Completely random idea that I got all of a sudden:
I want a label writer... so I ordered one!Dymo LetraTag LT-100H ☺️ with an additional plastic sticker roll since the device only comes with one paper sticker roll.
Not sure how common it is for people to have those at home (not at work) 😁
I did also have a look at some similarly cheap Brother P-touch model, but it eating up 6xAAA instead of 4xAA was the dealbreaker for me, so Dymo it is!

Anyway, it's quite amazing that this news is ignored and even the unions don't call for action. R&D is just gone:
- mechanical design of printers, cassettes and labels
- chemical specialists for labels and carbon
- electronics engineers
- firmware development, including the only ones who know how their NFC 'drm paper' works
No more new #Dymo printers in the next years and probably impact on label production 🤦
Brother, Zebra, Brady and others must be having a party. -

I have a Dymo LabelWriter 450 label printer. I use Linux and am a software engineer, so the easiest/best way (I thought) for me to create lots of labels programmatically was to generate bitmaps with the tools I'm familiar with, and dump them as images to the printer.
It "works", but if that was the whole story, I wouldn't be writing here.
A thread, looking for advice/experience.

CW: Impresoras con DRM
Para cierto tipo de ejecutivo corporativo, el negocio de la impresión es siempre tentador. Al fin y al cabo, estas máquinas requiren grandes cantidades de consumibles para funcionar, la máquina es sólo una parte del costo de trasladar ideas al soporte papel.
Pero ya una #impresora dejó de ser "excitante". A nadie le importa demasiado ya las características, y el mercado "se achanchó". Cada vez vale menos la pena "imprimir". Aceptémoslo: es un embole.
Sus consumibles son la tinta y el papel. Sería demasiado imponer reaseguros sobre la marca de papel de oficina a utilizar.
Pero los fabricantes no se conforman con concertar un mercado, y se avalanzan sobre la tinta. Lo real es que nadie en su sano juicio pagaría VOLUNTARIAMENTE 3.000 dólares por litro, cuando la fabricación de tinta pigmentada insume 12 dólares. Pero obligando a mantener un único proveedor mediante el envase (cartucho con chip de registro), intentan encadenar al consumidor que ya ha pagado la máquina.
El mercado de tintas no está concentrado ni verticalizado, de modo que no es de extrañar que existan miles de proveedores de tintas y cartuchos alternativos.
Aún así, fabricantes como #Canon y #HP han iniciado acciones de actualización telemática que no hacen más que inutilizar las impresoras provistas por cartuchos de la competencia. Mediante llaves criptográficas programadas en los chips de los cartuchos y controladores de impresión diseñados con malicia para agredir la propiedad ajena, utilizan conexiones de datos ajenas para desbancar a la libre competencia (a la par que inutilizan la impresora). Un caso paradigmático de ciber-secuestro.
Pero sobre lo llovido, mojado. La Pandemia del COVID trajo aparejado un crecimiento notable en la industria de los envíos, y el uso de #etiquetas autoadhesivas con códigos QR que le dan soporte. Estas etiquetas no se imprimen en impresoras de chorro de tinta, sino en máquinas de carro angosto provistas de rollos de impresión térmica. Estas impresoritas utilizan un cabezal con una tecnología expirada desde el punto de vista de la protección por patentes. Esta tecnologías no varían mucho: mediante pequeñas resistencias que activa el papel térmico (lo calientan) para hacer sus puntos monocromáticos. Existe papel resistente al agua, un plus para la etiquetas de envíos y delivery que se usan en logística.
La marca #Dymo, una de las fabricantes de impresoras de este tipo ahora caen sobre el "papel registrado", los rollos de etiquetas térmicas semi-plastificadas con respaldo autoadhesivo. Este tipo de insumo es comercializado por muchos fabricantes distintos, pero Dymo también se ha propuesto actualizar maliciosamente software instalado, logrando inutilizando las impresoras de etiquetas (conectadas al celular con aplicaciones de venta).
No solo eso, han decidido el uso de RFID en el rollo de papel para directamente impedir otro tipo de insumo que no sea el propietario.
Está demás decir el costo adicional que estos desarrollos "propietarios" tienen en un dispositivo tan básico como es una impresora de chorro de tinta o de etiquetas, hardware que hace al menos dos décadas se mantiene esencialmente igual, salvo por los ataques comerciales a las libertades de los mismos clientes y usuarios.
En los foros, l@s usuari@s "rantean". Para colmo que pagas por una impresora, te la "paran" por internet. Aún nadie ha ofrecido la acción liberadora de "fugarse de la cárcel" impuesta por software: la tarea de programar un "jailbreak" o #hackear la impresora suele estar desavenida por el carácter efímero de las máquinas. Sumado a los consumibles artificialmente cautivos, solemos hablar de equipamiento físicamente propenso a la rotura, e ingeniado para no poder repararse. En los EE.UU., por demás, la Millenium Copyright Act impone medio millón de dólares y hasta cinco años en prisión a quien otorgue "acceso de control" a material protegido por derechos de autor, tal como el firmware o software controlador en estas ticketeras.
La acción de libre mercado es tenue pero puede ser eficaz. Por ahora fabricantes como #Zebra o #MFLabel también hacen impresoras de etiquetas que permiten elegir qué tipo de papel térmico de etiqueta querés usar. En la EFF (Fundación de la Frontera Electrónica) incluso han propuesto a los poseedores de las Dymo 550 y 5XL tirarlas a la basura y comprar productos equivalentes de otros fabricantes. Zebra o MFLabel no dejaron pasar la oportunidad ofreciendo una especie de "plan canje" por "alguna etiquetadora con características defectuosas", a cambio de una equivalente. Oficialmente es una propuesta para máquinas de su diseño, aunque vari@s usuari@s afirman en línea que han aceptado máquinas de Dymo, bajo la operatoria "el cliente ofendido del competidor es mi cliente".
Pero la idea de Dymo de "papel con #DRM" (Gestión de Restricción Digital) es tan excesiva y abusiva que todos deben rechazarla. -

Après avoir collé un tag RFID dans ses rouleaux de papier (#DRM, toussa), #Dymo modifie les pages de ses anciens produits sur #Amazon, profitant alors de bonnes notations (4-5 étoiles) pour faire passer sa nouvelle génération d'imprimante à étiquettes comme étant excellentes 🤣
