    @pixelcats

Thank you for setting up #KpopMonday with this #EarlyOrLate theme.

    MONSTA X -- DRAMARAMA
    youtu.be/r1afdZk0qcI?si=DQaQaU

The guitar riff grips me along with the dramamarama vocals as I watch this time travel MV.

Speaking of travel, I'm going to be away for a week without my laptop, so I won't be listening to Kpop, doing #KpopOfTheWeek or #KpopMonday, boosting toots and all that.

Now which MV does that bring to mind that also happens to fit this week's theme? Hmmm.....

  2. @alsvha

A lot of 4th and 5th generation groups that I like have already been mentioned.

Here are three more for you to try:

    Kep1er
"Shooting Star" was my 2024 Song Of The Year, "Galileo" is lots of fun, and "Back To The City" is one of my favourite Kpop B sides. Lots of other good stuff too, as well as some of more dubious quality.
    kprofiles.com/kep1er-discograp

    RESCENE
They have recently exploded in popularity in South Korea. Try "YoYo", 'Love Attack", and the excedllent B side "Pinball". I have loved just about everything these girls have done from the moment they first appeared on the scene.
    kprofiles.com/rescene-discogra

    VIVIZ
All three members belonged to that wonderful group GFriend, but VIVIZ established its own identity. They have been mired in a contract dispute recently, but there are signs they will resurface soon. Amongst my favourite tracks are "La La Love me", "Untie", and "Love Love Love".

If you go through my #KpopOfTheWeek posts, you'll see these and many other currently active groups that I like, some of whom might appeal to you.

  3. #KpopOfTheWeek

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen HEARTS2HEARTS -- 15--LOVE -- On The Spot Performance Video .

Feeling Juun's energy as her forceful dancing opened the performance , I was immediately hooked. Carmen's and Stella's vocals, Ye-on's prechorus with the strings, the brass and the rock guitars as we move to the final chorus -cum-outro -- it's great and thoroughly addictive.

So why wasn't I hooked when I first heard the album track? I can't give a full answer, but the power of performance and prettiness to shape my response to the music is undeniable. As well as being impressed as always by Juun's dancing, I was struck by how well the On The Spot videography served this performance. I was also pleased to see the coordination of colour and pattern in the outfits . Everybody looked pretty of course, but I was particularly taken with Carmen. Kudos to her and to Yuha for dancing in heels; I wish we saw that more often.

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Odd Youth -- can't go back -- Performance Video.

Before I listened to the song, I read that producers Sweetune had "updated their sound", so I felt anxious about what I was going to hear. My worries were groundless, as what I hear is a melodically strong and delightfully memorable pop song.

I chose this performance video because I like seeing the choreography. In addition, the combination of the members' various white and blue outfits in the blue setting delighted me.

  5. @crookedcuc12

Funny that you should mention this stage, as I watched it a while after I had made the #KpopOfTheWeek post and , like you, was struck by the styling and especially the hair.

I thought about amending my post, but the decided not to, because I don't want to get into the habit of continually rewriting #KpopOfTheWeek.

You're right to note those deep voices. Do you particularly enjoy hearing those few idols who have rather deeper voices?

So yes, a good stage. They are all pretty, of course, but isn't Kya absolutely beautiful here?

  6. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen KiiiKiii -- Pop Off Pop Off.

This might not be music for the ages, but it is mostly fun for its just under two and a half minutes of duration; I love the build up to the chorus, but what comes just after the chorus not so much...

Although I often post stages or performance videos for #KpopOfTheWeek, I've chosen the MV this week for a pair of reasons. In the first place, I loved all the Apple oojamacallits in the first half of the video, and then delighted in all those Sicilian locations in the following section. Then, watching a live stage, I found myself thinking that the song really needs the visual support; it comes across to me as somewhat insubstantial otherwise.

  7. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Ji Won -- Call Me Up.

Ji Won, formerly of Cherry Bullet, with a charmingly catchy pop song. An effective opening with the chorus and a nice build in the prechorus win me over. The stylist has used red and navy blue to good effect in Ji Won's outfit.

I note that the song was composed by Anna Lindgren, the Finland Swede who also worked on TWICE -- The Feels, Kep1er -- Giddy, and many other Kpop hits. Why are these Nordic countries such fertile grounds for pop music?

I've chosen to feature this stage because I don't like the MV one bit. It's not because it's AI; -- I still haven't sorted out what I think about that technology -- but on account of it being just an animation. What was stopping the agency producing something with Ji Won herself? I also have to say that I do not love the chibi influenced style of the MV.

  8. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen KARD -- Back To Life -- Simply K-Pop.

I found myself getting teary as I listened to this farewell -- or should it be hasta siempre? - song from KARD. I haven't enjoyed their recent releases that much, so I was gratified to hear them going back to a tropical house sound reminiscent of their earlier material.

I chose this stage because I like seeing the choreo, and the outfits are the best of all the stages and videos that I have seen.

It's a shame that they never broke through in a big way in South Korea. I hope they have derived a sense of achievement as well as monetary compensation from their success with Latin American fans.

