessional.com.

    American Crew 3-in-1 Tea Tree

This is a great one for men who prefer a simpler haircare routine. Why clutter the shower when one bottle can do the lot? American Crew’s 3-in-1 Tea Tree Shampoo, Conditioner & Body Wash is the ultimate streamlined grooming multi-tasker, cleansing hair and skin while leaving both feeling fresh, soft and clean. It’s way easy to use, too: Simply massage into wet hair and body, rinse and get on with your day. It’s uncomplicated, efficient and very fresh – exactly what a three-in-one should be. And even if you usually stick to a stricter regime with an alternative brand, this product is great to have on standby on those rushed mornings.
THAT MAGIC INGREDIENT: Who isn’t familiar with the benefit’s of tea tree oil? This natural botanical ingredient is renowned for its cleansing, refreshing and invigorating properties. In haircare, tea tree is particularly appealing for oily scalps, helping create a brilliantly clean, fresh-from-the-shower feeling, while its naturally aromatic character gives the formula a distinctive cooling sensation and of course a fresh fragrance. American Crew specifically highlights the tea tree oil for its invigorating, refreshing effect. Their formula also helps wash away excess oil while leaving hair clean, conditioned, shiny and soft.
COST: Varies store to store and site to site.
AVAILABLE FROM: Quality haircare outlets; for more information visit americancrew.com.

Straand Crown Cleanse Shampoo and Boost Conditioning Treatment

Australian haircare brand Straand is innovative in that it takes a skin-first approach to haircare, concentrating on the scalp as the foundation for healthier results. We recently tested the Crown Cleanse Shampoo and Boost Conditioning Treatment which worked well in helping with dryness or oiliness, making the scalp more neutral and feeling well-soothed.

THOSE MAGIC INGREDIENTS: The two secret ingredients here are peppermint and rosemary in the shampoo, which leave the scalp feeling fresh, while the conditioner – containing almond and jojoba – helps put moisture back into hair, leaving it soft and ready to style.

    COST: Varies product to product.
AVAILABLE FROM: Priceline stores nationwide, or for or directly through straand.com.au.

    My.Organics Thickening Shampoo & Conditioner

Our editor swears by this brand and particularly these two products. Where a few years ago, things were getting a little fine on top of head, since using My.Organics thickening products, the locks are looking fuller and healthier. Indeed, fine hair need never mean flat hair. My.Organics Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner create a botanical two-step designed to cleanse, nourish and give finer strands a fuller, healthier-looking finish.
THOSE MAGICAL INGREDIENTS: There are various pairings available in the My.Organics range, depending on what result you’re after but here, the Orange & Lemon Thickening Shampoo brings an invigorating hit of citrus essential oils. Rich in antioxidants, orange helps promote shine and freshness, while lemon has purifying properties and can help balance excess oils on the scalp. Together, they give hair and scalp a wonderfully clean start, while fenugreek and peppermint add to the formula’s strengthening and refreshing credentials. Then comes the Mango & Rose Thickening Conditioner, where the emphasis shifts from refreshing to nourishing. Mango is rich in vitamins A, C and E and fatty acids, helping moisturise and soften hair while enhancing shine and strength. Rose brings soothing, hydrating and antioxidant properties, helping leave strands feeling perfectly conditioned and revitalised.
COST: Varies store to store and site to site.
AVAILABLE FROM: Quality haircare outlets and pharmacies including Chemist Warehouse.

Pure Elements Organics Thyme & Clary Sea Salt Spray

This reputable brand offers a range of haircare products that truly live up to their organics name. All products are vegan and organic certified, with a minimum of 985 of total ingredients coming from a natural origin, all packed in 100% post-consumer recycled bottles. But to the highlighted product itself? This salt spray is genius, delivering beach-textured waves, sun-kissed body, and added volume to fine, lifeless, or lank curls without a heavy or overly stiff leftover feel.

THOSE MAGICAL INGREDIENTS: Thyme, Clary, and Geranium all assist in the balancing and normalising of the hair and scalp, while Aloe Vera helps to calm and moisturise.

COST: RRP $47, 200ml spray bottle.
AVAILABLE FROM: Quality beauty and haircare sites such smithscollectivebrands.com.au.

