I was going to caption this picture "Yujin chignon chic" which I think would work in French but not, alas, in English, where this particular hairstyle would be termed a bun rather than a chignon, which might be described as a bun on the nape of the neck -- in French, a chignon de cou.
Perhaps too, that original caption idea sacrificed accuracy in description for the sake of a pleasing sound when read aloud. When we think of a chic bun or chignon, we probably have in mind a style sleek and tightly controlled, as opposed to the messier look that complements the denim top Yujin wears here.
Anyway, doesn't Yujin look beautiful with her bun?

This stage show one idol wearing a cap and another in a pillbox hat. I strongly prefer the latter to the former. For me, the pillbox communicates elegance and style, whereas the cap evokes the everyday world of running errands on a bad hair day.
Although I have never and will never wear a cap like this, I can understand the cap's practical appeal. Yet this down to earth practicality damns this headwear style for me when it comes to styling for the Kpop stage.
I want a stage by virtue of song, dance, and styling to enchant me by dispelling the humdrum quotidian if only for a few minutes. The cap, with its suggestion of the casual and the careless does the very opposite. The pillbox casts a spell; the cap breaks it.

Unusually for a Studio Choom, this video features pictorial back projections.I usually appreciate the simplicity and absence of set decoration in Studio Choom, but I found myself enjoying these historic site pictures as the girls performed.
The heritage theme of these projections is echoed in the hanbok inspired outfits. Everybody looked good, but I was particularly struck by the sleeves on Yoon's jacket.
"RUN2U" must count as one of STAYC's best tracks, perhaps being not far behind the outstanding "So Bad".

Every weekend I look back at the preceding week in Kpop and pick out a music video or performance that have particularly liked. This week I have chosen tripleS – BabyFlower -- Suit Dance.
Even though I have delighted in the possibilities that large groups like LOONA or WJSN have been able to develop on account of the number of their members, the 24 strong tripleS is too big even for me. As for the Objekts, Seasons, Gravity , Cosmo and the various subunits ...no, it's all too much for me.
Casual listener though I am, I have enjoyed a number of their releases and I like this one very much. The anime influenced sound works well and this video shows off the choreography better than do the music show stages. I love the signature "la la la" and don't care if the concluding high note owes as much to vocal processing as it does to vocal prowess.
With regard to outfits, this suit dance provides variations on a restrained theme, a co-ordination without dull uniformity that I find appealing.

Even though I do not revel in I.O.I nostalgia to the same degree as do so many other fans, I am enjoying the "Suddenly" promotion, with the exception of their M Countdown 260521 live stage, marred as it was for me by outfits I found hideous .
The styling is a good deal better here. Not a #BigClumpyBoot to be seen, thank goodness!
The song itself has really grown on me in the past few days.

In this live stage one can hear that the two strongest vocalists are Minami (black jacket and black skirt) and Liv (argyle knit top and black skirt).
@pixelcats and I will just have to agree to disagree about the big clumpy boots, but I hope I'm not alone in admiring the stylist's coordination of the colours.
My bias Liv looks so good with that hairstyle.

I wish that Umji had kept her natural hair colour, as seen in the article illustration, for the Kazakh stage. The colouring there combined with the make up results in her looking washed out.

Overall , I think the designer Hwang Leesle successfully married elements of communal tradition to the individual tastes of three contemporary women.
I hope the audience appreciated the outfits. They certainly seemed to enjoy "Bop Bop". Perhaps some of those singing along there belonged to....

The uncertainty about the future must be difficult for them, and I imagine they also feel frustrated as they were almost certainly preparing for a comeback this spring.
This fan feels robbed of a VIVIZ comeback too, so I thought as consolation I would go back to a lesser known chapter of VIVIZ history, their performance in Kazakhstan.
I chose "Bop Bop" because I love that debut song of theirs. They also performed a number of GFriend songs, which I think VIVIZ have done either rarely or never otherwise; I decided not to post any of those because I found the absence of Yerin, Yuju, and Sowon jarring.
The modern hanbok outfits were a good choice for women appearing in Kazakhstan as both Kpop idols and cultural ambassadors. I learned a little about the creation of these outfits...

