On August 8, a new batch of 60 free and open source projects was selected for the NGI Zero Commons Fund.

We want to thank these project teams for working on the digital commons and contributing to open, secure and trustworthy digital infrastructure for all.

This brings the total of grantees within the programme to 494 projects. There are still two more calls currently under evaluation for the program.

New version of ejabberd is out and fixes a security vulnerability. Amongst many other things my mod_invites got a good deal of improvements, a web-admin integration, a new reset password token and a page where users can create invites via web (if that’s allowed). Go get it while it’s hot!

In March #Heliboard asked people to help gather gesture data to implement a #FOSS alternative to the closed gesture typing library Heliboard currently relies on. Since then over 700.000(!) examples were submitted. The new 4.0 release includes opt-in background data gathering in the hopes to collect 2 million examples by November. XEP-0516 "XMPP Decentralized ID (XID)" that I've authored as part of my work on metadata reduction/serverless (https://nlnet.nl/project/ServerlessXMPP/, thanks NLnet!) has been published.

The goal is to have your XMPP identity independent of your DNS-based domain. At some point, it should be possible to have your XMPP account independent of your server.

Note that current version has issues and will be updated soon.

Work is in progress on XMPP deeper decentralization.