OTHER EXCELLENT NATURAL INGREDIENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN HAIRCARE PRODUCTS:

Aloe vera – Used in ancient Egyptian medicine and cosmetics, aloe was valued for its soothing and moisturising qualities. It would have been particularly useful for skin exposed to Egypt’s intense sun and dry climate, and similarly is very good in helping to manage hair in today’s climate-changing environments.
Almond oil – Used as a nourishing oil for skin and hair, helps soften and condition.
Licorice root – Helps improve hair and scalp health by soothing irritation, reducing dandruff and basically assisting well in hair growth.
Honey – A prized ingredient with moisturising and antimicrobial properties, honey was used medicinally and in preparations for the skin, and also occasionally in hair. It’s great because it attracts and binds moisture from the air into the hair shafts, helping with long-lasting hydration.

Milk – The famous story of Cleopatra bathing in donkey’s milk has become part of her legend. Milk is good for hair because it provides essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals that nourish follicles and soften dry strands.
Moringa oil – Great for hair because it deeply moisturises the scalp, strengthens strands, and adds a natural shine without weighing hair down.

  3. A glorious book about colour in, yes, glorious colour

If you’re like us, you love it whenever you discover a glorious new shade of Pantone colour. And we love good book that combines art, history, science, and a healthy dose of weirdness. Which is just what The Mystery of Colour and How We Solved It does, published by Thames & Hudson and written by colour expert David Coles.

The book, illustrated beautifully by Margaux Samson-Abadie, takes readers young and old on a vibrant trip through history to discover how humans learned to capture the colours of the natural world.

Royal purples, brilliant blues, glittering greens and punchy reds were once precious commodities, extracted from everything from minerals and plants to crushed beetles, burnt bones and sea snails. Indeed, the fact that colour was once made from crushed insects, burnt bones and sea snails gives it plenty of personality beyond being simply a pretty book!

Ever wondered where your favourite colour actually came from? Before the modern paint aisle and the Pantone wheel offered every shade imaginable, artists had to get seriously inventive – and occasionally rather gruesome – to create their palettes.

The book brings together curious historical stories, scientific discoveries and iconic artworks to reveal how colour has shaped the way we see – and make – the world.

It’s the sort of book that manages to be educational without ever feeling like homework. Expect plenty of “Really? They made that colour from what?” moments alongside a fascinating look at the ingenuity behind the pigments we now take for granted.

A gorgeous introduction to art, science and history, The Mystery of Colour and How Solved It should appeal to curious kids, budding artists and adults who still like discovering that something as everyday as a tube of paint has a rather extraordinary backstory.

  5. 5 Good Reasons to pay respect to the OG Krispy Kreme Doughnut

Look at the image above, will you? The details. The crispiness of that outer shell. The softness of the inside. it’s like a work of art and I think it’d look great on the office wall. If you haven’t figured out what it is yet, it’s detail of a Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut being pulled apart. Noms.

The OG has been seducing sweet-toothed humans for decades, and frankly, it doesn’t need a birthday promotion to remind us why – although recently (last Thursday), New Zealand the 23rd birthday of Krispy Kreme in that country, and customers got to enjoy free OG doughnuts. Generous much?

Here are five reasons this iconic ring continues to rule.

    01. That glaze
It’s not just icing. It’s that impossibly thin, glossy coating that cracks ever so slightly between your teeth before disappearing into sugary bliss. Messy? Sometimes. Worth it? Absolutely.

    02. It’s ridiculously light
Some doughnuts require serious commitment. The Original Glazed practically floats. Soft, pillowy and gloriously airy, it has somehow mastered the art of being indulgent without feeling like you’ve eaten a brick.

    03. Warm OGs are another level
Catch one fresh and warm and you’ll understand the fuss. That melt-in-your-mouth texture goes into overdrive, making it almost impossible to stop at one.

    04. It doesn’t overcomplicate things
No salted caramel, cookie crumbs, extravagant fillings or edible glitter (although we quite like some of these toppings on occasion). Here, it’s just good dough, good glaze and a very good idea.

    05. It’s an OG for a reason
Trends come and go, but the Original Glazed has remained Krispy Kreme’s signature for generations. Sometimes the simplest thing on the menu is the thing you keep coming back to.

  7. Aussie brand Straand take a stand against unhealthy hair

Australian haircare brand Straand takes a refreshingly skin-first approach to hair, concentrating on the scalp as the foundation for healthier-looking locks. Its formulas are designed around the scalp microbiome, with a focus on hydration, balance and keeping irritation and flakes under control. The result is haircare that feels a little more considered than simply shampoo, condition and hope for the best.

The Scalp Care Starter Kit (pictured above) is an excellent introduction to the brand, bringing together the Crown Cleanse Shampoo, Crown Boost Conditioning Treatment and Crown Fix Scalp Serum. It’s a straightforward three-step ritual designed to cleanse, nourish and protect, and is particularly appealing if your scalp tends towards dryness, oiliness or irritation.

