After I retired last year, I joined a social‑support program. Once a week, I talk with a woman who works as a waitress in Appalachia. She told me she’s expecting a $300 tax refund — but she’s facing a problem.

I've gotten the "Hmm, looks like we've hit a snag" error from #TurboTax so many times this year I've lost count. It kept happening even after the "fix" described above. I had to switch from interview to forms mode multiple times to enter data because interview mode is so broken.
It seems clear #Intuit is letting the desktop app wither on the vine to force people to switch to the web version.
I'll switch to TaxCut before that. No way I'm putting my tax data in Intuit's cloud.

Figuring out how to call #Intuit on the phone to get this fixed was a whole other saga. TLDR the phone number is 800-446-8848 in case you need it.
I used their chatbot to get that number. It gave me four different wrong/inapplicable answers before I finally coerced the right answer out of it.
They seem to have trained the chatbot on the entire historical content of the #TurboTax forums even though much of the information there was either wrong to begin with or is outdated.

After sending me multiple emails per week for months trying to get me to switch from to the web version of #TurboTax, #Intuit decided they would make one final push in the desktop app itself, inviting me to try the web version for free after I installed and launched the desktop version.
And if that wasn't bad enough, after I said no they popped up a Qualtrics survey asking why.

I don't normally like to promote products but after years of suffering through #turbotax, I got so fed up with their lobbying of congress to block free tax filing options and did a little reading. Bottom line, was that #freetaxusa (dorky name) worked extremely well, imported my old intuit data, website is faster, much cleaner flow through the sections and federal filing is free... Filed our #incometax es in #Canada yesterday. While #Intuit is an evil corp, #turbotax does make things amazingly simple - answers everything same as last year assuming nothing has changed, imports all your T4 and T3 and other forms from #CRA 's website automatically, then #netfiles your return. So its "yes, they're evil and its a grift, but the product still _works_ and saves me time."

I just wish we were like #Denmark and #Sweden where the government just files your taxes for you.

I very reluctantly filed US taxes last year with TurboTax as it seemed like it might have the most robust handling for becoming a non-resident mid-year and some of the other forms I needed.

Now it's sent me a couple emails saying "your W2 from the company you had a W2 from in 2024 might be ready!" from a no-reply email and it feels really gross! I will not be receiving a W2 from that company at all in 2025, and it's not a sore spot for me, but with all the layoffs happening, how many people are getting those emails as a punch in the gut this year?

OMG, TT actually shows me last years’ 1099-DIV and INT in alphabetical order. I've been asking for this for 10 years.

I store my tax documents in a location of my choosing, not TT's choosing. This time it showed last year’s tax return as available for import and imported it. Improvement.

And file saved. Hooray.

Entered basic data and try to save document before continuing. Spinning wheel of death. I have to start from the beginning again.

Transferring my 2024 data failed. The entire reason for using Turbotax just failed.

Actually, I use TT to just organize myself and I send the financial data, TT and forms, to my accountant. Accountant always finds errors in TT return.

Just starting up TurboTax 2025.

Amazon gives me an activation code. Intuit asks for a license code.

It is not clear that I need to click on the code after it has been entered. Unnecessary and unobvious step.

Then it wants me to switch to TT Online version. I click cancel. It quits TT.

Do this twice. The last time I spot the small print that is for continuing with the off-line version Then I am again pushed to switch to online version.

Finally in.

And yes, I know #Intuit is shit, and I wish I didn't need to use #TurboTax, but I've tried the competition and the unfortunate fact of the matter is that TurboTax is the best consumer tax prep software available that handles all of my tax circumstances. Any other company's software will be a downgrade, but it's a downgrade I will live with if Intuit stops allowing me to do my taxes locally on the desktop.

#Intuit is _aggressively_ (at least one email per week for the past month and a half) trying to convince me to switch from the desktop #TurboTax application to their online application.
There is no way in hell I am uploading all my income-tax data into Intuit's cloud app or anybody else's.
I suspect they want to stop producing the desktop app, but the day they switch to cloud-only is the day I will switch to another company's tax-prep software.
