  1. NiziU -- Too Bad
    youtu.be/b_GqrwmptWo?si=2XpCHz

Although Nick James of thebiaslist.com, whose pop music taste is not a million miles away from mine, was decidedly lukewarm about this track in his weekly Jpop round up, I must say I love it - it's a great piece of dance pop. It's catchy, with a beat that you just have to move to, and in the final chorus there is ad libbing and a kick in of percussion to make the whole track satisfying.

The MV works well too. It's crammed with detail, so worth replaying with pauses, but doesn't seem cluttered; the co-ordination of colour and outfits helps keep it together. The choreography, executed with the help of back up dancers, is as good as that of a Kpop group.

In fact, this MV exists in that sweet spot where Korean and Japanese idol pop meet. I love it, I love it, I love it!

  2. Thank you @Erzbet for stepping up once again to organize #KpopMonday

For the theme #MirrorMirror , I'm going back some years to the time when Lovelyz were singing "How To Be A Pretty Girl".

  3. Fromis_9 -- Miniskirt
    youtu.be/C32XiyRpUtI?si=I4FYo5

I've never been quite as thrilled by "'Miniskirt" as have so many girl group stans.

I'm not quite sure why this is. I have no puritanical objection to the "Sexy Concept". It's just not one of my favourite pieces of music. "Miniskirt" always seems teenage boy to me.

Although I like fromis_9 a lot, I don't think this stage is the best. Shouldn't they all be wearing miniskirts?

Chaeyoung, as always, looks great, but some of her moves seem stiff and awkward to me.

    Let's not talk about Jiwon's spectacles/ Megan's glasses.

I'm sure the Sexy Concept will survive any nitpicking from me, but I don;'t want to be an insincere Kpop fan.

GFRIEND -- Me Gustas Tu -- JP version
    youtu.be/Q_8YONoUqRw?si=5JTd7D

I can't resist posting another GFriend MV. This Japanese version of "Me Gustas Tu" has a high school setting absent in the Korean original.

Overall, I actually prefer this Japanese version. GFriend's sound was Jpop influenced, and the girls look so much better here than they did in the Korean MV.

Globalization was at work in this MV, in which a Korean girl group sing a Spanish titled song in Japanese, while in the school nearly all the text shown is in English.

  5. For my second #KpopMonday post on this year's #SkoolLuvAffair theme , I'm choosing the recently released and delightfully effervescent

    Hearts2Hearts -- Style
    youtu.be/n7kFRxFIPrI?si=Db8lkb

Although this differs from Girl's Day --Don't Forget Me in all sorts of ways, the newer MV does, like the older one, feature the hands in the air punishment.

I understand that this sort of punishment is no longer allowed in Korean schools. Perhaps its depiction in MVs is akin to British schools being represented with cane wielding, mortar board wearing schoolmasters -- an ananchronism being used to evoke nostalgia amongst adults, to stimulate "school story" fantasizing amongst teens, and to represent the otherwise hard to depict school discipline system in general.

  6. Thanks to @Erzbet for organizing #KpopMonday on the theme of #skoolluvaffair

I'm going to make two MV posts on this theme, one featuring an old song and the other a much more recent release.

    First, the old one:

    Girl's Day -- Don't Forget Me
    youtu.be/_H7ZG7yk5Wo?si=LsHdSW

For many of us, mention of Girl's Day now will bring to mind their sexy concept songs like "Expectation" and "Something".

But they did other things too, as this MV shows. I really like the music!

Notice how the school sections of the MV feature the "hands in the air " punishment. I think - I'm not sure - that this was on the way out when this MV was released in 2012.