The peppermint-and-rosemary-infused cleanse leaves the scalp feeling fresh, while the conditioner puts softness and moisture back into hair. The kit is also a clever way to trial the system without committing to a full-sized arsenal.

The Crown Cleanse Shampoo is the true workhorse here: a sulfate-free formula containing salicylic acid to help tackle buildup and flakes, alongside hydrating ingredients and oils. It gives that satisfying clean-scalp feeling without the aggressively stripped sensation some clarifying shampoos can leave behind.

Then there’s The Crown Fix Scalp Serum, arguably the standout. Lightweight, fragrance-free and fast-absorbing, it is applied directly to the scalp and left in, helping soothe itchiness and dryness while supporting the scalp barrier. It disappears without greasy residue, which is a bonus.

My verdict: Straand is a welcome addition to my haircare regime; it makes scalp care feel less like a chore and more like a beauty ritual proper. A smart choice for anyone wanting healthier roots, calmer skin on their head, and of course hair that feels noticeably better.

  8. Matcha do about everything: the delicious mix of matcha and strawberry in a new Connoisseur ice cream

It’s funny how it takes quite a while for outside cultures to catch up with the goodness of things that are otherwise common in certain countries they’ve hailed from. Like the goodness of pistachio – which has forever been a healthy favourite in Italy. Or the goodness of turmeric which is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Of course, matcha comes under this category, too, and that’s a really strange one to have taken so long to cross cultures – since it has been a staple in Chinese culture for centuries, its roots tracing back to the Tang Dynasty, where tea leaves were steamed and pressed into blocks for storage and trade.

Today, all across the world, matcha has found itself in products as diverse as chocolate and tea, baked goods and savory dishes, salad dressings and roast rubs, latte coffees and ice cream. In that latter category comes a new, delicious product that sees matcha matched with another favourite ingredient – strawberries.

Connoisseur have released a Strawberry Matcha ice cream on a stick and its a combination made in creamy heaven. Green tea leaves have been harvested and ground into a vibrant matcha powder then folded through quality ice cream which is then swirled with strawberry syrup.

This is then coated with a crispy strawberry-flavoured pink chocolate shell, allowing for every bite to burst with a good balance of the earthiness of the matcha and the sweetness of the strawberry.

Matcha will keep being a hero ingredient in products right across the grocery aisles, but I’ve got to say so far, this strawberry and matcha match has been one of my favourites.

And while you’re enjoying this decadent ice cream, you can smile at how good it is for you. The matcha alone is nutrient-dense, providing high levels of antioxidants, supporting brain function, and calming focus.

  9. Pure Elements: haircare products that are pure in name and nature

Consider the elements of nature: sun, salt, wind, soil and we love how they remind us of the awesomeness of nature, but there’s also a bit of a bad side to them when it comes to the damage they can do to your hair.

Enter Pure Elements, the brand pitching a botanical fix with its Patchouli Softening Shampoo and Poppy Seed Detangling Cream. The shampoo delivers a gentle cleanse that doesn’t strip your strands into straw, and the patchouli isn’t just a hippy vibe – it’s actually an excellent ingredient that leaves your hair feeling supple, like it’s been coaxed back from the brink rather than blasted clean.

Then comes the Poppy Seed Detangling Cream, the quiet overachiever, pictured at the top of this article. It glides through knots with minimal drama, smoothing frazzled ends and adding a soft, touchable finish without the dreaded silicone slick.

Together, these products don’t just mask environmental damage, they actively soften its impact, restoring manageability and shine.

Are they miracle workers? Not quite. But as a daily defence against the elements, this duo feels considered, calming, and genuinely effective.

For sun and sea damage in particular, Pure Elements also offer a Thyme & Clary Saltwater Spray, a product that gives your hair a taste of ocean texture and a wavy sun-kissed look. Designed to provide your hair with exceptional texture, and containing 100% pure essential oils of Thyme, Clary and Geranium, the spray also helps balance and normalise the hair and scalp. Add to this trusted ingredient of Aloe Vera and hair is left calmed and moisturised, while Hydrolysed Wheat Protein and Silk Amino Acids strengthen and smooth.

These are just three products in a range from a brand that keeps growing as our haircare needs do.

In sum, Pure Elements is a sustainable, clean, fresh approach to therapies for hair that works in harmony with science and nature. Certified 100% vegan and cruelty-free to boot!

