La Trinity 1260 integrará un core SID por hardware en su FPGA
La aceleradora Trinity 1260 recibirá próximamente una importante mejora gracias a la integración por hardware de un core compatible con los chips SID 6581 y 8580 del Commodore 64 en la FPGA de la propia tarjeta.
Hasta ahora, la FPGA de la Trinity 1260 se encargaba principalmente de la lógica y los tiempos de funcionamiento de la aceleradora. Sin embargo, al disponer de recursos libres, el equipo de desarrollo ha aprovechado ese espacio para incorporar un core SID, permitiendo que la reproducción de música en este formato pase a depender casi por completo del hardware. Como resultado, el consumo de CPU en un Motorola 68060 se reduce aproximadamente del 60 % al 5 %, liberando una gran cantidad de recursos para el resto del sistema.
El soporte estará integrado en la playsid.library, por lo que cualquier aplicación compatible con esta biblioteca podrá beneficiarse de esta implementación. Entre ellas se encuentran el emulador MagiC64 y reproductores de música SID como HippoPlayer, sin necesidad de modificaciones específicas.
La integración del core en la FPGA de la Trinity 1260 ha sido realizada por Miguel Fides, mientras que el desarrollo del core compatible con los chips SID 6581 y 8580 corresponde a Ramón «rampa» Martínez.
