  4. "No one should die alone. No one should grieve alone."

These are the watchwords for the annual Hospice of the Conejo Reading of the Names ceremony, held last night at Oaks Mall.

I was honored to participate in the event, which involved the reading of more than 500 names of community members (including a few beloved pets) whom we lost in the past year. I recognized more than a few names, and found the event very meaningful. If you need help, call the hospice at 805-495-2145.

Thanks to the organizers, and to WHS's A Class Act, which began the ceremony in song.

  6. CW: communication skills for hospice care, pilot course, UK

Anyone working in #hospice care in the UK, this might be of interest: pilot courses for teams of 6 to 12 people, on how to use "Clean Language" in conversations about end-of-life care.

1 day in-person, or 2 x half a day if online. CPD certificate.

"Clean Language" is about how you can talk with people and listen to people without accidentally bringing in your own baggage when you didn't mean to.

This skill can help you reach clearer/deeper understanding of other people's worlds. And it can mean you're less likely to set off unnecessary disagreements, so that conversations go more smoothly.

Pilot aimed at South West, Yorkshire & North East. I asked Judy why those areas in particular, and she said those are areas where they're building up "clusters of expertise", but actually it could be any UK end-of-life group.

(I slightly know Judy from having been to a little community event of hers about Clean Language in healthcare. And we have colleagues in common.)

  7. Our Podcast on Medical Aid in Dying (MAID)

HB140, End of Life Options, just passed in the #Delaware House and now has to go before the Senate and get the Governor's signature.

Rather than changing minds, Dr Varipapa switches the conversation to the important ethical concept of patient autonomy and choice as well as the primary concepts of MAID. Dr Vest provides a counterpoint to MAID.

Those who oppose MAID have concerns about the ‘slippery slope’, something which has not been demonstrated in Oregon or the other 10 states that permit MAID.

  8. With #aging, we begin to think about things that seemed far-off and even improbable earlier in life. We get flooded with advice for retirement planning, how to sign up for Medicare and Social Security, and perhaps proper estate planning. We hear a lot less about preparing for end-of-life decisions and #palliative care, including #hospice and much more. Wise & Well's newest writer, a Mayo doctor, has you covered.

  12. CW: Mutual aid request for a friend who is dying 💔

"Thank you to those who have donated.

Sadly, I have been told that I must go to hospice. My heart efficiency has crashed and the tests show that fixing the issues are not feasible. I have accepted my fate and I am just going to try to enjoy my time that I have left.

Thanks to a nonprofit and Medicaid the majority of my hospice bill has been paid. However, I am responsible for a $2000 copay. I haven’t been able to work for the past month and so I don’t have the money to pay it, so any amount you can help me with will be appreciated. If there is any extra, it will go towards funeral expenses. Thank you for everything. Don’t be sad, it’s just the start of a new journey"

Any bit helps! I want him to be able to have peace and for his children to also have peace of mind in his past days.

Thank you so much for the shares and donations 💜🌻

  13. CW: Talk About ALS, Death, Terminal Illness

My mom's husband is in the final stages of ALS. It's so cruel. At my age I know a lot of people who are dead now, some of whom were younger when they died than I am now. We're all going to die someday, no getting around it. Contrary to our cultural norms, it's good to think about that. And I promise you, death is NOT the worst thing that can happen to you. Often it's a kindness.

  16. If I were looking for a good book to read about hospice chaplaincy, does anyone know of one to recommend? I'm hoping for more along the lines of personal stories and experiences, but I'm open to other types, too. If you know someone who might have good recommendations, feel free to boost! Thanks so much!

  17. An important perspective on hospices. My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer about 18 months ago, she was initially horrified to receive a letter about palliative care, but her local hospice offers her so much more than just end of life care. This includes therapy, massages and any number of other outpatient services for her and her family.

In the #UnitedStates, more than 1.6 million people are — I am done with the "#Identify as" meme — #transgender.

Of these, more than one-fifth are over the age of 65, the vast majority of whom #transitioned in the latter part of their lives.