  11. The Mushroom and The Flower: How kids’ picture books often relay messages and morals that adults ought to heed

Coffee table books are great for when friends visit and you’re not quite ready to entertain them, halfway through getting dressed, or what not. While they wait for you to get your act together, they can flip through a pretty book that’s sitting on the table. But, seriously, how much are they going to soak in, in the span of eight minutes?

The Mushroom and the Flower is a cute book that can be flipped through and absorbed within a few minutes, featuring gloriously neon illustrations juxtaposed with rustic, neutral hues, and containing a story that surprisingly questions the value of vanity. Sure, it’s a children’s book, really, but the message applies to adults, too, asking if we can learn to share the spotlight with new additions to our social circle.

Like many of the best picture books, its lesson becomes more meaningful as you’ve lived a little longer. It’s why we love to recall (and can still relate to) classics such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

The premise is wonderfully simple: a bright pink mushroom enjoys being the centre of attention and is proud of being unique. When a flower begins growing beside her, she has to decide whether someone else’s beauty diminishes her own or if they can both flourish together. The author, Sally Soweol Han, describes it as a story about “giving friendship time to bloom” and learning to share the spotlight. For children, that’s a lesson about sharing and making friends. For adults, it touches on several deeper truths: that another person’s success doesn’t erase your own; that identity doesn’t have to depend on being overly “special”, and the bottom line that real friendship begins when competition and one-upmanship ends.

Once we stop measuring ourselves against others, we’re free to appreciate them. That’s true in workplaces, families, creative communities, and relationships just as much as on a forest floor.

Reviewers have consistently noted that the colorful books by Soweol Han speak to readers of all ages, despite their simplicity. The Mushroom and the Flower brightly carries on that tradition.

  12. THE CREAM WINTER ESSENTIALS GUIDE 2026

The days look like getting shorter, the darkness setting in earliler, but winter needn’t mean dullness and dreariness this year. Our bumper winter essentials guide will see you through the chillier months, and includes cosy home and interior items, cool (but warm!) fashion statements, and a ton of beauty and wellbeing products to ensure that hibernation doesn’t lead to hedonism and instead to better and brighter health. Pour yourself a hot cuppa, snuggle up on the sofa, and read on.

Guide compiled by Lisa Andrews and Antonino Tati.

↑ WHAT: Ugg Boots. DESCRIPTION: What better must-have item to kick off a winter themed guide than a trusty pair of Ugg boots! Winter just wouldn’t be winter in Australia if you didn’t have a pair of Uggies in the wardrobe. Indeed, Australia has gifted the world with several fashionable items but one of the most sartorial gifts of all would have to be the Ugg – made of quality sheepskin, of course.

We ourselves have been wearing Uggies around the office since ‘Wear Your Uggs Day’ took place on the first of last month – because they’re that cosy and comfortable. And Ugg boots today aren’t your generic kind – there are plenty of styles to suit the fashionista in every Aussie, such as the Australian Shepherd Ugg Slippers (Daley), pictured left (RRP $99.00) which provide the ultimate in comfort for chilly mornings and frosty nights thanks to an incredibly soft inner lining. They look beaut for out-of-the-house wear, too, teamed with a pair of blue jeans and puffer jacket. Or for him, dress up the everyday outfit with a pair of black leather Chelsea casuals (Dralen style) which are crafted from premium Australian cowhide, pictured right (RRP $159.00).

Ugg boots have become a symbol of comfort, tradition and Australian identity worn by all generations. We’ll be sticking to traditions, style and comfort this season, that’s for sure. RRP: Prices vary, see examples above. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality footwear outlets and direct through uggexpress.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Ōura Ring 5. DESCRIPTION: Truly smart folks have already swapped their comparatively bulky Fitbits or smart watches for something even more discreet, more thorough, and certainly more stylish – the Ōura ring. Now there is an even slimmer, more compact and very stylish ring added to prestigious the collection: the Ōura Ring 5, dubbed the world’s smallest smart ring. The ring is noticeably slimmer and lighter on your finger and sits nicely amid other jewellery you may wear on your hand.

But just because it’s smaller doesn’t mean function has been sacrificed. In fact, a rebuilt sensor system provides more accurate tracking than before. And if you intend on wearing it on the track or at the gym, fear not for its tough titanium exterior is scratch-resistant, and the battery life is reliably long (get one week on a single charge!). We’ll be featuring the new, slimmer Ōura in our pages in the coming fortnight suffice to say that we’re happy just showing it off for now. And it looks simply beautiful next to our favourite Cartier. RRP: $799.00 for gold ring, pictured left. Available in various sizes and finishes including silver, brushed silver, black, and deep rose. AVAILABLE FROM: ouraring.com.

