  1. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen KiiiKiii -- Pop Off Pop Off.

This might not be music for the ages, but it is mostly fun for its just under two and a half minutes of duration; I love the build up to the chorus, but what comes just after the chorus not so much...

Although I often post stages or performance videos for #KpopOfTheWeek, I've chosen the MV this week for a pair of reasons. In the first place, I loved all the Apple oojamacallits in the first half of the video, and then delighted in all those Sicilian locations in the following section. Then, watching a live stage, I found myself thinking that the song really needs the visual support; it comes across to me as somewhat insubstantial otherwise.

  2. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Billlie – ZAP.

When I first heard ZAP, I did not really care for it because it has an aespa/Everglow girlcrush sound that does not usually appeal to me that much.

However, after playing the MV a number of times, I’ve found that ZAP has grown on me. Perhaps this change on my part illustrates what psychologists call the repeated exposure effect.

But why was I replaying the MV before the onset of that repeated exposure effect?

The visuals! Although long hair offers all sorts of styling and hairography opportunities and often looks beautiful, I am almost always thrilled to see idols with shorter hair. So I was delighted that the MV features both the auburn Siyoon and the dark haired Moon Sua with short hair.

In addition, the overall look of the MV appealed to me. The black and the red, the outfits, and the overall simplicity of the MV -- perhaps the beneficial consequence of a tight budget enforcing visual discipline – all provided me with visual pleasure.

Nothing Billie has done has ever impressed me as much as RING X RING , and ZAP has no chance of displacing that striking debut in my affections. In fact, it’s not even in the running for my Song Of The Year. Nevertheless, I’m happy I can answer “Yes!” to Haruna’s closing “Can you feel it?”

  3. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen XG – Hypnotize.

Although I wouldn’t put XG in my top tier of groups, I’ve definitely been warming up to them since the release of “Gala” last year. The MV for “Hypnotize” is striking, but I’ve chosen this stage because dancing seems appropriate for the disco/house/club sound. Chisa looks great, especially with her pink pixie cut!

  4. I've been posting a lot about Kpop recently.

This frequency was not my original plan when I started on Mastodon. In fact, I started #KpopOfTheWeek with a resolution to confine my kpop posting to this once a week schedule. By limiting myself, I hoped to achieve three objectives.

In the first place, I hoped not to swamp the timelines of people who follow me but who have no interest in kpop. I also wanted to put a ceiling on the amount of time I was devoting to idols, comebacks, choreo videos and all the rest of it. Finally, I hoped that forcing myself to pick out just one MV or stage each week would oblige me to discriminate in the best sense of that word: to make thoughtful and careful choices.

My plan for self restraint hasn't quite worked out; as the charmingly unidiomatic title of that excellent Twice song puts it, "I Can't Stop Me". I dread to think how many non kpop fans have muted or blocked me, and I do worry at times about the hours I am devoting to kpop. On the other hand, I have found that selecting just one YouTube for #KpopOfTheWeek and writing a line or two to explain my choice has helped me think more clearly about my Kpop preferences and has saved me from mindless thumbs uppery.

Aaah! I had to get all that off my chest. Now please enjoy the Twice Studio Choom!

  5. Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Weeekly – Lights On.

I know I featured this song very recently, but I have to be honest and say that I love these outfits. Together with the song, they give us a stage as crisply refreshing as a lemon sorbet.

  6. Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Weeekly -- Lights On.

Of all the “Summer Queen” releases this year, “Lights On” is the one I have enjoyed the most, the chorus exercising a melodic appeal to me. I quite like the MV, but I absolutely adore this nautically styled M Countdown stage.

  7. Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out the music video or performance I liked best. This week I have chosen Weeekly – Vroom Vroom.

The discoish, vaguely citypopish, and at times wistful sound appeals to me, as did the restrained vocals; this is kpop for grown ups! Although the MV had its moments, I found it disappointingly incoherent. Consequently, I’ve linked to this showcase stage, which has its own YouTube visual problems but nevertheless shows off the choreography and outfits well.