One of the things I love about Kpop is its sheer abundance. Not only do lots of groups release lots of music with a frequency that makes the western pop industry look miserly, but most releases will have, on account of music show performances, dance practice videos , and so on, a multiplicity of versions.
So after my last week's posting of the RESCENE -- Runaway MV as #KpopOfTheWeek and midweek postings of music show stages, I come now to this wonderful video in which the simplicity of set and styling allow the group to engage us to the full through their dancing.
The original MV was one that I enjoyed because of its dream like blend of school story and fantasy. Yet I also like this performance video for the reason that I so often enjoy videos of this type; they allow me to pull away from the specifics of narrative and concept and be enchanted instead by the sight and sound of performance.
The outfits facilitate this enchantment, and I am relieved that this video shows the girls not to be under the heel of the #BigClumpyBoot lobby!

So I feel oddly buzzed and will therefore create a thread about a stage from one of my favourite groups, RESCENE.

No such luck today. The boots they wear resemble some orthopedic footwear, or perhaps, just as bad if not worse, what visitors to Disneyland see on ...

This is a Kep1er track that I haven't posted before. The B side "Back To the City" is an absolute banger and should probably have been the title track, but I'm not choosing that today because I've posted it more than once before.
Over the years the kittenishness of "Giddy" has seduced me, so that I find myself playing it more than I would have imagined on its initial release.
This stage is my selection, even though Chaehyun couldn't dance, because the glitter and gloves glamour appeals to me so much more than the horrid athleisurey things they wore for the MV, PV, Studio Choom and so on.

This is a Kep1er track that I haven't posted before. The B side "Back To the City" is an absolute banger and should probably have been the title track, but I'm not choosing that today because I've posted it more than once before.
Over the years the kittenishness of "Giddy" has seduced me, so that I find myself playing it more than I would have imagined on its initial release.
This stage is my selection, even though Chaehyun couldn't dance, because the glitter and gloves glamour appeals to me so much more than the horrid athleisurey things they wore for the MV, PV, Studio Choom and so on.

Eunha is 28. Whatever happens to VIVIZ -- May it please be that they do not disband! -- I hope she stays on as an idol.
As I write so often about Eunha pictures, I love her hair in this photo! I have absolutely nothing against the flowing tresses of so many female idols, but I still think that a shorter style can look so chic.

I'd forgotten how addictive the bouncy bass of this song is, and I had also forgotten that this particular stage is a beret lover's dream. The choreography is a delight, with some moves that verge on the graceless but succeed in being charmingly quirky.

VIVIZIn a post that included some thoughts on Kpop idol footwear, I mentioned how much I disliked "the ugly overgrown foot look".
This look, I'm sad to say, has recently been sported by one of my favourite idols, Eunha, who is standing winking on the right.
What to my eyes is a less than lovely shoe style is, I suspect, one to which Eunha herself is actually partial. She quite often wears boots and shoes like this; although no doubt height equalization has something to do with the choice, Eunha probably enjoys enough seniority as an idol to be able to pick and choose, or at least exercise a veto, when it comes to styling. She could something more elegant.
She doesn't always put such horrors on her feet. I know that there have been some more graceful shoes in some recent stages, but...

IVE -- BLACKHOLE -- FAN CONCERT 260321

Let me begin by saying how much I like the song. Like many others, I'm taken by its epic sound, and the time signature switching engages my interest, as does the use of momentary silence. Without a doubt, this is the title track of theirs I like the best since "I AM".
On the other hand, this stage confirms in my mind a comment I made about the original release: the epic sound needs an epic stage, which most music shows and concerts cannot offer. The fan concert in this video cannot provide the sets this song demands. My hope is that IVE perform "Blackhole" at one of the end of the year shows with some over the top staging of a suitably magnificent scale and style.
In the post I made about the original MV, I noted that I did not like all of the outfits. I don't think these outfits are quite right either; the naval uniform was appropriate for the performance of "Genie" that they gave earlier in the show, but doesn't complement "Blackhole" in the same way.
I'll finish on a more positive note. IVE swapped the court shoes -- pumps, in American English -- they wore when performing "Genie" for the boots we see in the linked video. I gladly note that both the boots and the court shoes have heels.
Although I think idols can look so very elegant dancing in heels, I am not a fetishist; in fact, I'm happy to see not just stiletto boots but ballet flats too, Mary Janes or jazz shoes -- anything , in fact, that will give us a break from the ugly overgrown foot look that comes with so many wedges, platforms, and stomper boots. So I'll take this stage as a footwear win if nothing else! -
