Although I've been tempted to list this as #KpopOfTheWeek, I will resist that temptation because it's still Jpop, even though heavily influenced by Kpop and featured at KCON Japan.
The use of strings and melody here appeals to my inner Christian Horse Girl.* I also enjoyed much of the "Quartet" album too. I like the direction the group have taken, as I did not much care for some their earlier stuff.
Both IS:SUE and ME:I, another Jpop group I quite like, emerged from PRODUCE 101 JAPAN THE GIRLS. It's not surprising they appeal to this Kpop fan.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen SEEYA -- Stay.
This old Kpop group is new to me. I enjoyed their singing, was charmed by dancer /choreographer Aiki (is she famous?) combining the elegant and the humorous, and was refreshed by a song unburdened by the unmelodic.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Billlie – ZAP.
When I first heard ZAP, I did not really care for it because it has an aespa/Everglow girlcrush sound that does not usually appeal to me that much.
However, after playing the MV a number of times, I’ve found that ZAP has grown on me. Perhaps this change on my part illustrates what psychologists call the repeated exposure effect.
But why was I replaying the MV before the onset of that repeated exposure effect?
The visuals! Although long hair offers all sorts of styling and hairography opportunities and often looks beautiful, I am almost always thrilled to see idols with shorter hair. So I was delighted that the MV features both the auburn Siyoon and the dark haired Moon Sua with short hair.
In addition, the overall look of the MV appealed to me. The black and the red, the outfits, and the overall simplicity of the MV -- perhaps the beneficial consequence of a tight budget enforcing visual discipline – all provided me with visual pleasure.
Nothing Billie has done has ever impressed me as much as RING X RING , and ZAP has no chance of displacing that striking debut in my affections. In fact, it’s not even in the running for my Song Of The Year. Nevertheless, I’m happy I can answer “Yes!” to Haruna’s closing “Can you feel it?”

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen NMIXX – Crescendo.
I’ve played this a number of times and am still enjoying the quality and arrangement of the vocals and the delightful quirkiness provided by the pauses and instrumental. Oddly enough, I don’t hear a big crescendo here.
I don’t know enough about western pop to understand where NMIXX fit into the larger pop music landscape, but I do think JYP deserve credit for neither sticking rigidly to the group’s initial sound nor then having them conform to whatever happened to be the girl group style of the moment but instead allowing the group’s distinctive artistic identity to evolve.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen ifye -- Padam Padam.
Why was this not the title track rather than the uninspiring "Hazy (Daisy)"?
Perhaps the agency worried that the conservative broadcasters of Korea might find "Wanna do it with me? / Padam, padam /Padam-pa, boom, boom" overly suggestive.
Obviously any fear of that nature was groundless, as we can see from this Idol Unplugged stage.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Runaway -- Just Dance -- Genie .
One of the things I love about Kpop is its sheer abundance. Not only do lots of groups release lots of music with a frequency that makes the western pop industry look miserly, but most releases will have, on account of music show performances, dance practice videos , and so on, a multiplicity of versions.
So after my last week's posting of the RESCENE -- Runaway MV as #KpopOfTheWeek and midweek postings of music show stages, I come now to this wonderful video in which the simplicity of set and styling allow the group to engage us to the full through their dancing.
The original MV was one that I enjoyed because of its dream like blend of school story and fantasy. Yet I also like this performance video for the reason that I so often enjoy videos of this type; they allow me to pull away from the specifics of narrative and concept and be enchanted instead by the sight and sound of performance.
The outfits facilitate this enchantment, and I am relieved that this video shows the girls not to be under the heel of the #BigClumpyBoot lobby!

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Runaway.
Although this past week I have been enjoying Kpop from a number of groups, the song that stands out to me is the RESCENE comeback.
From the opening guitar and synthesizer, through the contrasting first and second choruses, to that emancipated dance break in the forest just before they head out to see the sun rise -- everything about this MV is magical!

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen CSR – Can’t Hide Anymore.
After a long absence, CSR came back recently with “Can’t Hide Anymore” and an awful AI generated MV. This stage is the best looking of the promotion. Although the music is not up to the standard of their early releases, “ Can’t Hide Anymore” remains an engaging piece of cute girl group Kpop, free of “bad ass” pretensions or attempts to pander to western tastes.
If you want to delve deeper into CSR, remember to add “Kpop” as a search term if you do not want to be inundated with material about corporate social responsibility.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Baby DONT Cry -- Bittersweet.
I'm enjoying a lot of the Kpop being promoted at the moment, but this week "Bittersweet" with its agreeably memorable chorus has given me the most pleasure.
I was going to post the performance video, but I saw this Inkigayo stage this morning and preferred the outfits.
Quite often I prefer performance videos and stages to MVs, as these allow me not only to enjoy the choreo but also to decouple song and dance from specific narratives In which I have no wish to immerse myself.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen H1-KEY – To My First Love.
I doubt that “To My First Love” will be my Song Of The Year, but it has definitely grown on me since its initial release. The combination of energetic pop rock with vocals forceful yet cheerful has won me over. In addition, these outfits on M Countdown are the best the girls have worn for this comeback.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Yena – Catch Catch.
Once upon a time I would have been sniffy about a song like this, but Orange Caramel years later I <apply vocal processing> ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
The outfits are super duper too!
But wait! There’s more….

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen IVE – Blackhole.
I've chosen this because I've had the song on my brain, I like the outfits, and I'm pleased that my liking this song provides me with an opportunity for posting a video with my bias Ahn Yujin giving it her all.
If you're not sure who Yujin is...

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen WJSN – Bloom Hour. What a difficult decision it was this week!I had to choose between “Rude” stages, RESCENE, IVE, but I finally settled on WJSN – Bloom Hour. I ‘m not going to complain about being spoiled for choice, especially after an opening to the year in which offerings seemed sparse.
“Bloom Hour” is WJSN’s first comeback in almost four years. I was looking forward to the release because the 2018 "Save Me, Save You" delighted me, and this delight has not faded as I have explored both their prior and subsequent releases, not withstanding the tension that developed when they competed against LOONA, another group that I followed, during “Queendom”.
Consequently, “Bloom Hour” means a lot to me, a sentiment reinforced by the valedictory sound of the song and implications of the lyrics. Nevertheless, I recognize that it is not the best track they have ever released; although I like the song, I did feel that the instrumentation felt weak as the first verse opened. My spirits were lifted by the chorus, and I absolutely loved the final, very third generation, bridge and final chorus with ad libs.
I wonder how this song comes across to somebody who isn’t familiar with WJSN, which in turn raises questions in my mind of a more general nature, regarding the part played by prior knowledge and expectation in our perception and judgment of art.
I’ve seen a good deal of criticism online of the video as looking “cheap”, especially when compared with “Blackhole”, the release this week from their agency Starship’s currently most popular girl group, IVE. I liked the “Bloom Hour” video, because I do not equate a big budget with artistic excellence; I thought that the studio and dressing room scenes suited the song, and I enjoyed that final transition to a flowery hillside which was the subject of online nitpicking. I do wonder, though, how WJSN feel about Starship’s relegating them when compared with IVE; perhaps they just accept this as the natural course of events in the life of idols, perhaps they are more concerned with their own individual careers in drama and musicals, or perhaps they feel hurt at being cast aside. I suppose we’ll never know.
I do know that the members of WJSN are some of the most beautiful idols in Kpop. Everybody looks gorgeous in their own way here, and my only complaint is that neither Luda nor Dawon were able to lend either their visuals or their voices to “Bloom Hour”.
But wait! There’s more….
