  1. CW: swear words, financial web forms

And a giant F$&k you to every person out there who designs a form that makes you type out 9 digit numbers twice rather than allowing you to paste from a password manager... #quicken - you know you're guilty..

  6. This is a very familiar story. I was a user of Adobe Lightroom from very early versions. When Adobe first introduced subscriptions I stuck with purchase option for as long as I could. I did end up with a subscription for a while.

But then my daughter was studying graphic design and I discovered Affinity Photo. I switched and have never looked back. Sure there are a few things I miss but not enough to pay subscriptions.

This also happened with Quicken. I have years of financial transactions in Quicken. When Quicken introduced subscriptions I just remained using Quicken 17.

When Apple switched to Apple Silicon, I was thankful for Rosetta to allow me to continue using Quicken 17 and I still do today.

Now Rosetta will soon sunset and I have never found anything to replace Quicken, so I have been writing my own system

  11. @roguefoam I use HomeBank. It vaguely reminds me of my first #financial package, #Quicken 1995. 👴
I am cautious about software that downloads transactions automatically because entering them manually is part of the value.
#HomeBank is fine, no complaints, but I'm interested in hearing about other options people like.

  16. #ComputerCrash

Still working on getting my new computer up to speed after my old laptop crashed.

Was able to reinstall #TurboTax 2024 & reload the tax file. Important because I have a huge tax loss carryover that I need to be able to continue to carryover. 😎

Reinstalled a copy of #Quicken Deluxe yesterday. Only negative about that is that I now have to pay a subscription to continue to use it but I've been using Quicken for decades & I know how it works.

Am willing to try something new if it's free but my search for a free Quicken alternative came up empty.

Still have to restore some #LibreOffice text & spreadsheet files. Have hard copies & could try to scan & OCR read them but there aren't many but will probablyjust retype them manually. 🤷‍♂️

With the recent crash of my old laptop, I lost old non-subscription Quicken program & all of the data associated

Had a disc for an old 2017 version of Quicken that I thought that I could just upload onto my new computer but it didn't work & couldn't find a "free" checking/financial account program that I liked.

So, I caved in & subscribed to Quicken Deluxe online which is identical to the program I was using before but didn't have to pay $72/year to use.

    What a racket!!! 🤦‍♂️

I just brought my banking/investment accounts up to date on the program but I'm still going to be looking for a FREE one to use in it's place.

Please post any recommendations for any FREE, non-subscription alternatives to Quicken that you may know of in reply to this toot.

    Thanks!!!

  22. Want to get off of #Quicken or some other commercial #financial #bedgeting application? I've just found one that is amazing: Actual Budget. It's very similar to Quicken (although it's a bit different, from what I've heard), it's local-first, has an integrated sync server, is secure, integrated accounts download via one of four services (based on your region)***, excellent reporting, handles budgeting, and more...

Honestly, I've used GnuCash in the past, and it was such a pain I'd given up on it.  But Actual Budget I've managed to set up, get most of my accounts to download automatically (I have eight accounts to manage - only one I have to do manually), and started reconciling transactions.

I managed all of this in about two hours.

Oh, and the final, best part of this: Actual Budget is Open Source under an MIT License.

*** The sync service may have charges. Here in the U.S. it's $15/yr. Given the number of transactions I have to deal with, this is a pittance...

  31. @AutisticInnovator Alas, there is no Quicken for #Linux. The #OpenSource geeks made their own competitor called #GnuCash. I'm wondering what #Quicken can do, which GnuCash can't do.

A lack of finance-related/accounting software is one of the sore spots in the world of #Linux. All the accountants of the world wouldn't dream of switching to Linux. And they are always the ones close to the money - you basically can't marginalize them or ignore them somehow. Whatever crazy dystopian future #Microsoft (with #Windows 11 and beyond) or #Apple envisions, the world of finance insists on a front-row seat on the train to go to that place, taking everyone else along with them, pretty much.

  36. Remember we do not necessarily need the latest (often bloated) update of #software (#apps) that worked when we bought it. I'm running a 2011 version of #Quicken with no problems because Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (#GAAP) have not changed since then and essentially all it does is add and subtract.

  40. #Quicken

Using an old version of Quicken (2017) & the backup file got corrupted.

Was trying to figure out if to restore it w/i success until I looked into buying a new version of Quicken which I just discovered is only available by monthly subscription.

    WTF??? 😡

Then I downloaded a free checking program & was about to install it when I somehow stumbled onto the way to restore the Quicken backup & use it again.🤗

So,the status quo is established & I don't need to f*ck with any software changes for now. ☺️

  41. Really bums me out that I bought #Quicken once in the early 2000's (for about $100 I think) and used it FOR OVER A DECADE. I miss the days when you could just purchase software once and then use it forever.

Then at some point in the mid teens, they stopped supporting the version I had (or it just stopped working with newer operating systems) and now it's a forced subscription service where I have to pay $60 - $75 every year & the price keeps GOING UP! 😡
