  13. “End socialism for private car storage”: How should we pay for street maintenance? An economist offers seven rules that could be summarized as two principles. First, let those who cause the costs bear them. Second, don’t neglect maintenance. Patching streets is a lot cheaper than rebuilding them. cityobservatory.org/how-should #publicworks #localgov

  17. Why it matters:
Small-town budget talks and school board meetings decide whether kids get safe buildings, clean water and funded programs — while big-name politicians shout about nothing. Democracy is mostly this tedious; skipping it hands power to the absurd and the irresponsible.

  23. Another month and Torbay Council manage to remain the smallest UK council homepage in terms of bytes 👍

Their homepage comes in at 320kB (uncompressed) and two-thirds of that is JS; a single cookies script is a third of their page total! So they still have plenty of room to improve even more.

    The move for the #FederalGov, #LocalGov, #CountyGov & #StateGov to start moving away from #Meta is a smart from a #security & #infosec stand point.

The move #banning #Meta apps on their FederalGov, #LocalGov, #CountyGov & #StateGov computers, tablets & handhelds will only increase their security and reduce their attack surface for their employees.

  26. @ChrisMayLA6 As an ex #localgov officer I'm in two minds about this, because on the one hand it's a further centralisation of power, but on the other it does make local government budgets easier - and if the government wants people to see actual improvements quickly on the ground, in their communities, then funding councils is the way to do it.

  29. The moment was summed up as “Ford to City: Drop Dead,” but the blame for NYC’s near-bankruptcy 50 years ago lay not with Gerald Ford but with a generation of city hall insiders who ignored growing financial threats and, really, didn’t even keep the books. We will always have threats. Will your city have honest bookkeeping, so you can see the threats and act? nytimes.com/2025/10/30/nyregio #localgov

  33. He made your visit better: Wyche Fowler was a congressman, U.S. senator and ambassador to Saudi Arabia, experiences that make for an interesting biography. But for visitors to Atlanta, Fowler’s greatest contribution came when he was on the city council. He cast the deciding vote that located a transit station … inside Atlanta’s airport. saportareport.com/biography-of #localgov

After that I grabbed CISA’s official list of .gov sites from GitHub and used the Nominatim API to add a lat/long to each listing. That enhanced dataset is the heart of CivicRadius Search, a new way to find and […]
