Well: late April rain was insufficient in my forest. growing plants absorbed every of it and soils remained exactly as dramatically dry as before.
no water = no life!
In early May, a crucial breeding time period for most insects, observation spots in clearings were devoid of any soil insect, despite heat and sun. No ground beetles. No rove beetles. Nothing. Ludicrous!
A little insect activity is detected under canopy only.
Without any predator roaming, my clearings are turning into a slug paradise! (I did not shoot a picture because some people seem to be afraid of slugs).

As agricultural areas are limited in mountain regions, they need to be used efficiently and therefore #grasslands often are embedded in #forests with no buffer zones (field margins).

There are currently around 7000 species of earthworms described...
🐛 (holy shit, I could swear last time there was an earthworm among the emojis 😭 )
The most important info would be to know the country/climate zone your garden is located. For example, for the US you can narrow it down to only 177 species 😈

Many species can be distinguished by counting the number of rings from the head until the clitellum (the wide belt) and the length of the clitellum.
(It is totally ok to wash earthworms for identification 🛀 )
Also interesting is to know the colour. There are three main groups:
- Epigeics: smaller, darker earthworms, that live closer to the surface under the mulch layer (the famous Eisenia foetida, used in vermicompost pertain to this group)
- Endogeics: larger pale earthworms, make horizontal burrows
- Anecics: the largest specimens, the "typical" earthworm, like Lumbricus terrestris. They dig vertical burrows and have often the front part pigmented, but the lower half more pale (because they chill a lot with half of their body in a burrow and get tan marks)For many of the other characteristics you'd need a binocular, as it gets more complicated (determining the position of their porius, their male sex organ; looking at the shape of their mouth; the position of the hairs -yes, earthworms have some hairs to stick )
As someone pointed out, it *could* indeed be Lumbricus terrestris, as this one is quit ubiquous, but there are many, many other possibilities.

I've been in New Zealand for three months now, and seen three of the five species of endemic Holacanthella 'Giant' springtails - not bad!
Let's hope the next two months bring the remaining two species to my camera 🤞