↑ WHAT: Crosley Voyager Bluetooth Record Player / Turntable. DESCRIPTION: There’s something irresistibly nostalgic about dropping a needle on a vinyl record, and the Crosley Voyager takes that retro vibe to the next level. Compact, suitcase-cute and portable, it’s built for bedrooms and cosy living rooms, but can also be taken to the next picnic or beach trip (when summer hits, of course). The three-speed belt-drive keeps your crate digging flexible, while Bluetooth in and out means you can stream or go fully wireless to play on bigger speakers when the mood escalates.

Fun fact: a ‘record player’ is a machine with built in speaker which you can plug in and instantly play; a ‘turntable’ can be played through an amplifier, mixer, or thrown via Bluetooth to alt speakers. The Crosley is both.

Sound-wise, the built-in stereo speakers are modest but warm—perfect for casual spins rather than audiophile deep dives. The cueing lever and RCA output add a welcome touch of control. Playful, stylish, and just the right amount of retro-romantic. RRP: $199.00. AVAILABLE FROM: West Coast Hi-Fi, Temple & Webster, David Jones, Harvey Norman and other select outlets. Note, limited colours available at each outlet, and even in patterns at some, such as the floral print, pictured left, from West Coast Hi-Fi.

↑ WHAT: Withings Body Scan / Scale Connected Health Station. DESCRIPTION: Remember those clumpy weighing scales you used to step on which would always be two or three kilos out of whack, keeping you wondering why the diet just wasn’t working? Well those have been replaced by digital devices that are more precise than analogue scales ever were. And you don’t get more precise than the Withings Body Scan Connected Health Station which, in fact, isn’t just a scale, but a revolutionary at-home health hub. Sleek and deceptively minimal, the Withings delivers a deep dive into your body’s story, from segmental composition to cardiovascular insights and nerve health. It’s the kind of data-rich experience that feels more clinic than bathroom, yet remains beautifully intuitive and intimate in detail.

During winter, when routines slip and movement dips, staying across your health statistics becomes essential.

The Body Scan offers gentle accountability – tracking changes that the colder months can quietly amplify, from weight fluctuations to circulation. This handsomely designed device doesn’t just measure you, it motivates you – subtly, smartly, and with a distinctly modern sense of care. Hop on, then, because the Withings also doesn’t judge. RRP: $799.00. AVAILABLE FROM: Trusted outlets including FitTrack, Officeworks, and The Good Guys.

↑ WHAT: Midea 3 Benchtop Mini Dishwasher Plus. DESCRIPTION: In winter, you dine in more, so the dishes tend to stack up. The solution? A mini dishwasher to clean up as you go! The Medea 3 Plus is a cute yet powerful addition to any sized kitchen, delivering high-quality clean in a compact, portable design. It can even keep the dishes clean on holidays and road trips thanks to its built-in 5L water tank. Intuitive touch-screen controls allow for effortless everyday use. To top it off, a fan drying system and automatic door opening at the end each cycle ensures improved airflow, convenience, accessibility, and most importantly, better hygiene. RRP: $239.00. AVAILABLE FROM: Bing Lee (online and in-store), Electrical Discounters (in-store). For more information, visit midea.com/au.

↑ WHAT: Jean Paul Gaultier’s Scandal. DESCRIPTION: In cold weather, fragrances evaporate slower, thereby muting light scents. With this in mind, the best winter notes that provide depth and warmth, such as sandalwood and oud, are best at being muted. You’ll find both these notes in Jean Paul Gaultier’s Scandal fragrances, both for women (Scandal Absolute), and men (Scandal Pour Homme). The heavier notes thrive in the chill, ultimately projecting an inviting scent trail. RRP: $215.00 for Scandal Pour Homme Le Parfum, pictured above. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality fragrance outlets including Myer and David Jones.

↑ WHAT: MONDO by Defunc Headphones. DESCRIPTION: These on-ear freestyle headphones are easily paired to your listening device via Bluetooth and they truly are a symphony of Swedish sound engineering and cool retro style. When fully charged, they offer up to 22 hours of playtime, and boast a rich sound experience and plenty of hands-on functionality.

Easily rotating controls on each side put the power of sound at your fingertips, where you can change volume, skip tracks or go back to favourite ones.

