KATSEYE -- Animal
https://youtu.be/m7k9UMcHbr0?si=fp-tfzhjlXX8yamjThe other day I posted that I was newly open to KATSEYE on the strength of the "Animal" teaser, so now that the MV is here I feel I should post my opinion.
The good: I should say "better", as having the members actually singing marks a huge improvement as far as I am concerned over the awful "Gnarly" and "Pinky Up", but the song is not that interesting. Still, I am pleased that they have gone for the melodic.
A lot of people have noted the homage to "Bound", that super erotic 1996 neonoir from the Wachowskis. As I watched the MV, I was also reminded of the conceptually similar but musically superior WJSN The Black -- Easy.
The mystifying: I couldn't follow the plot, if there even was one, of the MV, and was both surprised and puzzled by the sudden appearance of Demi Moore. Perhaps there is some KATSEYE or more general pop culture joke or reference here which has not registered with me.
The bad: If I told you that "thighs" and "spicy" applied to a sequence of the MV, you would probably give me a knowing wink; little would you know that I was referring to the thighs to be found in the Jollibees Chickenjoy Bucket served with the signature spicy gravy, all on display in the MV starting at 1:54.
When it comes to product placement in an MV, some consideration has to be given to the matching of product and overall concept. The high end audio of Bose fits with the glamorous aspirations of "Animal", but nothing could be further from that glamour than a fast food fried chicken meal deal. Jollibees is less sharp suits, sexy lingerie, and high heels than graphic tees, baggy shorts, and flipflops.
Th ugly: Those bleached eyebrows! Daniela ( I think that's her name) looks like something from a horror film.
In general: better than their most recent releases, but not something I will be saving to my playlist.

I'm not quite sure why this is. I have no puritanical objection to the "Sexy Concept". It's just not one of my favourite pieces of music. "Miniskirt" always seems teenage boy to me.
Although I like fromis_9 a lot, I don't think this stage is the best. Shouldn't they all be wearing miniskirts?
Chaeyoung, as always, looks great, but some of her moves seem stiff and awkward to me.
Let's not talk about Jiwon's spectacles/ Megan's glasses.
I'm sure the Sexy Concept will survive any nitpicking from me, but I don;'t want to be an insincere Kpop fan.

The KIss Of Life "Birthday Live" video understandably alienated many international fans, nor have I ever been that enthusiastic about them in spite of their obvious talents, yet I do think they were the right group to cover " Bad Girl Good Girl".

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen izna – Racecar.
A difficult choice this week, but I finally settled on this “Racecar” stage.
The song does not have a fully sung chorus, but I am not one of those who make it an inflexible rule to damn the “empty chorus” The prechorus works very well, and I like the vocals. I do wish the song had been extended.
I chose this stage because a restrained use of colour achieved that “unity without uniformity” look which I find so appealing. Kpop does not have to be all eyepopping colour and more of everything.

Hearts2Hearts -- Jiwoo
I have really enjoyed Hearts2Hearts "The Chase " and "Butterflies", so I am at once excited but also a little anxious about their comeback which is supposed to be in June.
I don't need to explain my excitement, but I should say that my anxiety springs from the disappointment that all too often follows an eagerly awaited comeback. We'll just have to see.
I did read that the comeback is rumoured to be a cover of ....

This was their final comeback before their disbandment. It's entertaining, but by no means up to the standard of the best of their earlier songs.
What it does have, though, is a water fight sequence with water guns that begins at 2:01!

I was looking forward to this BBGIRLS release and was not disappointed by the city pop sound, the urbane midtempo maturity of which suits this group so well. There was so much to love about the outfits here too, not least the colour coordination. I just wish the song were longer!

The Latin sound made this the first KIOF song to appeal to me; I just wish more of the lyrics had been in Spanish too.
I think I’m right in saying that this girl group has developed a solid female fanbase, which bodes well for the group’s longevity, given that women as fans are less fickle and more materially supportive than men. I wonder what KIOF’s particular appeal to young women is.
