  1. The standard Fox News fare of BS and partisan slurs over reality apparently targeted #Asheville a week or so ago and I had missed it.

They did manage to talk only to Republicans.

Today, the #AVLWatchdog had a pretty good rejoinder, including the fact that one of the Repubs they had interviewed is not only running for Governor, but also the head of Trump's FEMA, which should be providing funds for the area to recover after Helene:

  6. A great video from the #AVLWatchdog on one of the deaths at Mission Hospital since HCA purchased the system in 2019.

No one is blaming the nurses. This is all down to HCA and their abysmal cost-cutting, leaving untrained, and badly over-loaded staff caring for very sick patients.

  7. An excellent #AVLWatchdog article about the challenges our trail system are still facing, almost 18 months after hurricane Helene. The extraordinary work of volunteers is ongoing, as is the hugely increased risks of wildfire and property damage.

Thank you to everyone who does this kind of work anywhere in the world, so others can enjoy the beautiful spaces.

  8. For anyone following the mess at #MissionHospital in #Asheville, apparently CMS is finally getting serious about the recurrent deadly ineptitude and isn't falling for "we'll staff up for a month until this goes away" BS.

  9. The #AVLWatchdog has a story on our country's slide into "irresponsible ignorance" as Buncombe County NC announces 5 cases of #measles.

I am simply without words for how we can do this to ourselves.

  10. Want to thank @firefly for pointing out the 3 #measles cases now in #Buncombe County, my area near #Asheville

Falling vaccination rates, lying and stupidity have brought us here, and people are going to be hurt.

  15. The crippling of the #ACA will ultimately affect every American.

An excellent piece from #AVLWatchdog on what it means in the #Asheville area, where not only are premiums almost doubling, but because of HCA/Mission and the lack of competition in our hospital systems, we are also 15% over areas in the state like Raleigh.

  16. #MissionHospital placed in "immediate jeopardy" for the 3rd time since HCA bought them. This is the harshest sanction that CMS can levy against a healthcare institution.

  17. Excellent piece from the #AVLWatchdog about #Manna #FoodBank our supplier of groceries to 225 organizations here in #WNC

Cuts to #SNAP & the 2 programs that helped organizations like Manna purchase fresh food from local farmers have cut deeply into their funding, and this is AFTER Helene completely destroyed their warehouse and all of their systems.

They've set up in a new location, & are trying, with community support, to meet the expanding need here for food.

This should be the role of government - to ensure its citizens are not hungry. My local community will not be able to bridge this shortfall.

  18. A new piece from #AVLWatchdog about the inadequacy of the #FEMA flood maps in the #Asheville area during #Helene and now going forward.

I know during our time in Florida that the NFIP actually subsidized the floor insurance and thus spurred development right along the coast, which was built and rebuilt several times due to storm damage.

Although in CenFL we did buy flood insurance in our last house, as coverage was relatively inexpensive, and the area was low-lying.

Premiums have gone way up, and I don't carry it here in WNC now.

  19. More reporting on the dismal job #HCA is doing here in #Asheville after their purchase of our Mission healthcare system, from the #AVLWatchdog

HCA is the group that when challenged about the standard of care in our community after their purchase, stated that they "had never committed to providing quality care." I still want that on a billboard.

  24. Our local independent news source, the #AVLWatchdog had an excellent piece today, equating the natural disaster of #Helene with the man-made disaster the GOP is inflicting on this region and the nation. It's worth a read.

  25. The #AVLWatchdog has a new article on the business closings and failures in downtown after #Helene

It doesn't take any time to see the differences everywhere. Fewer visitors, closed restaurants, much of our outdoors still harder to access.

Don't think this will be a 1-year recovery. I did chuckle at the "not the time to panic" comment, though. When IS the time to panic? #Asheville

  28. Another excellent, in-depth article on the state of the #FrenchBroad river in the #Asheville area, after #Helene. Apparently a good deal of the river is looking pretty good (if you're careful where you look) but I wouldn't set foot in it for a while personally.

  34. @briankrebs

So true. Our local bank, Manna, was completely destroyed in the #Asheville floods from #Helene, yet still managed to get food out to the people who need it. Their donations have gone way up, but they have to rebuild their operation from scratch, even while still providing more food, with less support.

A very good article on the topic from #AVLWatchdog

  35. I know which group I'm most likely to believe in this terrible situation.

A patient died in a restroom in the lobby of Mission Hospital ER last week, when no rooms were available for them to be seen, and even after pulling the cord for assistance.

HCA/Mission has of course fired someone, while the staff describe being overloaded and understaffed. This is a constant issue since HCA began their for-profit destruction of #Asheville's hospital system.

  36. Well, this is going to make a lot of people in West Asheville quite unhappy.

The long-dragged out I26 revamping now comes with a flyover of Patton Ave. Which no one has heard about, although apparently part of the "new" design for a year.
