"How a Counterintelligence Inquiry Into Trump’s Russia Ties Was Derailed

Documents released by the White House shed new light on the demise of an often-overlooked 2017 F.B.I. investigation.

    (. . .)

Mr. Trump has always dismissed as baseless smears suggestions that he was a Russian asset or had extensive financial ties to Russia. And no publicly known investigation into Mr. Trump ever demonstrated that he was acting at the behest of the Russians.

Here is a look at what we know now, based on the new documents and interviews with former federal law enforcement officials, about what happened."

  2. Given the focused nature of the smash-and-grab, and the parties involved, it does seem fairly likely that #IsraelAtWarCrimes (perhaps with "a little help from its friends" among #GenocidesBodyguards) has found a new way to obtain targeting intelligence on its favorite victims: Palestinian civilians.

This bears watching, both for those concerned about the humanitarian impact and accountability before the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and for #intelligence and #counterintelligence professionals contemplating what has been clearly an emerging source/method of collection. The latter should view this is connection with the other news I posted on this morning, in which our #SurveillanceCapitalism architecture is being exploited by hostile governments (including our own!) to track and target both deployed military personnel and dissenting citizens....

  3. NHK World Japan: Japan creates intelligence bureau amid privacy concerns. “Japan enacted a law on Wednesday to create a national intelligence bureau, a bid to strengthen its intelligence-gathering capabilities. But the move has sparked growing concerns about privacy, meaning the government will have to tread a fine line between gaining information and intrusion.”

The dismissals have added to concern inside the #DOJ & FBI that counterterrorism & #intelligence investigations in the wake of the #military operation in #Iran could be hampered by a mass exodus of #NationalSecurity experts, acc/to multiple sources.

#KashPatel gutted #FBI counterintelligence team tasked with tracking Iranian threats days before #US strikes, sources say

Just days before the US launched a major military operation in #Iran, Patel fired a dozen agents & staff members from a #counterintelligence unit tasked with monitoring #threats from Iran, acc/to 2 sources….

They were ousted for a simple reason: Each was involved in the investigation of #Trump’s alleged retention of #ClassifiedDocuments.

A former U.S. Air Force Major is charged with allegedly conspiring to provide combat aircraft training to China’s military, coordinating with Stephen Su Bin - previously convicted in a cyber espionage case involving Boeing’s C-17 transport aircraft data.

    Alleged violations include:
    • International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)

  9. The #House & #Senate are negotiating over a final version of an #intelligence policy bill, known as the Intelligence Authorization Act, & the proposal to overhaul #counterintelligence operations, including the level of #TulsiGabbard’s involvement, remains one of the main sticking points, congressional officials said.

  10. The disclosure, made in a pointed & unusual letter obtained by NYT, underscored the broader concern at other agencies, including the #FBI, over a #House bill that would empower #TulsiGabbard, the director of national #intelligence, to play a more prominent role in #counterintelligence issues.

It also appeared to be an effort to undercut Gabbard, who planned to endorse the change in a separate letter, given that the bill would step into what has typically been the bureau’s purview.

  11. #FBI Opposes Push for Gabbard to Take Lead on #Counterintelligence

The FBI made the disclosure in a pointed letter that underscored broader concern over a #GOP #House bill that would give more authority to [Russian asset] #TulsiGabbard, the director of national #intelligence.

The FBI informed #Congress last week that it “strongly” opposed a proposal to make the #ODNI the lead #counterintelligence agency for the federal government….

  12. The #Trump admin has said that more of the #FBI’s time is going to #immigration enforcement, but the figure of almost 25% is the first precise record of how big the shift has been. Warner requested the data as the top #Democrat on the #Senate #Intelligence Cmte.

  13. So far, none of the #US #spy agencies approached has transferred the data, several people said.

The unprecedented interest in data by officials at the #ODNI startled some senior agency ofcls, who have expressed concerns about the #counterintelligence & #privacy risks of aggregating what could be a large amount of sensitive information that may include references to intercepts of electronic communications on overseas targets…

  14. A recently published book, The #Spy in the Archive: How One Man Tried to Kill the #KGB, by the former #BBC security correspondent #GordonCorera, references the episode:

The book revealed - #CIA was concerned that #MI6 has a mole in it's senior ranks. That immediately sends chills through the spine of #CounterIntelligence officers, amid panic about ‘another #Philby’.

So #MI5 launched #OperationWedlock, & it lasted up to 20 years, but they found nothing in the end.

  15. A week after that #hack, the #CISA recommended that users "discontinue use of the product" barring any mitigating instructions about how to use the app from #Smarsh.

Jake Williams, a fmr #NationalSecurity Agency #cyber specialist, said that, even if the intercepted text messages were innocuous, the wealth of #metadata - the who & when of the #leaked conversations & chat groups - posed a #counterintelligence risk.

  16. @Nonilex “Some agents say that there’s trepidation about pursuing cases related to Russian #counterintelligence or #criminal matters related to #Russia, in part because of fear that their work could be seen to clash w/the [#Trump] White House….”

That shows a real clear understanding of who’s in the White House right now.