Although I didn't understand every line of the song, I was moved by the themes of support and loyalty voiced in the song. Some might dismiss this aspect of the song as World Cup anthem corniness, but in an age where cruelty and faithlessness abound, I would rather accept this lyrical offer at face value than bind myself in the armour of cynicism and so make myself insensible to hope and human connection.

  9. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen aespa -- KISS N TELL.

I've enjoyed this more than most other aespa title tracks. The girls actually singing, the colourful MV, the "dee da da dee" combined with "I wanna kiss n tell", ad libs and outro - it's all quite lovely.

It's also another example of the wonders wrought by Korean-Japanese synergy.

I do love the MV, but I am also very keen to see the choreo in a performance video.

  10. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen BBGIRLS – Body Wave -- Performance Video.

Just about everything worked for me on this old style summer song from BBGIRLS; the only part I'm not sure was a good idea is the repetitive passage in the postchorus. But if that's the price for the delightful "No hesitation...Close connection" prechorus, I'll pay up.

The MV features lots of what I think are cameos from Korean entertainers, none of whom I recognize; I'm afraid most of the humour was lost on me. As is so often the case, I prefer the performance video. Although the choreography is nothing special, the members look great not in spite of but on account of their age; they're in their early to mid thirties, which is old only in Kpop terms. I hope to see more and more "older" idols continue performing, although I can understand that the idol lifestyle might well be less appealing at age thirty than at twenty.

  11. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Pretty Girl -- Idol Booth.

I've been following RESCENE from the very beginning, so I am delighted to see their popularity rocketing in South Korea. Their cover of Kara's "Pretty Girl" is such fun. The song's jaunty catchiness has always appealed to me, and RESCENE's voices sound good in this version.

I'm enjoying the MV and stages, but this Idol Booth video must be my favourite so far; the overall styling charmed me, bias LIv's hair being up and bias wrecker May's hair being bobbed delighted me, and the girls' cute marching put a ribbon on it!

  19. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a
music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I
    have chosen izna – Metronome.

What a wonderful comeback! The music clicked with me immediately, with the contrast between the two parts of the chorus being particularly striking and pleasing. I also liked that unexpected dance break. I'm going to have to learn names, as the members have nicely distinct voices. So far the only member I can name is Koko.

I often prefer performance versions to MVs, but here the MV is a winner. The musical contrast has a satisfying analogue in the visuals; look not just at the settings, but also the hairstyles, the outfits, and the make up. Everybody in their diverse ways looks gorgeous throughout.

Of course, the most immediately impressive part of the choreo is that for the first part of the chorus, but I must admit to being so taken with the girls dancing face to face then moving into a V formation in the second part of the first chorus (1:05 -- 1:11). The forest set dance conveys intimacy, grace, then power.

I've played the MV umpteen times and also enjoyed the music show stages, the performance version, the Studio Choom, and the B sides. My pleasure has also had the added spice of the unexpected, because although I had liked "Racecar' and "Timebomb", "Mamma Mia", their most recent title track, grated with me. How delightful to have low expectations so decidedly surpassed!

Unfortunately, it seems from what I read online that the clicking and purchasing public are less enthusiastic about this comeback. Let's hope sales pick up!

  20. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen tripleS – BabyFlower -- Suit Dance.

Even though I have delighted in the possibilities that large groups like LOONA or WJSN have been able to develop on account of the number of their members, the 24 strong tripleS is too big even for me. As for the Objekts, Seasons, Gravity , Cosmo and the various subunits ...no, it's all too much for me.

Casual listener though I am, I have enjoyed a number of their releases and I like this one very much. The anime influenced sound works well and this video shows off the choreography better than do the music show stages. I love the signature "la la la" and don't care if the concluding high note owes as much to vocal processing as it does to vocal prowess.

With regard to outfits, this suit dance provides variations on a restrained theme, a co-ordination without dull uniformity that I find appealing.

  21. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Heart Of Woman – Told U So.

Heart Of Woman took the bold step of debuting with a full length album, “Heart Byte Legacy”. After enjoying “Lost In Proof”, a title track with a pleasing older Kpop sound, I started listening to the album. “Told U So” immediately caught my attention. “Please let there be a performance video” I prayed, and this morning my prayer was answered. Will we be granted live performances in the coming weeks?

If you take pleasure in European Kpop connections, go to 1:11 and hear Liuyin, who was brought up by her Chinese family in Rome, sing in Italian.

Melodic, full of bright energy, great chorus, proper bridge, and a couple of nice ad libs as the song nears its close...what’s not to like about this comeback?

  24. 🧵 1/2

Although I've been tempted to list this as #KpopOfTheWeek, I will resist that temptation because it's still Jpop, even though heavily influenced by Kpop and featured at KCON Japan.

The use of strings and melody here appeals to my inner Christian Horse Girl.* I also enjoyed much of the "Quartet" album too. I like the direction the group have taken, as I did not much care for some their earlier stuff.

Both IS:SUE and ME:I, another Jpop group I quite like, emerged from PRODUCE 101 JAPAN THE GIRLS. It's not surprising they appeal to this Kpop fan.

