  1. Genotyping by sequencing (Genetics 🧬)

In the field of genetic sequencing, genotyping by sequencing, also called GBS, is a method to discover single nucleotide polymorphisms in order to perform genotyping studies, such as genome-wide association studies. GBS uses restriction enzymes to reduce genome complexity and genotype multiple DNA samples. After digestion, PCR is perfo...

  5. Genotype (Genetics 🧬)

The genotype of an organism is its complete set of genetic material. Genotype can also be used to refer to the alleles or variants an individual carries in a particular gene or genetic location. The number of alleles an individual can have in a specific gene depends on the number of copies of each chromosome found in that species, also referred to as ploidy. In diploid species like...

  6. The Register: DNA sequencers found running ancient BIOS, posing risk to clinical research . “Cybersecurity shop Eclypsium claims security issues affecting leading DNA sequencing devices could lead to disruptions in crucial clinical research. The iSeq 100, developed by manufacturer Illumina, was torn down and found to be running an insecure BIOS implementation that opened up the device to […]

  8. The old #Veritasium video about "How They Caught The Golden State Killer" youtu.be/KT18KJouHWg raises some important points: The genetic information stored in various databases allows identifying distantly related individuals. Most are comfortable with that idea, as long as we're catching a killer or sexual predator. But the legal frameworks that control the law enforcement access to these database are not fixed and the laws governing the access can change. Let's image that our ability to identify certain criminal tendencies from genome gets to the point we can identify potential predators or future killers even before they potentially commit these acts. It might be difficult to argue against employing such capability to pre-emptively stop crime. Going this path is an insanely slippery slope, and unfortunately much of it is out of our control anyway. So many people have already deposited their genetic material to these databases that regardless how you personally feel about it, we're all already in the databases via our relatives. Since the laws will be enacted by politicians voted to the office by the majority, individual objections will carry little weight. To make matters worse this is a highly complicated topic which is easy to twist by using populist catchphrases. I'm no pessimist by any measure but I find this moderately terrifying. #thoughtoftheday #genetics #dnasequencing #profiling #privacy

  17. This is nice. Using bees, which naturally collect pollen and material from a wide area, as natural plant disease detectors.

"By sequencing genetic material from the bees’ bodies or from the pollen they deposit in the hives’ honeycomb, Roberts’s team has been able to verify the presence of known plant diseases. They have even detected one that hasn’t been officially found in the field: tomato ringspot virus"