For a fully customised listening experience, you just need to download the MONDO app, where you can adjust your EQ settings to personalise your listening experience. I like my audio with Dolby Atmos on, and let me tell you, the mind-trip these headphones take me on is one well worth writing home about, with the ‘phones delivering deep bass and brilliant reverb where needed. So compact and light, too, you’ll forget you’re wearing them. RRP: $99.00. AVAILABLE FROM: mondobydefunc.com.au.

↑ WHAT: A warm and cosy duvet that makes a cool statement. DESCRIPTION: Four good reasons why you’ll want a good duvet this winter. (01.) It traps body heat efficiently, creating a warm and insulated cocoon-like sleep. (02.) Unlike lighter blankets, a duvet distributes warmth evenly across your body, helping you stay comfortable even on the coldest nights. (03.) A consistent temperature overnight reduces tossing and turning, so you’re less likely to wake up from the cold. And (04.) You can change your duvet design to suit any bedroom. If you’re a film buff, the film poster print design, pictured, would be a dandy winter addition. Or something more subtle like the duvet, left, might do you good. With most duvets having a removable cover, they’re simple to clean and to switch seasonally, making them a practical and cosy winter essential. RRP: $158.00 (Queen), $169 (King). AVAILABLE FROM: This particualr design from redbubble.com.au.

↑ WHAT: The Beauty Chef’s Antioxidant Boost. DESCRIPTION: You can maintain energy with your power drinks, increase your electrolytes with your Hydralyte ices, and hope for just enough caffeine in your matcha tea to top up the body’s amino acids. But for a true boost to the immune system and something to really provide skin health, crack open a bottle of The Beauty Chef’s Antioxidant Boost. This ruby-hued elixir contains a hefty blend of bio-fermented berries and skin-loving botanicals that feels equal parts wellness tonic and beauty flex. It’s tart, earthy, and even tastes unmistakably good for you. This is the kind of drink that signals you’ve graduated from sugary shortcuts to something more intentional – and much more sustainable in these heavy-with-the-hibernating winter months. Several weeks into drinking this product and it’s like your mind has cleared, skin has exhaled, and tummy has just gotten a good comforting rub. RRP: $49.00 for 500ml bottle. AVAILABLE FROM: thebeautychef.com.

↑ WHAT: ‘The Cream’ and ‘The Eye Cream’ from Truff’elle Australia. DESCRIPTION: Recently, Cream was invited to partake in a truffle hunt in Manjimup, WA. Guided by Blue Heelers, you get to track down where truffles are at in the mud, and get to pick them fresh. Yep, it’s a thing. In a timely manner, we’ve also discovered that truffles make a great ingredient in beauty products, such as those created by Truff’elle Australia (See? It’s even in their name). Rich in vitamins B, C, D and E, as well as powerful natural antioxidants and amino acids, the confidently titled ‘The Cream’, and its partner in rhyme ‘The Eye Cream’ both help boost collagen, help firm skin, and leave the face and all-important eye area feeling firmer and looking more radiant. For best results, use both products morning and night. And don’t assume there’s going to be a funky fungi-like scent. Indeed, we’ve not sensed a more delicious aroma in beauty products than the scent of these Truff’elle creams. RRP: $570.00 for both products, representing the brand’s ‘Black Diamond Duo’. AVAILABLE FROM: truffelleaustralia.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Medik8 H.E.O. Mask Duo. DESCRIPTION: We love Medik8 products for the way they lean into skincare science without losing their indulgent, end-of-day ritual feels. And using this Medik8 H.E.O. Mask duo makes staying in for the night that much more special. Split into two steps (humectants first, emollients and occlusives to seal), both products are easy to apply as the last steps to your nightly skincare regime. The textures are plush but purposeful, and you’ll find you’ve woken up to results somewhere between subtle and striking: skin looks cushioned, calmer, convincingly restored rather than artificially glazed. These products are less about instant glow theatrics, and more about long-term resilience. RRP: $119.00 for both products, each 50ml. AVAILABLE FROM: medik8.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Omorfi Hydrating Hyaluronic 1% Serum and Skin Correcting Niacinamide Formula. DESCRIPTION: Although we stand by pretty much all the products in the Omorfi range, this pair of products does feel like the true low-key power couple, promising no hype, but providing plenty of results. The hyaluronic hits first: lightweight, almost watery, sinking in fast and leaving skin with that quietly plumped, post-facial bounce. It’s hydration without heaviness, more dewy morning-after rather than glass-skin theatrics. Then comes the niacinamide, the calmer, cooler partner. It works in the background, softening redness, dialling down shine, and nudging uneven texture into something smoother, more lived-in. The best part is there’s no overload and no stickiness, and the result is a clearer, more balanced complexion that looks like yours. RRP: $59.95 per 50ml. AVAILABLE: FROM: omorfi.com.au.

