Lifehacker: You Can Play This ‘Hidden’ Game in Your TikTok DMs. “TikTok has gone through a lot of changes as of late, especially since U.S. companies took a majority stake in the company. But while users have had to decipher new terms of service, some of which raise alarm bells, they’ve also had some innocuous adjustments to contend with as well. Case in point: TikTok now has a game, built […]

Gizmodo: The Creator of Wordle Just Came Out With a New Game, and It’s Hard. “After selling his hit puzzle game Wordle to The New York Times in 2022 for an undisclosed price somewhere in the ‘low seven figures,’ Josh Wardle is finally back with a new game. But while Wordle became hugely popular for its simple, intuitive, and satisfying gameplay, Wardle’s latest project, Parseword, is aiming […]

Spotted on LinkedIn, from Doug Beeferman: Cadgy. From the help popup: “Make valid 5-letter words by selecting one letter from each column, like the word ‘SCARF’ below. There are exactly 10 basic words and 10 bonus words to be found. Definitions for the bonus words appear beneath the grid—they are sometimes very esoteric—but you’re on your own to find the basic words. A letter turns gold […]

Popped up in my RSS feeds: Words.zip. “An infinite collaborative word search where anyone can find and submit words—no account required. Select letters and submit valid words to add them to the grid.” You may have to scroll the word search some to find a spot with unfound words. You cannot use a letter that’s already been used for another word.

Techdirt: Let’s Go! The Public Domain Game Jam Starts Today. “This year, that means we enter a new decade, as works originally published in 1930 finally exit copyright protection and become free to remix, repurpose, and build on. Gaming Like It’s 1930! begins today and runs until the end of the month, and we’re calling on designers of all stripes to help us show why a robust and growing […]

Mozilla Blog: Data War goes digital: Firefox’s card game is now online. “Billionaire Blast Off started with a simple premise: send billionaires into space and have fun doing it. With Data War, we created a fun and often chaotic game where you compete to win a one-way ticket to space for a data-hungry billionaire. We were thrilled that so many people at TwitchCon had a blast playing it. You […]

Mashable: Rule34dle is a game that mashes up Wordle and smutty cartoon art . “Like Wordle, Rule34dle is a game, but distinctly different. When you go on the site, you’ll be paired with two fictional franchise characters (like Pokémon) and told how many pornographic posts exist of the one on the left. The number of smutty posts for the character on the right is hidden. You must guess which of […]

Engadget: The New York Times is letting you create your own Wordle puzzles. “…fans of the popular word game can create their own custom puzzles. The publication announced today that its All Access and Games subscribers have the option to make World challenges of their own to send to friends and family.”

Lifehacker: How to Play ‘Shuffalo,’ the New Yorker’s Answer to Wordle. “I’ve been enjoying Shuffalo, a quick daily word game from the New Yorker that I can’t help but compare to the New York Times’s Wordle, which is so popular we publish hints for it every day. But it really feels like an improvement on a different New York Times game, Spelling Bee—quicker and with more useful hints.”

Engadget: This horse-themed browser puzzle game is an absolute delight and I can’t stop playing it. “Another day, another adorable game that I’ve become completely obsessed with. I came across Roly-Pony this weekend during a particularly soul-sucking bout of doomscrolling, and it’s turned out to be the perfect little temporary respite from the horrors.”

Really happy how this portion of my casual game project is coming along! I've implemented track segments that can be combined into complete tracks, and cars that can follow them.
There's currently jank due to discontinuities in the track and no interpolation between rotation angles for the cars, but for being the more vector math heavy part of the project it's looking good enough for now.
Now to combine the grid and the track!

Using a day sick in bed to work on my game. Starting to work on the car racing portion of the game, which will be the framing device to tie together plays of the grid.
If you've played pocket card jockey you'll get it, it's kinda hard to explain why and that game barely tries.

Working on configurable board generation to create easier and harder boards for different game states. I'm also thinking of ways to adjust the "friendliness" of the row the grid refills from. This way I'll be able to adjust how the game plays at different difficulty levels through a custom resource.

Been doing some refactoring, but now I've also added "goal tokens" which will be scored when they reach the bottom of the grid. For now they just do a janky little animation when they reach the bottom.

Added animation to block position updates with Tweeners. The tween only takes a duration as an argument, so for now I'm multiplying the duration by the vertical distance to be traveled to make things fall at the same rate.
This doesn't work when I apply an easing function though, so that remains on the figure-out-later list
In the background I'm also working on generating boards that aren't just uniformly random.

Implemented loading a new row of tokens from a reserve area below the grid. This revealed a bug where I was compacting empty columns horizontally, but was filling the empty spaces with columns which all referenced the same array. Now each empty column is its own chunk of memory.
Continuing to think about different levers for scaling the difficulty without slanting the odds too far in the player's favor

Another day's work on my casual puzzle game and groups can be clicked to remove them, and the grid updates vertically and horizontally.
Next on the docket is animating the tokens between grid updates.

From seeing Uma Musume: Pretty Derby getting popular, to it making me want to replay Pocket Card Jockey, to getting addicted for a week, to coming up with ideas to make my own Pocket Card Jockey-like.
Fighting to implement systems as quickly as possible before getting into the weeds of visuals. Got a breadth-first traversal of the grid to find contiguous islands.
