I'm seeing a lot of North Carolinians take exceptionally useless approaches to "fighting" Duke Energy. There's no one you can petition on Change.org who gives a fraction of a shit about how many signatures you gather.
Flip the state legislature. We have these problems in part because you're not voting in "off years." And, yes, our state is gerrymandered to hell and back but that was also caused by you not showing up to "local only" elections.
Our elections matter as you can well see by all the bullshit our state legislature has gotten up to.
No democrats (or better) even running for your local legislative position? I guess you'd better go find one and haul their ass down to the election board to get them on the ballot.
Despite not thinking much of electoral politics, I show up to every election they let me vote in. If you've ever griped about my lack of enthusiasm for the terrible choices your party has on offer, I vote more than you do. And, yes, I do vote for your terrible "moderates" when that's all that's on offer. When it's time to do the one thing you believe actually works, you've got to go out and do that thing.

I'm a well-known hater of my "local" power company (Duke Energy), for a variety of reasons including environmental crimes they've been convicted of. Their most recent crime is illegally collecting money that wasn't owed them.
The NC Court of Appeals refused to make them pay back their ill gotten gains on the argument that the NC legislature had passed a bill that would have allowed Duke to take that money they weren't owed anyway.
This has made a lot of people understandably very upset, especially as Duke Energy prices skyrocket out of control and Duke Energy refuses to repair its last mile infrastructure, leading to frequent brown-outs in less wealthy neighborhoods.
So, what are they doing with their government approved loot? Repairing last mile infrastructure? If so, it still hasn't reached my underprivileged neighborhood where we've had at least four brown outs in rapid succession this morning.
What they definitely are doing is making me see a bunch of ads about how great they are.
I need solar panels and a just society.

Once again I am reminding you that the ONLY reason Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina is standing up to #Trump and saying the right things is because he is retiring. Before he announced he was a typical Republican lackey.

I'm not going to say that the people of Western North Carolina are buffoons who keep electing creeps. I'll let their selection of Mark Meadows, Madison Cawthorn, and Chuck Edwards to be their Representatives speak for itself. #GOP #NCPOL www.axios.com/2026/05/04/c...

Heading out shortly to a #NoKings protest in Concord, NC, in a Republican-heavy area. Hoping to motivate independents / unaffiliated to vote in the upcoming mid-terms. Got my flags to wave.
I haven't missed one of these protests, even when traveling in Nashville, TN and Savannah, GA.

If you live in #NorthCarolina and aren’t following the Hometown Holler, you’re missing out. Best (left leaning) political commentary there is.

HA HA HA HA BERGER IS OFFICIALLY DONE!!!!
Now granted, Sam Page is nobody anyone should want near public office. Still, this is the NC equivalent of trading McCarthy for Johnson. They'll get a replacement but no one will be able to funnel wealthy donors to Senate races the way Berger could.

#NCPOL Establishment Democrats are losing their primaries against more progressive candidates.
In my district and the race I’ve been posting about, Foushee (backed by crypto and AI companies) won over Nida Allam. HOWEVER, the less than 1% margin means a recount is likely and the AP has not called the race, despite Fouchee declaring victory.
-
Follow up on the Congressional primary race in my district (NC-4)….
So apparently much of the spending on Fouchee is coming from AI companies (Anthropic specifically) because she’s a pro-business Democrat, as in ‘ok with data centers.’
Her primary challenger is Nida Allam. A progressive who doesn’t take corporate money and is endorsed by Bernie Sanders. She’s decidedly anti-data center.

CW: US health insurance access, North Carolina
@ksclarke
One of the (nationally) biggest carriers that's been in the NC ACA Marketplace has been Aetna. They no longer participate. Nationwide, I gather. So options diminished sharply this year.
At least in Durham there were vanishingly few PPO (vs. HMO) this time. So out-of-network coverage is rare. And the BCBS plans available in Durham don't include Duke providers (!), though this is not new.
I'm pretty sure most of the mental health providers for our new carrier (Ambetter) are a ghost network. It's nearly March and I have yet to be able to schedule with a psychiatrist, since the one I've seen for six years under BCBS and Aetna isn't covered. I'm paying a negotiated cash rate for my therapist (also covered by BCBS and Aetna) as often as I can, while they have been trying since December to get listed with Ambetter.
Long story short, I'm not surprised. Fewer offerings, and worsening ones. Even on top of the subsidy issue.
Shit is brutal.

This is a must-read article for #NorthCarolina #politics. Phil Berger has controlled the Republican dominated state legislature for years. But now he’s facing a surprisingly strong primary challenger for his #NC Senate seat. Sam Page, a cowboy hat wearing sheriff is harnessing MAGA populism to challenge the ultimate political insider.

Can anyone local speak to this? I'm not plugged in enough to know if any of it is true, or if David Hogg or some related PAC is even actually pushing money at the NC04 primary election. https://bsky.app/profile/rsouissivibes.bsky.social/post/3me2nuun27s2y

Rep. Foushee would be great for a purple district in Eastern NC. But #NC04 is one of the most progressive districts in the country, and we deserve representation too - especially at a time like this when leadership requires confronting fascists.

One thing is clear: ICE has no idea what WTF they're doing. There is no plan or strategy beyond racist thuggery. Which means it's very easy for us to dissuade them. Let's make North Carolina a huge pain in Trump's ass, y'all.

North Carolina Residents,
Help us pressure Gov. Stein to stop Duke Energy. They’re already the third largest climate polluter in the country. Their plans to expand fossil derived energy production will be devastating to the globe.
