4 A Gallery of Night: Mira filled an entire sketchbook with moonlit paintings, each page glowing faintly if held up to real moonlight later. She decided daytime colors were nice, but nighttime had its own kind of magic.

The Girl Who Painted with Moonlight

1 Ordinary Paint, Ordinary Pictures: Mira loved to paint, but her daytime pictures always looked flat and dull, no matter how many colors she mixed on her little wooden palette.

  8. What are the most #radical kids' #books? I'm most interested in board books, because of my kid's age and destructiveness, but I'll accept any books for #children.

By radical I mean challenging "business as usual", such as capitalism and climate collapse, patriarchy and hierarchy, but there are so many aspects of the status quo that deserve to be questioned that I don't want to limit what "radical" means; interpret it as you will. It should piss off fascists, tho.

3 The Big Bonk: Months later, right on cue, a warm gust shook the branch. The pinecone tumbled down and bonked Bramble squarely on the nose, jolting him awake at the very first hint of spring.

2 The Pinecone Plan: A clever woodpecker suggested tying a pinecone to a branch just above Bramble's den entrance, rigged so the first warm breeze of spring would knock it loose and drop it on his nose.

4 A Perfect Imperfection: The traveler bought Copper on the spot, insisting his wobbly whistle was the most charming sound in the whole shop. Some things, it turns out, are loved precisely because they're a little off-key.

3 An Unlikely Customer: One rainy afternoon, a tired traveler wandered in, drawn not by shine but by the odd, warbling whistle drifting from the back shelf - it reminded him of an old song from home.

    The Kettle That Sang Off-Key

1 A Broken Whistle: Every other kettle in the shop whistled a perfect clear note when boiling, but old Copper the kettle had a small dent that made his whistle come out wobbly, flat, and slightly ridiculous.

  19. Are there any #COVID conscious children's books? We're especially interested in board books because of our baby's age and destructiveness, but I'll take anything.

What I hear from other parents is that there are a few from the early pandemic with outdated info like standing 6 feet apart and cloth masks, but nothing really relevant today.

Alternately, if you want your child to care about public health, what books might help?

  23. Rainy & Writing

Good Morning. How are you? Doing well & feeling fine, I hope? I've been watching videos online of NJ & NY & the water. Me & mine can relate to getting flooded; not like that, though. This weather is so crazy. Looks like this thing sits and spins until late tomorrow (Monday). In between refreshing the radar on our local news channel, and every other weather site I can find, I think I made some progress with that story I told you I was stuck on. I added in a new starting point to show how we […]

  24. Griselda & Esther

Griselda and Esther were not always proficient in shape shifting into ravens. It took quite a few years to get it right. One year, Griselda had to walk around with raven feet and Esther had a beak. _____________ Good Morning, everyone. I hope you’re all doing well and feeling fine. We are in for a wet & windy few days. I hope it’s not as bad as the weather forecast says, but we’ll see. If you’re in the path of this crazy weather, take care & stay safe. I’m considering […]

  26. Stumped & Sunday

I love Shel Silverstein's poetry. "flax-golden tales" is what I have been trying to "spin". Good morning, everyone. I hope you're all doing well and feeling fine. Apologies for not posting sooner, but I have been in the trenches of storyland, so to speak. Unrelated to the Max Hamby series. I wrote a piece quite a few years ago. It got used for blog posts and to share with all of you, then put to the side. I want o expand on it, because there might be something there, but I can't seem to […]

  27. I read "Bunnicula" to my 7 year old recently, it was my first time revisiting it since I was their age, and it slaps exactly as hard as I remembered if not harder. Weird and funny and tense and cinematic, fantastic prose, just a complete delight. kid asked me to start over the moment it ended. highly recommend.

  32. Sunday at the library 📚

Took the kids to the public library after Mass. It was supposed to be a quick trip, but you know how that goes—going to the library is hardly ever quick with four kids in tow. 😂

Here are a few of the books the kids checked out. 📚💜

Zephaniah (9) loves Vox books. He likes to follow along with the narrator reading the book aloud.

Vox books has helped him with his reading skills, too!

Zechariah (11) always checks put at least one Minecraft book when we go to the library. This time he got four Minecraft books! 😄

He loves playing the game and creating so many designs. The books help him learn new ways to build and create.

I spotted this one on the “New Books” shelf. The little cowgirl riding her horse caught my eye.

Zaya and I watch a lot of the Canadian TV show Heartland, so I thought she’d love to read this book.

Silly Zhen (13) found this book in the nonfiction section of the children’s library and she thought it’d be a funny read. 😂

When Zaya (6) saw the illustration of Bob Ross on the cover of Rima and the Painter, she immediately grabbed the book and excitedly showed me the book.

“Look, Mommy!” Zaya said to me happily pointing at the Bob Ross illustration. “It’s the painter we watch on TV!”

    💜 XO

  35. I really love reading. I used to read mostly #scifi and #fantasy, so you could often find me with my nose buried in #Discworld, #Tolkien, The #Witcher, or #HarryPotter back in school. These days, I also enjoy classic literature by "great authors".

And yes, I'm now an expert in children's books because I read to my son every night before bed #kidsbooks. Sadly, I don't have much time for other reading these days.