↑ WHAT: MS Skin Tumeric Vitamin C Clay Mask. DESCRIPTION: This magical product is like sun-drenched skin in a jar – a golden-hued blend that leans into the antioxidant buzz of turmeric and vitamin C, promising brightness with a side of detox. On application, it’s cool, earthy, and just gritty enough to feel like it’s doing something without tipping into sandpaper territory. After ten minutes, there’s that familiar clay-tightness but it rinses clean without the dreaded post-mask drought. Skin looks clearer, a touch more luminous – like you’ve swapped fluorescent lighting for golden hour. One of our favourite products in the MS Skin range that brightens and tightens skin, is Aussie owned, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free. All boxes ticked, then. RRP: $59.99. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality beauty outlets and direct through msskin.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Napoleon Perdis x MODELROCK Lashes Collection. DESCRIPTION: Winter is great in that you get to stay in a lot and have time to contemplate/devise your next best look for when you venture out again. There’s that much time on your hands! This collaboration by Australian makeup authority Napoleon Perdis and cult favourite lash specialists, MODELROCK Lashes, is something to consider for the big night out. An exclusive capsule collection, it features seven premium lash styles, and is designed as a curated “lash wardrobe” to suit all outings – from subtle, everyday definition through to statement-making volume. ↑ WHAT: More than just pretty coffee table books! DESCRIPTION: Winter means being indoors a lot, and therefore spending a lot of time… thinking. Get some all-important reading in during those moments of contemplation and you’ll be thinking more wisely. If planing to beautify the garden is on the agenda, Flower Power by Jac Semmler is the perfect book to garner inspiration from. Alongside gorgeous photographs by Sarah Pannell are tips and tricks to turn your garden into a glorious array of colour and greenery by the start of Spring. Or at least see a few buds breaking if not swelling. The book not only helps you prepare your front and backyards for the best planting in any season, it goes on to talk about different ‘personalities’ of plants, scale and diversity, contrast and coherence and more. But if all you’ve got is a window sill tray of plants, this still makes a darn beautiful coffee table book.

If cooking up a storm is more your activity during the colder months, here are two beaut books to consider. You’re Welcome! by Raymond Tan with Audrey Payne is less a traditional cookbook and more an open invitation into a worldview where baking becomes celebration. Built around Tan’s signature Southeast Asian–inflected style, the book brings together playful recipes (matcha white chocolate cookies, pictured left, anyone?) with tradition-rich treats like mooncakes and Malaysian kueh. Gloriously photographed by Louise Hagger, you’ll want to do what Björk once sang about doing and that is eat the entire menu.

And rounding out this primary-coloured trio is Eat Like A Sardinian: Live To 100 by Francesco Mattana. It’s a little known fact that the people of Sardinia, off the coast of Italy, live to an extensive age on average – mostly due to their healthy diet. And a delicious diet it is. Mattana presents simple Sardinian staples, especially in the areas of aperitivi and antipasti (bruschetta, pizzette, etc), as well as more elaborate dishes such as Chiusoni con Ragu di Polpo (handmade pasta with octopus ragu); Paella Algherese (the Spanish influence coming from the Sardinian town of Alghero once under Spanish domination); and sweet treats such as apple cake, tiramisu, and almond and honey brittle. As they may say in Italy – tutto delicioso! RRP: Flower Power RRP $85.00 through Taschen; You’re Welcome! by Raymond Tan RRP $49.99 through Murdoch Books; Eat Like A Sardinian RRP $45.00 through Murdoch Books / Allen & Unwin.

