finally doing taxes, is it normal that i cannot log into freefilefillableforms.com right after creating an account?
I just created two accounts with the same email and phone but different usernames/passwords, and I can't log into either ("wrong password" but wrong mfer i do not make that mistake, also the password is 20char long and the only symbol is
_which i don't mind saying in public because i did the math). Did I create "false positive" accounts that didn't actually get created, or is it normal to have to calm down and wait a business day or three before it becomes possible to do taxes? -

RBC Wealth Management, who handle my IRA, screwed up the state portion of the 1099-R. Two fields.
And when I contacted them to complain about the field being blank, they blew me off because "the IRS does not care about that field". Well, the IRS doesn't. but the state of Colorado does...

Grr. I have used TaxAct software (backed by H&R Block) for years, in the downloaded form, not online. But their support for the downloaded version seems to be evaporating: they used to support both MAC and Windows... MAC support is gone, and while they will still sell you the downloadable Windows version, there is no longer a way to access their support system from the desktop version with questions or problems.

I should do my (US) taxes at some point. If you have used a CPA instead of H&R Block / TurboTax, what has your experience / cost been like?
H&R Block was $300 last year if memory serves me right and that was entirely online and asynchronous. There's nothing super complicated about my taxes so I'd rather not spend as much if I can avoid it.

I mean, UBI is cool and all, but it would be nice if we could even start with "Hey, a certain level of income shouldn't be taxed, whether or not it's for a business, because it's just barely enough to cover living which is a thing you need to do to run the business." It's like reverse UBI.

Starting on my tax prep.
Given my understanding of how expenses work for small businesses, and the reasoning behind why they're deductible, I don't understand why the expenses of living aren't the expenses of working or profiting, from a tax perspective.
I need my computer to write. I need these books for my research. I need gas to travel to network and sell books. They're not "profit" & thus are deductible.
I need food to write, too. I need a house to write in and shelter the books I sell. I need vitamins to think clearly. Etc. So why isn't all that tax deductible? It sure isn't "profit." That is money that vanishes all the same to keep me able to run my business. I'm still just breaking even in life, but US Gov doesn't seem to think so.
I get that the idea of the "standard deductible" is supposed to cover all that, but honestly it doesn't, especially when it comes to self-employment. I owe self-emp taxes regardless of if I break even or how near I am to poverty. #USTaxes #USpol

...I'm getting a decent chunk of money back, I sent the feds too much last year, between regular withholding and estimated tax payments. Yay!
(it happens; I have regular income and SE income and alimony, so I find it tricky to get my withholding right and I tend to err on the side of w/h too much.)

Was going to update the spreadsheet where I had estimated my taxes for planning purposes, mid-last-year...
But just realized my employer has posted my W-2 and all the IRS tax forms and instructions are out, so... I guess... I'm doing my taxes tomorrow. Or at least drafting them.
