I should do my (US) taxes at some point. If you have used a CPA instead of H&R Block / TurboTax, what has your experience / cost been like?
H&R Block was $300 last year if memory serves me right and that was entirely online and asynchronous. There's nothing super complicated about my taxes so I'd rather not spend as much if I can avoid it.

Today I learned through the Malicious Life podcast that H&R Block used to own CompuServe in the 80's and 90's. CompuServe was an online service provider at that time that also sold time sharing and remote access services.

FYI, for anybody on a Mac using the H&R Block software to file your taxes. There’s an issue submitting federal returns, with error code FD-31-FMT-8042.
They escalated my case to software support. The support person I talked to has confirmed that this is happening to others.

Intuit spent more than $2 million lobbying last year, much of it spent on legislation that would permanently bar the government from offering taxpayers prefilled returns. H&R Block spent $3 million, also directing some of their efforts towards the bill. Among the 60 co-sponsors of the bipartisan bill: then congressman and now Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.
The bill, called the Free File Act of 2016, looks on the surface to be consumer-friendly. It makes permanent a public-private partnership in which 13 private tax preparation companies — called the “Free File Alliance” — have offered free online tax filings to lower- and middle-income families.
