Homelab update: time to move on from downstream clones!
Shifting all my workloads over to CentOS Stream with Podman. Living closer to upstream, containerizing everything, and probably breaking things in new and interesting ways.
Or maybe I go absolutely nuts and go all the way up to #Fedora!

Switched to Fedora (KDE) on my @tuxedocomputers InfinityBook 14, and it’s way better than the TuxedoOS in a few important regards:
The battery life no longer sucks. I get 3-4 hours instead of 1.5. I’m overall disappointed with the battery life but it is what it is. Just feels like a fresh fedora setup is better optimised for this machine somehow. That, and the OS was pre installed on the wrong ssd (the slow one), and u wonder if that contributed at all.
The audio works. The laptop shipped with non functional audio via its speakers. Headphones worked but the laptop by itself did not. It caused video to play slowly and stutter too, unless headphones were used.
I prefer the polish to Fedora over Tuxedo/Ubuntu OSes.. and now running it on the desktop too I get a lot of similar configs working for free.
If you own one of these machines and opted for preinstalled software, I highly recommend trying another OS.

Was ich bei Fedora so vermisse ist ein passabler GUI-Paketmanager wie Synaptic unter Debian/Ubuntu. Damit bin ich viele Jahre "groß geworden", seit dem Umstieg auf Fedora (KDE Plasma) vermisse ich das am meisten.
Discover finde ich mehr schlecht als recht, passt für Flatpaks und Updates aber sonst furchtbar.
Dnfdragora, das eigentlich Synaptic recht nahe kommt, funktioniert die halbe Zeit nicht - instabil ohne Ende, entweder lädt es die Liste gar nicht oder stürzt ab, mal früher mal später. Und wenn es mal funktioniert zeigt es mir nicht an was schon installiert ist und was nicht.

A Linuxban az a jó, hogy amikor már azt hiszed, végre minden működik… akkor kiderül, hogy csak eddig nem nézted a logokat.
De pont ez benne a szép. Nem egy fekete doboz, hanem egy rendszer, amit tényleg meg lehet érteni. Néha szívás, néha káromkodás, néha hajnali „na most már működj légyszi”, de amikor végül összeáll, az érzés verhetetlen.
És valahol ezért nehéz elszakadni tőle. Mert nem csak használod - hanem lassan kiismered. Aztán egyszer azon kapod magad, hogy már magadtól javítasz meg olyan dolgokat, amiktől pár éve még csak néztél volna üveges szemekkel.

I'm enjoying the recently added Mozilla RPM repository that includes Firefox Beta. Using it on Fedora.
I use both the Firefox and Thunderbird Betas. Both are very stable. I've used them for years. OTOH, I wouldn't do the nightlies, unless you're into that.
Nightlies are a step riskier than betas.

I did the Fedora upgrade last night to release 44. Trouble-free as usual. What a pleasure. 🐧
You can do graphical or CLI upgrade. I chose command line just for TF. Easy as copying and pasting the steps from the instructions page. There aren't many steps.
Nice things. Fedora and Linux Mint have been faves for a long time.

I guess a win for open-source and open-hardware in a way, my #FrameworkLaptop laptop had issues with recognising USB ports and there was a major boot issue with my operating system. #fedoralinux fixes the boot issue 'automagically', Linux has really progressed! I followed the guide to reset the motherboard on Framework's site, and now the USB ports work perfectly fine.

DNF5 + PackageKit integration making Discover incredibly snappy.
Native NTSYNC kernel module loaded and ready for even better performance in Proton gaming.

So I gave Fedora Kinoite a try, but it must not like my laptop because I just get a black screen after booting and no indication of what’s wrong. I’m guessing a problem with the graphics driver, because apparently that fucker is always fucked, but really, who knows? Could be anything.
Sigh. I guess Fedora ain’t the distro for me either, so back to the drawing board.
