  1. No farmers' market flowers today - we're in #WNC for the annual gathering of the Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail.
On our way out to Asheville, we swung by Linville Gorge to scout the Spence Ridge trail and look for the spring at Table Rock, in advance of hopefully going backpacking and climbing out there next week...
The trail was thronged with wild azaleas and irises - an extra joy in a lovely hike!

  2. I bought a chainsaw. Cleared some limbs. But. Am I just a dilettante mountain man? Have chainsaw; doesn’t use it but once?

Clearing another tree today. Had to top up the oil. So. That makes me feel a little less of a poser.

Now I need to work on making straighter cut without twisting the blade so it binds.

Our city's independent bookstore needs your help!

My local anticapitalist, antifascist, LGBTQIA+ friendly, anarchist, super ultra crunchy, cooperatively owned, and self described "radical bookstore" is falling on tough times.

Hurricane Helene was a doozy y'all, a ton of small businesses like this are closing with no plans on reopening. The FEMA payments meant to help Asheville and WNC are being bogged down in a bunch of red tape, so many of us haven't seen a dime of them yet, even though some of it is earmarked to help small business. And, although tourism is coming back (and we're very very open for business!) the shock to the system was just too big for a lot of folks.

I've seen long-standing cornerstorne-of-the-neighborhood places just like this wink out of existence without any warning, only to be replaced by exploitative, soul-sucking corporate owned chains run by people who don't even live or pay their taxes in our community. I don't want to keep seeing this happen to the town I grew up in.

These are good people who provide an essential service to our city: being some of the loudest, most outspoken defenders of our human rights, and providing civic minded reading material you won't find anywhere else.

They sell books other people don't want you to read, and that generally means those are books you're obligated to read.

Also, they once hosted the backroom of their bookstore out as a viewing space for a no-budget student film I helped make like a decade ago and they were real cool about it so-long-as everyone we invited to the screening bought a coffee or a book. Do you think Barnes & Nobel would do that? Would Amazon?

Check 'em out! Buy a banned book! Become a sustaining member of one of the best independent bookstores around!

  4. We don’t live in bear central AKA Buncombe county. But. Something knocked some of our bird feeders over last night.

Maybe an ambitious raccoon or opossum was climbing up the porch railing. Or. Maybe a bear found it confusing and left before messing with everything on the porch.

Bringing in the feeders for the evening seems prudent.

People neighbor’s trash can was dumped, so, it looks like our bear neighbors are back with for the summer. They’re rough. But quiet.

Overview Situated immediately outside the Town of Banner Elk are two notable ski resorts in the area, namely the Beech Mountain Resort in the north and the Sugar Mountain Resort in the south. Wildcat Lake is situated nearby, and Grandfather Mountain is situated somewhat further to the southeast. In town, however, is the Banner House Museum, largely home to preserved historical artifacts from the 1860s in an analogous historic home. 21. Part of the wildly changing weather that came through yesterday afternoon here in #WNC. We had 53F temps and sun earlier, for a great walk and a coffee sitting outside, but before we got home there were clouds, winds and a very changeable temperature!

    The sky changed, too.

    @NCwx

  22. The #WNC area has had an upgraded wind warning until 7pm Saturday, with some serious threats from NWS

20-30mph with gusts to 65. Expecting power outages and tree damage. Telling people to stay in the lower level of their homes, and avoid driving...

More snow possible, with white-out conditions.

They had talked about wind, but no one had said anything like all of this.

We had several power blips this afternoon when the winds picked up, but it switched successfully each time. And these were only about 14mph winds.

Hang onto something, we will apparently never have a normal weekend again!

  23. Total for yesterday's rain event, was 1.75" which is a goodly amount here in #WNC. Hoping that lowers the fire risk for a while.

Colder today, 38/18F so brace yourselves!

    #Asheville #NCwx

  24. Ok, local #Asheville people and others fond of #WNC, which local town am I in?

  25. The Mountain Express had an excellent set of photos from #NoKings in #WNC yesterday, including Marion, Hendersonville and #BlackMountain (where we were.)

They have one excellent shot of the corner with the clock by town square showing some of the folks. Each of the other 3 corners looked the same, and people extended down each block. This was a good showing for a small town, including some of us from #Asheville who didn't want to wait until 6pm.

  26. #Thursday, yet another day that begins at 4AM, will start out cool, not warm up much, and then plummet into the low 40s here in #WNC

Our chance for rain never materialized, and is now gone for another 10 days, with the cold front ushering in lower humidities, too.

    Good morning, all.

  27. Just another early photo of the nutty folks in #WNC who had to start their #Halloween decorations early because *waves hands around*

My hat, and 2 spares. They got a bit damp.

  28. ProPublica and The Assembly have been reporting on the impact of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina, and we know recovery is far from over.

If you’re in the process of rebuilding, we want to hear from you.

  29. Yesterday's (Wednesday's) dawn walk at the #ParkAtFlatRock in #WNC for a meander around, something we've missed doing for a while.

Quite foggy to begin with, and fewer people.

  34. #Wednesday, I guess, for most of us, and cool still in Asheville today, but warming up the rest of the week with perhaps a bit of rain today.

The #insomnia is strong today. Good morning/evening, friends.

  35. There is just the smallest hint of #Autumn here in #WNC this morning. I hadn't noticed my neighbor's huge maple before, but it has just the lightest tinge of color right at the top.

My own maple has a half-broken branch I keep meaning to take out, which has made it a LOT easier to stop - that section has turned lovely colors.

  37. Another excellent article from #AshevilleWatchdog on the city's recovery from hurricane #Helene, especially in the Biltmore Village area. We've been doing our best to help New Morning Gallery!

  39. Excellent piece from the #AVLWatchdog about #Manna #FoodBank our supplier of groceries to 225 organizations here in #WNC

Cuts to #SNAP & the 2 programs that helped organizations like Manna purchase fresh food from local farmers have cut deeply into their funding, and this is AFTER Helene completely destroyed their warehouse and all of their systems.

They've set up in a new location, & are trying, with community support, to meet the expanding need here for food.

This should be the role of government - to ensure its citizens are not hungry. My local community will not be able to bridge this shortfall.

At a gun safety rally a few years back, a gun nut felt the need to ask stupid leading questions. They project the idea of a hypocrisy they can expose onto the gun control folks. It’s tiresome.

Today? I saw only positive support.
