  1. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen izna -- R.I.P.

I haven't watched much Kpop this week, but I did manage to catch this nice pop rock B side from izna. Let's not get into a footwear discussion...

  2. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Hearts2Hearts -- Lemon Tang -- Music Core 952.

I like this, but I don't love it. In fact, it's probably my least favourite H2H title track. Nevertheless, those prechorus sections with Yuha and Stella are pure gold. The summery outfits for this stage are just right.

  3. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen STAYC – 2 LOVE -- Inkigayo 260621.

Everything one might expect and want from a Kpop summer track. I was going to post the 1TheK performance video, but then I saw this stage and was taken by Seeun's bob and the pale yellows of her outfit.

  4. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Billlie – ZAP.

When I first heard ZAP, I did not really care for it because it has an aespa/Everglow girlcrush sound that does not usually appeal to me that much.

However, after playing the MV a number of times, I’ve found that ZAP has grown on me. Perhaps this change on my part illustrates what psychologists call the repeated exposure effect.

But why was I replaying the MV before the onset of that repeated exposure effect?

The visuals! Although long hair offers all sorts of styling and hairography opportunities and often looks beautiful, I am almost always thrilled to see idols with shorter hair. So I was delighted that the MV features both the auburn Siyoon and the dark haired Moon Sua with short hair.

In addition, the overall look of the MV appealed to me. The black and the red, the outfits, and the overall simplicity of the MV -- perhaps the beneficial consequence of a tight budget enforcing visual discipline – all provided me with visual pleasure.

Nothing Billie has done has ever impressed me as much as RING X RING , and ZAP has no chance of displacing that striking debut in my affections. In fact, it’s not even in the running for my Song Of The Year. Nevertheless, I’m happy I can answer “Yes!” to Haruna’s closing “Can you feel it?”

  5. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Runaway -- Just Dance -- Genie .

One of the things I love about Kpop is its sheer abundance. Not only do lots of groups release lots of music with a frequency that makes the western pop industry look miserly, but most releases will have, on account of music show performances, dance practice videos , and so on, a multiplicity of versions.

So after my last week's posting of the RESCENE -- Runaway MV as #KpopOfTheWeek and midweek postings of music show stages, I come now to this wonderful video in which the simplicity of set and styling allow the group to engage us to the full through their dancing.

The original MV was one that I enjoyed because of its dream like blend of school story and fantasy. Yet I also like this performance video for the reason that I so often enjoy videos of this type; they allow me to pull away from the specifics of narrative and concept and be enchanted instead by the sight and sound of performance.

The outfits facilitate this enchantment, and I am relieved that this video shows the girls not to be under the heel of the #BigClumpyBoot lobby!

  6. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Runaway.

Although this past week I have been enjoying Kpop from a number of groups, the song that stands out to me is the RESCENE comeback.

From the opening guitar and synthesizer, through the contrasting first and second choruses, to that emancipated dance break in the forest just before they head out to see the sun rise -- everything about this MV is magical!

  7. 🧵 1/2

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen IVE – Blackhole.

I've chosen this because I've had the song on my brain, I like the outfits, and I'm pleased that my liking this song provides me with an opportunity for posting a video with my bias Ahn Yujin giving it her all.

If you're not sure who Yujin is...

  8. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Hearts2Hearts – Rude.

Loved everything about the chorus and Carmen and Ye-on's parts. In general I enjoy the bouncy, ultimately disco derived house sound. I wish they had gone a little lighter on the rap and I am afraid that Stella's English passage was a painful reminder that I am not in the target market.

The MV has a lot going on but does not feel cluttered to me. Lots of great outfits, but my favourites were the tennis dresses.

Overall, I liked "Rude" a lot and can see why this bright sound works for them; it works for this fan too!

Yet I must say that I hope that they will return at some point to the more mysterious atmosphere of "The Chase".

No doubt when it comes to my opinion though, SM couldn't even care less...

  9. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen XG – Hypnotize.

Although I wouldn’t put XG in my top tier of groups, I’ve definitely been warming up to them since the release of “Gala” last year. The MV for “Hypnotize” is striking, but I’ve chosen this stage because dancing seems appropriate for the disco/house/club sound. Chisa looks great, especially with her pink pixie cut!

  10. Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Hearts2Hearts – Pretty Please.

This prerelease was a nice surprise to have before the comeback proper in October. I liked the song itself, so very SM girl group in its sound, and particularly enjoyed the singing of Yuha, Carmen, and Ye-on. Although the first rap fitted in so well, the second did not, or at least not to my ears. I was also slightly disappointed that the production for this cute song did not have smooth purity heard in “The Chase”; what was that male voice doing? I’ve heard that effect before, although I can’t remember where exactly. Probably somebody who knows more about music production than I do can say more about this.

I chose this stage because I like seeing the full choreography and the stylist did not incorporate those hideous overalls that have disfigured other “Pretty Please” stages. A-na looked especially pretty in the celadon top and with her hair up.
