Just did a final check of my 1040/540 #TaxReturns & printed them out for final prep & mailing with the required checks via Priority Mail on Wed 04/15/2026.

The 1040 is 14 pages long & the 540 is 24 pages long; 38 pages long including the 1040 that has to be filed with it. 🤦‍♂️

I've been using #TurboTax to prep my returns since it 1st became available in the early 80's.

It would be a tiresome & frustrating task to fill out & print the returns w/o it &, while I dislike paying for it each year, it costs far less & takes far less time for me prep my returns using it, than if I hired an accountant to do it for me. 🤷‍♂️

She also worked as a driver for Grubhub and Uber, which means she has legitimate business expenses (gas, insurance, etc.). But when she tries to enter those expenses, TurboTax tells her she must upgrade for $150. That upgrade would wipe out half of her refund.

I've gotten the "Hmm, looks like we've hit a snag" error from #TurboTax so many times this year I've lost count. It kept happening even after the "fix" described above. I had to switch from interview to forms mode multiple times to enter data because interview mode is so broken.
It seems clear #Intuit is letting the desktop app wither on the vine to force people to switch to the web version.
I'll switch to TaxCut before that. No way I'm putting my tax data in Intuit's cloud.

Figuring out how to call #Intuit on the phone to get this fixed was a whole other saga. TLDR the phone number is 800-446-8848 in case you need it.
I used their chatbot to get that number. It gave me four different wrong/inapplicable answers before I finally coerced the right answer out of it.
They seem to have trained the chatbot on the entire historical content of the #TurboTax forums even though much of the information there was either wrong to begin with or is outdated.

I don't normally like to promote products but after years of suffering through #turbotax, I got so fed up with their lobbying of congress to block free tax filing options and did a little reading. Bottom line, was that #freetaxusa (dorky name) worked extremely well, imported my old intuit data, website is faster, much cleaner flow through the sections and federal filing is free... Just did a preliminary prep of my 1040/540 returns in

I have a very uncomplicated return. Just a matter of filling in the boxes.
I owe much less than expected. 😊

I always owe money. So, there's no point in filing early.

The tax penalties on the money owed is minimal & I will file the returns by mail with a check when due on 4/15/2026.

I file by mail & pay by check because I think the IRS should be required to put in some effort to get my $ by processing my return by hand.

I also shouldn't be penalized by losing any interest on funds paid and the longer it takes the IRS to submit the check for payment the less $ that I lose on the float.

While #Intuit is an evil corp, #turbotax does make things amazingly simple - answers everything same as last year assuming nothing has changed, imports all your T4 and T3 and other forms from #CRA 's website automatically, then #netfiles your return. So its "yes, they're evil and its a grift, but the product still _works_ and saves me time."

I just wish we were like #Denmark and #Sweden where the government just files your taxes for you.

For anyone contemplating the new TurboTax offering of uploading your crap and letting someone else do your taxes, it's not ready for prime time.

The experience is super disjointed and prolonged. We got federal plus two states for $150 which is less than it would have been for us to do it ourselves. So, OK it was fine. But if it's more expensive next year than doing it on our own we won't bother.

Honestly, we really should stop with Intuit. It's just another evil megacorp that truly doesn't deserve our money.

And yes, I know #Intuit is shit, and I wish I didn't need to use #TurboTax, but I've tried the competition and the unfortunate fact of the matter is that TurboTax is the best consumer tax prep software available that handles all of my tax circumstances. Any other company's software will be a downgrade, but it's a downgrade I will live with if Intuit stops allowing me to do my taxes locally on the desktop.
