The Real McKenzies - Barrett's Privateers
"Barrett's Privateers" ist eigentlich ein Lied des kanadischen Musikers Stan Rogers aus dem Jahr 1976. Es ist im Stil eines alten Seemannslieds geschrieben und gehört in Kanada längst zu den großen Klassikern, der oft in Kneipen und in geselliger Runde gesungen wird.
Die kanadische Celtic-Punk-Band The Real McKenzies hat den Song aufgegriffen und ihm eine deutlich rauere, schnellere und kräftigere Note gegeben.
Das Lied erzählt eine Geschichte aus dem Jahr 1778, zur Zeit des amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskriegs. Ein junger Mann heuert voller Abenteuerlust auf einem Kaperschiff an, der heruntergekommenen Antelope unter dem Kapitän Elcid Barrett. Die Fahrt geht jedoch böse aus. Bei dem Versuch, ein größeres Schiff zu überfallen, sinkt die Antelope, und die ganze Mannschaft kommt ums Leben. Nur der Erzähler überlebt und kehrt Jahre später als gebrochener Mann zurück, der seine Beine verloren hat.
Die Personen und das Schiff sind erfunden, doch die vielen Einzelheiten über die Kaperfahrten jener Zeit sind erstaunlich genau. So wirkt das Lied wie eine kleine Geschichtsstunde in wenigen Minuten.

Dropkick Murphys Share Video For “The Big Man”
Video still courtesy of Dropkick MurphysProviding a bit of an escape from all the chaos in the world, Dropkick Murphys have released a comical video for their song “The Big Man.”
It’s a hysterical and heartfelt ode to the band’s longtime friend Fletcher Dragge from Pennywise, one of punk rock’s biggest characters (including his proclivity to enjoy adult beverages from a Pringles can). The animated clip is mixed with performance footage from Dropkick Murphys’ shows around the world, including scenes from Dropkick Murphys’ recent tours with Pennywise.

When discussing the song, Dropkick Murphys’ Ken Casey told Stereogum: “We go way back with him [Fletcher], from ’90s Warped Tours to spending a lot of time with Pennywise on the road in the last few years. He’s got so many stories. We’ve witnessed many of the stories. But for every crazy thing he does, he does really nice things for people, too. We just thought it would be a fun thing to do, to acknowledge him.”
“The Big Man” video features character design and storyboarding by Adam Murphy and animation by Black Balloon Media. The song and video marks the final release from Dropkick Murphys’ acclaimed 2025 For The People album.
For The People shows courage and confidence, speaking up against the injustices happening in the United States, and doing so with the strength and power that harkens back to Dropkick Murphys’ earliest punk rock roots. For The People is more than a title. It’s a heartfelt stance, a declaration of who this band is – and who they’ve always been. Dropkick Murphys continue to advocate for workers’ rights and human rights – as they have done for their entire 29+ year career.
Dropkick Murphys will return to the road February 9, 2026 to kick off their 2026 For The People…In The Pit St. Patrick’s Day Tour with The Aggrolites and Haywire supporting on most dates. 5. Dropkick Murphys, album "For the people" - płyta po prostu dobra, pierwsza część lepsza od drugiej, ale to nadal Dropkick Murphys, czyli jeden z bardziej uznanych zespołów nurtu celtic punku. Słucha się tego dobrze, choć mówię - bardziej dropkickowo dojeżdża pierwsza część płyty, a potem trochę zaczyna się uspokojenie.
Wyróżnienia:
- Our Last Night - zespół post-hardcore, ale równie dobrze można to nazwać lekkim popem. Nic szczególnego, zespół jakich wiele, ale mają dość fajne i ostre covery znanych utworów.
- Tarfodd, album "Efterlamnade I Sorg" - takie przyjemne plumkanie jak na black metal, stosunkowo często trafiałem na spokojne fragmenty, ale też potrafią przyłożyć.
- Weald & Woe, album "Far from the Light of Heaven" - bardzo specyficzny black metal, a nawet nie wiem, czy black. Mocno wyróżniające się gitary na pierwszym planie, niezrozumiały wysoki wokal jakby zepchnięty w tło, taka dość podniosła, a nawet radosna atmosfera. Ale nie jest to taki blackgaze jak Deafheaven. Lubię ten zespół, ale nie wiem, czy mogę polecić tę płytę w pełni. Na wyróżnienie jednak zasługuje.

1. Koldbrann, album "Ingen Skansel" - po norwesku nazwa oznacza "gangrenę", także kwiatków się tutaj nie spodziewajcie. Mocno piwniczne granie, ale z tej piwnicy nieco wyższego standardu. Nie ma tutaj przebojowości ani melodii, jest trochę ciekawych riffów, zmian tempa (ale ogólnie nie jest to szalone gnanie przez pokrzywy). Trochę na granicy, ale jest to coś, co można sobie puścić w tle i niespecjalnie nas będzie odciągać od pracy, a zapewni ciekawe doznania, gdy już zwrócimy uwagę na muzykę.
2. The Rumjacks, Dropkick Murphys, singiel "Cold Like This" - króciutka "płyta" z trzema utworami, ale jako że są to jedne z moich ulubionych kapel z gatunku celtyckiego punku, to poczułem się jak w sklepie z zabawkami. I rzeczywiście, można się zżymać, że ten gatunek nie ma dużo innowacji, ale po prostu diabelnie przyjemnie słucha się przyśpiewek na bazie irlandzkich melodii wykonanych przez nieczyste, punkowo-pubowe głosy. Fani gatunku będą zadowoleni.
3. Fukpig - ale buja. Oczyma wyobraźni widzę Brytyjczyków pchających się na ściany podczas pogo. Trudno się rozróżnia taką muzykę, ale tutaj czuć, że poza bezmyślnym grindopodobnym napierniczaniem zespół chciał wprowadzić trochę urozmaiceń. Są nawet melodie w tle (np. w "Dogsh1it Hair"). Natomiast to nie zmienia faktu, że nadal grindopodobne (nie piszę "grindcore", bo nie jestem pewien) napierniczanie.
4. Sepulchral Curse - typowy death metal, bardziej w stylu Nile niż "szybkobiegaczy". Wszystko byłoby normalne, nawet trochę powolne, ale ten wokal! Ach, duszny, piekielny, jednostajny, skłaniający do rozważań, czy to na pewno sprawka człowieka (oczywiście, że tak). To nie jest tak, że to mój ulubiony styl wokalny, ale tutaj jest bardzo dobrze zrealizowany i mięsisty.

Nowy tydzień to i nowe polecajki muzyczne. Nie zawsze metalowe, ale jednak w dużej mierze tak.