  26. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Billlie – ZAP.

When I first heard ZAP, I did not really care for it because it has an aespa/Everglow girlcrush sound that does not usually appeal to me that much.

However, after playing the MV a number of times, I’ve found that ZAP has grown on me. Perhaps this change on my part illustrates what psychologists call the repeated exposure effect.

But why was I replaying the MV before the onset of that repeated exposure effect?

The visuals! Although long hair offers all sorts of styling and hairography opportunities and often looks beautiful, I am almost always thrilled to see idols with shorter hair. So I was delighted that the MV features both the auburn Siyoon and the dark haired Moon Sua with short hair.

In addition, the overall look of the MV appealed to me. The black and the red, the outfits, and the overall simplicity of the MV -- perhaps the beneficial consequence of a tight budget enforcing visual discipline – all provided me with visual pleasure.

Nothing Billie has done has ever impressed me as much as RING X RING , and ZAP has no chance of displacing that striking debut in my affections. In fact, it’s not even in the running for my Song Of The Year. Nevertheless, I’m happy I can answer “Yes!” to Haruna’s closing “Can you feel it?”

I’ve played this a number of times and am still enjoying the quality and arrangement of the vocals and the delightful quirkiness provided by the pauses and instrumental. Oddly enough, I don’t hear a big crescendo here.

I don’t know enough about western pop to understand where NMIXX fit into the larger pop music landscape, but I do think JYP deserve credit for neither sticking rigidly to the group’s initial sound nor then having them conform to whatever happened to be the girl group style of the moment but instead allowing the group’s distinctive artistic identity to evolve.

Why was this not the title track rather than the uninspiring "Hazy (Daisy)"?

Perhaps the agency worried that the conservative broadcasters of Korea might find "Wanna do it with me? / Padam, padam /Padam-pa, boom, boom" overly suggestive.

Obviously any fear of that nature was groundless, as we can see from this Idol Unplugged stage.

  29. Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen RESCENE – Runaway -- Just Dance -- Genie .

One of the things I love about Kpop is its sheer abundance. Not only do lots of groups release lots of music with a frequency that makes the western pop industry look miserly, but most releases will have, on account of music show performances, dance practice videos , and so on, a multiplicity of versions.

So after my last week's posting of the RESCENE -- Runaway MV as #KpopOfTheWeek and midweek postings of music show stages, I come now to this wonderful video in which the simplicity of set and styling allow the group to engage us to the full through their dancing.

The original MV was one that I enjoyed because of its dream like blend of school story and fantasy. Yet I also like this performance video for the reason that I so often enjoy videos of this type; they allow me to pull away from the specifics of narrative and concept and be enchanted instead by the sight and sound of performance.

The outfits facilitate this enchantment, and I am relieved that this video shows the girls not to be under the heel of the #BigClumpyBoot lobby!

Although this past week I have been enjoying Kpop from a number of groups, the song that stands out to me is the RESCENE comeback.

After a long absence, CSR came back recently with “Can’t Hide Anymore” and an awful AI generated MV. This stage is the best looking of the promotion. Although the music is not up to the standard of their early releases, “ Can’t Hide Anymore” remains an engaging piece of cute girl group Kpop, free of “bad ass” pretensions or attempts to pander to western tastes.

If you want to delve deeper into CSR, remember to add “Kpop” as a search term if you do not want to be inundated with material about corporate social responsibility.

I was going to post the performance video, but I saw this Inkigayo stage this morning and preferred the outfits.

Quite often I prefer performance videos and stages to MVs, as these allow me not only to enjoy the choreo but also to decouple song and dance from specific narratives In which I have no wish to immerse myself.

I doubt that “To My First Love” will be my Song Of The Year, but it has definitely grown on me since its initial release. The combination of energetic pop rock with vocals forceful yet cheerful has won me over. In addition, these outfits on M Countdown are the best the girls have worn for this comeback.

  34. 🧵 1/2

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Yena – Catch Catch.

Once upon a time I would have been sniffy about a song like this, but Orange Caramel years later I <apply vocal processing> ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

The outfits are super duper too!

    But wait! There’s more….

  35. Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Koi Kat – Wake Up Call.

This performance video popped up in my YouTube recommendations last week, a few days after the release of the MV proper. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though the dance music is nothing ground breaking. I also wondered if the “city hall” seen in the background is a real building or some kind of generated image.

Koi Kat has been on the idol scene for a few years with various stage names. It’s not just her tattoos and lip ring, -- overall she has a grittiness not commonly found in Kpop. Gritty or not, she appears to have attracted hardly any attention with this release. What do you think of “Wake Up Call”?

  36. 🧵 1/3

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen Fifty Fifty – Midnight Special.

Earlier this week I posted about Fifty Fifty – Midnight Special, linking to the MV:

    !
Not that long afterwards, I was thrilled to see this performance video.
Both the beat and the vocals appeal to me, and watching beautiful idols dressed in black dance to a song I like delights me. But wait (do they still have infomercials with these lines?), there’s more!

Who needs stage names when you have birth names like...
