  1. CW: swear words, financial web forms

And a giant F$&k you to every person out there who designs a form that makes you type out 9 digit numbers twice rather than allowing you to paste from a password manager... #quicken - you know you're guilty..

  3. This is a very familiar story. I was a user of Adobe Lightroom from very early versions. When Adobe first introduced subscriptions I stuck with purchase option for as long as I could. I did end up with a subscription for a while.

But then my daughter was studying graphic design and I discovered Affinity Photo. I switched and have never looked back. Sure there are a few things I miss but not enough to pay subscriptions.

This also happened with Quicken. I have years of financial transactions in Quicken. When Quicken introduced subscriptions I just remained using Quicken 17.

When Apple switched to Apple Silicon, I was thankful for Rosetta to allow me to continue using Quicken 17 and I still do today.

Now Rosetta will soon sunset and I have never found anything to replace Quicken, so I have been writing my own system

  5. @roguefoam I use HomeBank. It vaguely reminds me of my first package, 1995. 👴
I am cautious about software that downloads transactions automatically because entering them manually is part of the value.
is fine, no complaints, but I'm interested in hearing about other options people like.

  7. Want to get off of #Quicken or some other commercial #financial #bedgeting application? I've just found one that is amazing: Actual Budget. It's very similar to Quicken (although it's a bit different, from what I've heard), it's local-first, has an integrated sync server, is secure, integrated accounts download via one of four services (based on your region)***, excellent reporting, handles budgeting, and more...

Honestly, I've used GnuCash in the past, and it was such a pain I'd given up on it.  But Actual Budget I've managed to set up, get most of my accounts to download automatically (I have eight accounts to manage - only one I have to do manually), and started reconciling transactions.

I managed all of this in about two hours.

Oh, and the final, best part of this: Actual Budget is Open Source under an MIT License.

*** The sync service may have charges. Here in the U.S. it's $15/yr. Given the number of transactions I have to deal with, this is a pittance...

  8. Install latest Quicken Mac update.

Hi Quicken user, here's a bunch of new features for you in our latest update. Thanks for updating.

Click on that new feature tab in Account window.

"Oh sorry, for that you need a Premier license. Your Deluxe license just doesn't cut it. We showed you the tab to entice you to click on this shit.”

    Feature tab disappears.

  10. @AutisticInnovator Alas, there is no Quicken for #Linux. The #OpenSource geeks made their own competitor called #GnuCash. I'm wondering what #Quicken can do, which GnuCash can't do.

A lack of finance-related/accounting software is one of the sore spots in the world of #Linux. All the accountants of the world wouldn't dream of switching to Linux. And they are always the ones close to the money - you basically can't marginalize them or ignore them somehow. Whatever crazy dystopian future #Microsoft (with #Windows 11 and beyond) or #Apple envisions, the world of finance insists on a front-row seat on the train to go to that place, taking everyone else along with them, pretty much.

  12. Remember we do not necessarily need the latest (often bloated) update of #software (#apps) that worked when we bought it. I'm running a 2011 version of #Quicken with no problems because Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (#GAAP) have not changed since then and essentially all it does is add and subtract.

  13. #Quicken

Using an old version of Quicken (2017) & the backup file got corrupted.

Was trying to figure out if to restore it w/i success until I looked into buying a new version of Quicken which I just discovered is only available by monthly subscription.

    WTF??? 😡

Then I downloaded a free checking program & was about to install it when I somehow stumbled onto the way to restore the Quicken backup & use it again.🤗

So,the status quo is established & I don't need to f*ck with any software changes for now. ☺️

  14. Really bums me out that I bought #Quicken once in the early 2000's (for about $100 I think) and used it FOR OVER A DECADE. I miss the days when you could just purchase software once and then use it forever.

Then at some point in the mid teens, they stopped supporting the version I had (or it just stopped working with newer operating systems) and now it's a forced subscription service where I have to pay $60 - $75 every year & the price keeps GOING UP! 😡

  16. "That software won me over big time. I used it for over 20 years to help manage my finances and there’s no doubt it was a critical tool in my toolbelt toward reaching financial independence."

  17. I signed up #quicken #quickbooks as it supports HMRC’s payroll and VAT gateways. The payroll part never worked. So I ended up using HMRC’s free basic tools.

VAT worked but at £35 a month - just to submit my VAT return - when there are other services that charge that PER YEAR!!

I don’t need all the time tracking and invoicing shit. I want the basics to work first. Then I might consider the rest.

Cancelled it all just now and a feel a weight has been released from shoulders - all the menus and pops up and upselling shit is now no more. I used to get stressed just logging in. Should have acted on the when I first used it.

  18. So, I've moved on from #Quicken to #Fidelity OneView, but this Sequence product that shows your money as a flow looks pretty cool. $9/month for the cheapest plan is a little steep. I'll try for one month and decide.

  20. Still enjoying #Quicken #Simplifi after about a month and a half. With the #Intuit #Mint shutdown coming in March – well, transition to what by all accounts is a subpar experience in #CreditKarma – I’m glad I was able to find a good replacement.

They recently announced a full one year trial for switchers:

    quicken.com/lp/simplifi-vs-min

I contacted them, and they refunded my payment for this year. So far I’ve had several great interactions with them, and this one was particularly nice.

  21. Nice flex #Intuit. Discontinue your free #Mint app and advertise your paid #Quicken app as an alternative.

  23. I hate #quicken financial management software SO SO SO SO MUCH! I miss twitter because I could tag them and complain about how shitty their product is.

  24. Apparently #intuit #mint is shutting down. I used #quicken before, but it was expensive, slow, awkward and not remotely modern, which is why I switched.

The thing is, I need *something* that does expense/income tracking and reporting, imports bank and other transactions, basic budgeting, net worth tracking, etc.

So what is the modern alternative?

  25. #SVB integrates via API with companies using:

    #quicken
    #quickbooks
    #mint

So expect these APIs to go down.. and #phishing related to these…
