"George Washington made the office one of honor. Andrew Jackson, of democratic vigor. Abraham Lincoln brought theretofore unseen energy to the executive and Franklin Roosevelt put the office, and himself, at the center of Washington policymaking. Lyndon Johnson marked the White House with his domineering ambition and Richard Nixon did the same with his crushing paranoia."

"And from the opened case spilled his black uniform, like a black nebula, stars glittering here or there, distantly, in the material. I kneaded the dark stuff in my warm hands; I smelled the planet Mars, an iron smell, and the planet Venus, a green ivy smell, and the planet Mercury, a scent of sulphur and fire; and I could smell the milky moon and the hardness of stars. I pushed the uniform into a centrifuge machine I'd built in my ninth-grade shop that year, set it whirling. Soon a fine powder precipitated into a retort. This I slid under a microscope. And while my parents slept unaware, and while our house was asleep [...], I stared down upon brilliant motes of meteor dust, comet tail, and loam from Jupiter glistening like worlds themselves which drew me down the tube a billion miles into space, at terrific accelerations.
At dawn, exhausted with my journey and fearful of discovery, I returned the boxed uniform to their sleeping room."

"When I read the news, no," she said.
"When I see small children, yes. When I listen to talk radio, no.
When I fly on a plane, yes.
When I take Amtrak and go through North Philadelphia and see how people have to live, no.
When I sit in my kitchen in the winter with coffee and watch the sunrise, yes."
--John Kenny, "I See You've Called In Dead", The character 'Clara' when asked if she believed in God. -

How indeed? 🙁
Context: The character Indra on being trapped into a crew aboard a fishing vessel as a slave laborer and subsequently murdering one of his guards."How was I to know there was a hole in the world that I could fall through, like falling through an open manhole? That I could fall right through that story in the news, and end up on the other side, on a planet I don't even recognize? And become a person I don't recognize."

This is a brutal dissection of Nolan's Oppenheimer from the perspective of narrative and story telling.
It's a masterclass on what matters when writing a story, for films or books or anything. It's also delivered with razor sharp intellect.

Enjoying precious but simple insight into the way we all do life from my #currentread, Tom Lake by Ann Patchett:
“But what about the play?” Emily asks, her impossible legs over the back of the couch. Emily has never been able to sit on furniture like a normal person. I lost the fight when she was still a child. Whoever installed her interior compass put the magnet in upside down.”

“Like all Netflix movies, Bubble and The Bubble floated away as quickly as they appeared, becoming tiles in the company’s sprawling mosaic of content, destined to be autoplayed on laptops whose owners have fallen asleep.” #GoodWriting

Tonight was a re-learning experience of how much the game has changed from LWS1 to now. Scarlet was really well done and pretty fleshed out. Hope we can get another really good story like that again some day.
