  1. Struggling with invisible deadlines? Stop relying on mental schedules.

Under stress, the mind drops time-related tasks.

Draw a physical timeline. Make the abstract sequence concrete.

  3. Further to my tip about microwaving a sweet potato as a quick and easy snack, it's also possible to prep a more elaborate meal with minimal effort, by putting a normal potato in the microwave.

I find about 3-4 minutes each side works, depending on the size of the potato and how many. You want to make sure they're thoroughly cooked, right to the skin, but if you overdo it you end up with crunchy potato. So best to underdo it and put it back in for a bit longer.

  4. Make thorough Things to Do lists, but don't beat yourself up about whether or not any particular item gets done.

The main benefit of TTD lists is that they relieve us from juggling huge numbers of tasks in our heads, relying on a working memory that is - let's be honest - not usually our greatest strength ; )

  5. For a range of reasons, people with ADHD are more likely to wake up dehydrated, feeling groggy and yuck.

To mitigate this, I keep a reusable water bottle by my bed, and make sure to fill it up every night before I go to bed. When I wake up, the very first thing I do is slug the whole thing back.

When I get up, the first thing I do is refill it and put it back in its spot. I try to drink another full bottle in the first few hours I'm awake, especially on hot days.

  6. Yes!! Skills aren't "all or none." Each person has their own unique pattern of relative strengths and weaknesses. Understanding what the executive functioning skills *are* can help you think about your own profile.

  7. One of my fave ADHD tips: if something will take less than two minutes* to complete, do it right away.

I've been putting off the task of adding a hook for my car charger for ever, yet it took about a minute to do. I'd left the hook out as a prompt recently, so when I was clearing the table and saw it I just went out and did it.

What are your favourite ADHD tips?

    * obviously time blindness is a limiting factor, but hopefully something this small isn't too bad.

  9. If someone you know with #ADHD is struggling with motivation, please don't encourage us to get active and do more stuff.

    I know you mean well. But chances are, at least part of what we're struggling with is a condition known as Pathological Demand Avoidance, which erodes our motivation, and make us instinctively push back against even the gentlest inducement;

You're more likely to help by giving encouragement to do the minimum and rest.

  15. For the record, sharing a similar story about myself in response to your story is an ADHD attempt to build rapport. As someone with ADHD I love hearing your related story but I understand that it comes across as trying to steal the spotlight sometimes.

  16. If you like the Magic ToDo tool that breaks down tasks into smaller tasks, the same developer has created a tool that estimates how long a task will take:

Thanks @bunnyhero for tracking down the creator of Magic ToDo and more info on how it works.

  17. I finally learned to be a lot easier on myself about 3 years ago and it has made living with #adhd so much easier (so has #Stoicism and being intentional about whether something is worth the energy or not).

If you had to give one tip to someone newly diagnosed with ADHD, what would it be?

  18. Q: How do you stay focused on one project or idea at a time?

A: I stop myself from doing too much in one day, or over multiple days (ie #hyperfocus), because it results in mild burnout, which means I have to stop & distract myself; days become weeks become months and re-starting *always* feels worse than starting.

So I limit myself to X hours/day, with flexibility to stop a little sooner if a stopping point presents itself, or a little later if I have to complete something. (This also accounts for Y hours/day for work.)

The biggest thing is to be easy on myself because my inner critic is a harsh MF. Being able to let it go (thx to #Stoicism) and think that I’ll do better tomorrow is much more helpful than beating myself up. It makes getting back on the horse easier.

    What about you?

  19. Just realized that I’ve been able to #workout consistently because when I have the internal ‘Do I really want to work out today’ debate, I do it while feeding the animals. By the time they’ve got food & water, I’ve convinced myself to at least do a shorter workout.

Today I’m up a bit late but I’m achy af due to a weekend of yard work. But I need a #mobility workout to feel better.
