David Lynch ist einer der bedeutendsten Regisseure der Filmgeschichte. Er schuf neue Bildwelten aus roten Vorhängen, nachtschwarzen Wohnzimmerecken, eigenartigen Lichtquellen, unheimlichen Fluren, Stimmen, die sich vom Körper lösen, und durch Soundkulissen, die ständiges Unbehagen auslösen. Die Räume, durch die wir schreiten, sind Reisen ins labyrinthisch aufgebaute Bewusstsein. Wer es sich zur Aufgabe macht, die David-Lynch-Filme zu ordnen, Stringenz und Linearität herstellen will, wird bald auf nicht lösbare Paradoxien treffen. David Lynch entzieht sich damit einer auf den Plot ausgerichteten Interpretation, was jedoch die Filme nicht beliebig werden lässt. Auffallend ist die Wiederkehr von Formen und Mustern und von Themen wie Ekel, Verwandlung und reale Imagination beziehungsweise imaginierte Realität. Schon in seinem Langfilmdebüt „Eraserhead“ finden wir dies, mit einem Umweg über „The Elephant Man“ führt Lynch uns auf den „Lost Highway“ und den „Mulholland Drive“. Im aktuellen DeepDive geht es um diese zutiefst irritierenden Meistwerke von David Lynch!
