I’ve spent 30 years watching tech cycles come and go, from the first dial-up modems in rural Austria to the mesh networks I’m currently stringing across the Australian bush. Each time a “next big thing” arrives, we see the same pattern: a frantic rush to centralise, followed by a slow, painful enclosure of what should have been a common resource. The current noise around AI in open source feels different. It feels heavier. There’s a justified fear that AI-generated code is hollowing out our commons. The Center for Digital Sovereignty of Public Administration (@zendis) aims to work with interested partners from administration, business, civil society, and research to define what digital sovereignty specifically means. And above all: how it can be measured. To this end, the organization has launched a public consultation process that runs until May 15, 2026.

The #DigitalCommons European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (#EDIC) is taking shape with more countries joining, a newly appointed Director, and its first projects — including a pilot for a European #SovereignTechFund.
Congratulations to Laurent Rojey on his appointment as Director of the DC EDIC. His appointment was unanimously approved by the General Assembly of the founding Member States.

Hi @bert_hubert it is fun that "we" might have some leverage here, but this isn't really #TechnologicalSovereignty.
The key problem with politicians talking about sovereignty is that they think we can be sovereign if we'd have European Googles and the likes.
But until we build truely #DigitalCommons, as you know well, with open standards interoperability, decentralised and distributed architectures and community-driven open source, we can overcome bigtech and maybe even preserve our democratic foundations.