↑ WHAT: Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. DESCRIPTION: When it comes to judging the quality of the product, the proof is in its longevity. Clarins has proven its worth as a fine cosmetics and skincare brand for decades now, but one particular product that finds itself on virtually every beauty editor’s must-have list is the Beauty Flash Balm. Launched in 1980, this magical product is as iconic as its beauty brand’s name. A legendary balm that can be used as an instant pick-me-up (applied in a thin layer) or as a generous mask, BFB instantly eliminates signs of fatigue, soothes skin, and boosts complexion radiance all at once. And remember, a little goes a very long way. RRP: $82.00, 50ml. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality beauty outlets and direct through clarins.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Rejuran Healing Pomata. DESCRIPTION: A rich, comforting cream designed for tired, stressed or sensitised skin. It contains Rejuran’s c-PDRN® technology – purified marine-based extract – along with ingredients including glycerin, cocoa seed butter, shea butter, panthenol, jojoba seed oil and Ceramide NP, making it a lovely handbag-sized winter skin saviour for areas needing extra care. Cream‘s founding editor swears by this brand, having tried various Rejuran products and confirming their benefits. So to see these results now coming out of the tiniest of tubes – it’s like finding the Holy Grail of beauty products. (Always read the label and follow the directions for use.) RRP: $39.00, 7g. AVAILABLE FROM: rejurancosmetics.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Youth Rx Renewal Oil Elixir. DESCRIPTION: There’s a certain quiet luxury to this product – the kind that doesn’t scream for attention but earns it with results. Silky without slipping into greasiness, this golden blend feels instantly comforting on the skin. Fine lines are softened, dullness lifts, and there’s a subtle glow that builds with each use.

This renewal oil layers beautifully, playing well with serums and creams, yet holds its own as a standalone saviour on rushed mornings.

And the scent? Delicate with an almost nostalgic aura – good reason than for the good elixer to be housed in a nice and heavy dark blue dropper bottle. RRP: Members’ price $59.00, 30ml. AVAILABLE FROM: youthlabdirect.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Epicutis Lipid Serum. DESCRIPTION: A lightweight, lipid-rich serum designed to support the skin barrier and help maintain skin comfort and hydration through the cooler months. It’s a beautiful winter option for skin that can feel dry, sensitive or compromised by seasonal changes. RRP: $380.00. AVAILABLE FROM: epicutis.com and select beauty outlets.

↑ WHAT: Ikou Baobab & Neroli Face Oil. DESCRIPTION: Silky and sensorial, this face oil from Australian skincare brand, Ikou, leans into ritual as much as results. Its golden blend hero ingredient – baobab oil – is loaded with vitamins and essential fatty acids that help hydrate, support elasticity and reinforce the skin barrier. Added camellia and jojoba plant extracts help soften and balance the skin without clogging pores. Rather than sit pretty, the oil melts into the skin to deliver a kind of ‘glow from within’ finish. But the real headline act is neroli – a softly floral, mood-calming note that works wonders on dry, stressed or sensitivity-prone skin. RRP: $68.00, 30ml. AVAILABLE FROM: ikou.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Balm Serum Boosted Skin Tint. DESCRIPTION: This beauty brand has come a long way since we initially heard it being regularly namedropped on RuPaul’s Drag Race. In fact, Anastasia Beverly Hills cosmetics are touted as some of the best by real women right across the globe. This skin tint aspect offers light, buildable coverage that blurs imperfections but never feels ‘cakey’. Thanks to it doubling up as a balm serum, the texture is balmy and never dries down to a matte state; instead the serum reaches into skin to leave a constant but not over-the-top sheen. The sun mightn’t be out much during winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t glow a little. Available in various tints so best checked against your skin complexion at the beauty counter. RRP: $79.00. AVAILABLE FROM: Quality beauty outlets including Mecca, Sephora, and David Jones.

↑ WHAT: APSKIN Activated Phenolics Face Mist. DESCRIPTION: A quick spritz of this mist feels like a small act of winter self-preservation. Powered by antioxidant-rich phenolics derived from real apples, along with all-important niacinamide and soothing botanicals, the mist delivers a featherlight veil of hydration that calms redness and reinforces the skin barrier when cold air bites hardest. APSKIN is less about drama, more about quiet efficacy. Winter skin craves support, and this mist works best layere – its humectants draw in moisture while antioxidants shield against environmental stress. A refreshing pick-me-up and, when paired with moisturiser, it becomes a glow-boosting essential. RRP: $49.00. AVAILABLE FROM: renovatio.com.au.

↑ WHAT: Sea Shepherd Australia Classic Unisex Beanie. DESCRIPTION: This trusty beanie will keep you warm during the long winter days and nights. 17.

  18. A glorious book about colour in, yes, glorious colour

If you’re like us, you love it whenever you discover a glorious new shade of Pantone colour. And we love good book that combines art, history, science, and a healthy dose of weirdness. Which is just what ‘The Mystery of Colour’ does, published by Thames & Hudson and written by colour expert David Coles.

A gorgeous introduction to art, science and history, The Mystery of Colour should appeal to curious kids, budding artists and adults who still like discovering that something as everyday as a tube of paint has a rather extraordinary backstory.

‘The Mystery of Colour’ is available from good bookstores and online through Thames & Hudson, RRP $34.99.
