BB-UN300 held up around 18 months on my commuter. Changing it is a little annoying, but is it really worth the effort going for a more premium part if a spare costs just 12€?
Practically speaking, premium square tapered BBs go fo 100-200€, and I don't think they will last 20-30 years... And then there's the risk of theft that someone has to be factored in.

Related to this: It really was the first warm weekend, and I went to a (larger) 100k long group ride. Because my pedalling felt weird the day before, I measured my chain and replaced it. But what forgot to check was wear of the sprockets. So my chain kept skipping in the fastest three gears... 🤦
The lesson is to always do a quick spin after any repair / maintenance. -
Yay. That must be ragebaiting for sure...
I actually agree. We must embrace simple and maintainable technology. Draw a line in the sand and restrict ourselves to "lowtech" solutions that work long term.

Really ambiguous feeling about my Vittoria Mezcal tires. (I use 29/2.35) They are super fast, but not nice if it gets muddy or wet. So very slippery...
I'm wondering if anyone switched from Mezcals to other tires with a little more grip. What did you switch to? How was your experience?

First bike with a seatpost wedge clamp, and this video helped me a *lot*: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dm2wJutGaY

First bicycle converted to Clik valve. ✅
(Not sure what to evaluate before switching the other ones...)

@MarkBrigham For me it's either classical butyl tubes (brand ones from Schwalbe or Continental) or tubeless. Everything in between doesn't feel like it's worth the hassle / money.
If I'd do some sort of racing I might consider having TPUs as spares for a tubeless setup.

Here's the thing 🙄

Where can I get custom stickers printed?
Watching bike builders commenting on most loved and hated standards. And the guy saying "cables don't offend me" hits the nail on the head.
I want to make a sticker out of this quote and put it on all my bikes.

Who knew Tik Tok is a good source for bike hacks 🤩🤭

Every time I work on #Campagnolo #bicycle components, I feel like a cold war airplane engineer who just got his hands on a Soviet plane for the first time and is trying to figure out how it all works. The principles are all familiar, but it’s just so different. #bikewrench #bikewrenching

Cheap food dehydrator hacked into a filament dryer also works well to dry drivetrain parts 😎

First proper clean of new bike, including ceramic coating 😎 Should be good for the upcoming wet season.

It's actually just an experiment because Hermes screwed up my order for another drop bar, but it feels so agile and fast with upright bars, maybe I'll leave it like this for some time...

Stupid #Shimano #Di2 charge connector has an intermittent connection fault, which apparently is *very* common with these (€40!) cables.
So instead of buying a new one, I'm going to try and #3dprint a replacement myself. All I have to do now is wait for 2mm pitch pogo pin connectors to arrive and slot them in the connector I “designed”.
FWIW, only the 2 middle pins (of 4) are relevant, those are the + and - 5V pins. The other two don’t do anything I think (or perhaps they allow for some top secret protocol to be passed over USB).

Watching a #GMBN Tech video on how to replace a cable on a #mountainbike with headset cable routing.
Note to self: never get a bike with headset cable routing 😫

@gpshead Current position among the circles of bike maintenance: ordered more parts.

Finally got around to replacing the main pivot bearings of my #Orbea #OIZ #mountainbike.
This is how they came out, the inside seals were completely disintegrated and there was no discernible grease left between the balls. I guess this explains why they felt a bit crunchy 😂

I got two sets of #Jagwire Pro semi-metallic pads, one of which has an interesting spring design, where the spring folds around the pad material. It’s not entirely flat though, so at some point (when the pads wears out) it’ll start touching the rotor.
The other pad came with a regular spring.

Not sure, but I don't think a head set #bearing is supposed to look like that 🫣

A bit of an upgrade for my Moloko bar to
1) make horns longer (for “aero” position)
2) make the ends sturdier (so that bar tape not damaged when they touch the ground b/c of maintenace/crash)Couldn't find anything fitting for bicycles; these are motorcycle bar ends made by Sato Racing.
~36mm of extra length.
