  5. The BBC running damage control on its own broadcast is wild to witness. The most egregious part of the affair to me is that no one from BAFTA or the BBC even bothered to apologize to Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo when they got off the stage, let alone tell *them* what was going to be done about it. There was no effort to bring the three people involved together for resolution at the time of the incident, nothing.

But the other part of this that just grates on me with every article is the BBC trying to defend itself by saying “that another racial slur had been edited out of the broadcast.”
    bbc.com/news/articles/cg4g2lde

Are they seriously patting themselves on the back for getting something right.... oh but wait... they don't actually identify what that "racial slur” was.

The only thing I have been able to find mention of that was also removed from the broadcast was someone shouting:

Free Palestine! (uttered by a black man... but i digress)
    (variety.com/2026/film/awards/b)

Now... I've consulted Oxford Dictionary. And from every entry on the page for "slur”(oed.com/dictionary/slur_n3?tab

It refers to a term that applies to, identifies and denigrates an individual person or persons directly. I cannot think of any racial slur that does not follow this pattern. It is generally an adjective or a noun, or an adjective morphed into a noun. It's not a statement, like "Free Palestine” which is a combination of two common and clear words into a statement or rallying cry.

I do not understand in the least how this can be construed as a “racial slur” against any group at all on anywhere near the same level as the n-word.

A direct or indirect statement that might be controversial to a person can be a 'slur’ in a very broad sense, sure, but there has to also be a common understanding here of a ladder of harm.

“Eat Mushy Peas!” might be offensive to people who prefer raw carrots. They might even consider it a “slur”. But this would be very different from calling said raw carrot eaters the n word.

    Definitions of "Slur” in OED:
"1.a. 1609–A deliberate slight; an expression or suggestion of disparagement or reproof.”

"1888 A district would think it a slur to be told that it ought to look beyond its own borders for a representative.”

"1888 I have tried faithfully to furnish you with all the slang, and slurs of any note in use at the present time.”

"2022 [She] swore up and down she wasn’t racist till she got mad at me this one time, then it was every racial slur in the book, come outta her mouth.”

Will the BBC be editing out any 'outbursts" of the word "Genocide" if uttered by a person who may also support a Free Palestine?

It seems that these days common language from UN resolutions (Palestine) and International Law (Genocide) are being treated as if they are a “racial slur” and I deeply question the moral and factual basis for this.

It smells more like a disinformation operation.
