CW: Rant about bugs in Gnome
Seriously #gnome don't you test your new apps?
1. "Papers" the new PDF viewer prints a single landscape page blatantly horizontal on the piece of paper, cutting off half of the contents, wasting paper and ink. While I can fix that *manually* for each print in the print dialog this was *never* an issue with the older Evince.
2. "Loupe" the new image viewer supposedly can rotate images. Well, it has a nice rotation animation but then the image snaps right back. Opened in "Eye of Gnome" everything works just fine 🤦♂️
3. Nautilus also had smaller issues after big updates, sometimes not refreshing after file operations or getting stuck with cut and paste. What happened to form follows function?
I'm done for today, don't even feel like reporting those bugs. (If anyone does: thank you, feel free to share the link ❤️ )
I'll switch back to evince&eog for now. They are still working fine thankfully.

Upgrading Fedora on my home desktop PC last night was a bit more exciting than usual. It's a bit of a Ship of Theseus PC and has gone through several hardware upgrades and many, many incremental distro upgrades since the last clean install, which appears to have been Fedora 31 from way back in 2019. These upgrades have generally gone smoothly, but after running the upgrade from Fedora 42 to 43 I was left with a computer where GDM would crash on startup, leaving me with an unresponsive black screen instead of a login prompt.
Fortunately a bit of searching led me to the root cause and the fix, and I was able to SSH in and get the machine working again. It's a bit of a corner case that only affects machines that were originally running Fedora 35 or older, and somehow missed the migration to authselect that should have happened automatically when upgrading to Fedora 36: https://discussion.fedoraproject.org/t/gdm-crashes-after-upgrade-to-fedora-43-due-to-authselect-migration/171961

Tinkering with Immutable Linux: How Cosmic Atomic Won Me Over
I have been doing a lot of reading and listening to YouTube videos about immutable distributions and why they might offer the most flexibility for developers and tinkerers like me. I have been experimenting with Fedora Silverblue, NixOS, and traditional distributions like Linux Mint, Ubuntu 24.04, and Fedora 43. I was looking for ways to use ten-year-old Dell All-in-one desktops in the local public library.
After my experimentation, I decided to stick with Cosmic Atomic because I really love the Cosmic desktop. In the past week, I’ve become more familiar with an immutable desktop and how it might fit into my workflow. One of the difficulties I have had is connecting my Brother MFC-L3780 laser printer to this new environment. Traditional Fedora and Linux Mint were easy for me to connect to and use for the occasional printing that I needed. But what about this new environment? I did some reading and research and went to the Brother website, where I downloaded the drivers and other necessary files. Study and reading informed me that I needed to download the driver install tool and the Linux printer driver. These are RPM files. I saved them in my Downloads folder.
The download was:
$ linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.6-0That file has to be executed to open the file containing the necessary RPM files. I had to change it to an executable file first.
$ chmod +x linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.6-0
Then execute the file:
$ sudo ./linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.6-0The resulting RPM files are:
mfcl3780cdwpdrv-3.5.1-1.i386.rpm
brscan5-1.3.10-5.x86_64.rpm
brscan-skey-0.3.2-0.x86_64.rpmEach of these is installed with rpm-ostree.
rpm-ostree mfcl3780cdwpdrv-3.5.1-1.i386.rpm
rpm-ostree brscan5-1.3.10-5.x86_64.rpm
rpm-ostree brscan-skey-0.3.2-0.x86_64.rpm$ rpm-ostree mfcl3780cdwpdrv-3.5.1-1.i386.rpmWe are now ready to install the printer using CUPS after it was installed:
Screen Picture by Don Watkins CC-by-SA 4.0http://localhost:631Getting my Brother MFC‑L3780 printer working was the final test. While it required a bit more manual effort than on traditional distributions, the process was straightforward once I understood how rpm‑ostree fits into the picture. With the correct drivers installed and CUPS configured, everything now works seamlessly. It’s reassuring to know that even in an immutable environment, I can still rely on the tools and hardware I need.
As I continue exploring what Cosmic Atomic can do, I’m feeling more confident that this setup strikes the right balance between stability, experimentation, and day‑to‑day practicality.

This one was a little bit tricky -- GUI updated did not work, so I tried start from terminal to debug. And looked like a couple of packages caused some issues so I removed them. After this updated went smoothly.
