  1. What if your UI dynamically scaled its media footprint based on real-time power grid intensity? Carbon-aware design patterns let us throttle heavy assets, streamline CSS, and minimize energy burn when regional emissions spike.

We look at the APIs, responsive green UX, and technical architecture in our 2026 guide at Silphium Design:

  2. Bookmark: State of the Fossil-Free Internet Report

Page summary: In this first annual briefing by Green Web Foundation, we examine the biggest obstacles to a fossil-free internet. This year’s focus: the rise of too many dirty data centres.

  5. Green Wien Event-Tipp zu Rechenzentren & Suffizienz! 🪴

Permacomputing Meetup #5 (by Simon Repp) - 13.01.2026

„This time around, we are looking forward to Maël Madon presenting their "Reflections on sufficiency for data centers": "I am a researcher in Computer Science, with an interest in environmental impacts of computing. In this talk, I want to share with you some insights from my PhD work, in which we tried to go beyond efficiency measures for data centers, and rather think about "sufficiency". I will explain how we approached the problem, give some results and also personal thoughts on the question."“

  12. One discourse I'm currently missing in the space of #GreenWeb #SustainableWebDesign #GreenIT: How to organize sustainable alternatives for the current "everyone has to fly to one developer conference location" ✈️ 🌱

  14. Thinking about starting a #GreenCoding & #GreenWeb blog, because I haven't seen one which aggregates news yet (like wptavern.com/ e.g.). I see lots of stuff on LinkedIn every week.

But blogs are a bit left behind nowadays (Getting into YouTube Shorts would maybe generate more awareness for the topic). And it's time consuming + it's connected to the big lost fight for 1,5 / 2 degree celsisus: You have to beg Mega Corps like Google, Amazon & Co to take action = can be depressing. 🤷🤔

  15. "Electricity Maps" is fascinating! You can visualise a map showing a selection of realtime and historical eletricity use and approximate associated carbon emmisions.

A real eye-opener. Europe and UK is doing quite well, very suprising that Australia apparently isn't making use of that abundant sunshine!

Add the "wind" and "solar" layers for a kickass screensaver..

  16. #GreenCoding #GreenWeb Hey! Has anybody here already read "Building Green Software" by Anne Currie, Sarah Hsu, Sara Bergman by chance? Or has someone taken the (free) course "Green Software for Practitioners (LFC131)"?

I’d love to dive a bit deeper into green coding & green web after I started with #SustainableWebDesign by Tom Greenwood a few years ago + saw the talk „Fooled by the Website Carbon Calculator” by Roberta Haseleu + read inspiring blog posts by @fershad 1/
