this is me showing my nibling how to harvest salt from the shoreline rocks. it hasn't rained for 3 weeks (very unusual for east hawai'i! it's because of El Niño.), so the salt nooks were in peak shape!
every patch tasted just a bit differently!
the story i had heard was: to gather salt at the shoreline, wait for a big storm with big waves. then, wait for everything to completely dry out. then go look for white salt deposits in the depressions in the rocks.
i figured that even though i hadn't remembered a big storm, 3 weeks of zero rain would certainly result in some good salt buildup. i was right!
cliff salt isn't just salty, it tastes like the sea. a friend told me: "it's concentrated mana from the ocean." it's not like eating table salt.
plus, we were just using the tips of our fingers to get a little out of the caves, so we weren't eating it by the tablespoon. we didn't harvest any to take home, we just did taste tests. by the time we'd tried a bunch, we didn't want any more salt.
it's good to know that should the boats ever stop coming to the island, i know where my nearest salt is: a mere 5 miles away, completely downhill. 🌊 🌋

this is what i like to call a "jungle incense-holder". it did the job though!
in fact, i'd argue that it was the right tool for the job. the block was already wet, so there was no chance of it getting caught on fire. and, it was already under hand, just laying around. very convenient.
now that it's finished its job as an incense holder, it can go back to its life as "slowly disintigrating block", until it finds some other use, or gets put into the garden as mulch.

it makes me feel sooo much better about myself when i see a master gardener step over his janky-ass "door-gate" that doesn't actually open and is just made out of random stuff piled up lol. and he has to lift the vine to get in - just like me!!! 😭

@alxd @SolarpunkPrompts @tomasino speaking of solarpunk realities, i'm going to not-humbly promote my hashtag: #actualsolarpunk
i mostly use it here: https://regenerate.social/tags/ActualSolarPunk
maybe some other people use it too, but i couldn't figure out how to search beyond that instance.

#ActualSolarPunk is: dreaming that i was chasing wild pigs away from the garden last night, & then today, hearing some suspicious pig-like-rustling & chasing those pigs away.
at first i was like "whoa a premonition dream!" but then i thought "maybe my subconscious just knows that pig-scaring is a part of life out here, so it put that into an everyday scenario 😅 "
as i was hollering & yelling, all i could think was: if one doesn't have a dog to do the hollering, one has to do it oneself!

here's a question for y'all: how would you measure current in an off-grid DC solar setup with an MPPT charge controller & 12V power ports (that are not seeming to deliver as much power as they should be...)? an ammeter? DC ammeter? other?

is this the #ActualSolarPunk version of a hammer & sickle (tropical style)? 😅 a rusty machete & rusty japanese-style grass sickle?

recently i helped @saltphoenix replace her solar charge controller (and leveled up my own solar hacking skills in the process). and she made me this absolutely stunning embroidered patch badge to mark my achievement. 😻

if you want to know what an #ActualSolarPunk shelf looks like, it might look something like this: resistors kit, fishing line, wire, multimeter, giant rock.
never underestimate the usefulness of a giant rock on the #homestead / #farm / #garden / #offgrid. (not to smash someone over the head, but to prop stuff up and hold things)

i apologize if margaret atwood is canceled, but i was just thinking that her book "oryx & crake" has some of my favorite #solarpunk images: a grumpy person in a tree in a hot overgrown forest with pigs all around (totally accurate to #ActualSolarpunk)....
or the "god's gardeners" who are like a hippie commune with an A+ rooftop garden and bees.i haven't read the book in a long time, but i remember those images having an effect on me. especially the hippie gardeners.
but also, now that *i'm* the one who's sweaty in a hot forest with pigs around, i can look back and think "wow, how'd this canadian lady know?" 😅

@quinsibell it is absolutely solarpunk. and most importantly, it is #ActualSolarPunk. 💪

...another instance where calm is called for: when you spot a bipalium kewense flatworm that's longer than your foot.
these guys are big predators of earthworms & are thus enemies of mine. they may also be carriers for angiostrongylus.
they are one of my least favorite creepy crawlies. do not touch with your hands. smoosh them on sight. they can regrow from fragments, so smoosh them FULLY.

living with the land requires a certain level of calm when you find a huge live cane toad floating in one of your water buckets (toad juice!!!). or when you find a slug at the bottom of your veggie bowl. that bowl gets put in a tub every day at dusk so slugs don't get in, & yet!
(slugs here are carriers for angiostrongylus cantonensis, & the cane toads have poison skin. yay nature!)

#ActualSolarPunk is your friend pulling up handfuls of local-variety sweet potato cuttings just as you're leaving, so you attach them to the back of your bike (on top of the other stuff you're bringing home), and bike home with a beautiful puff of purple and green. these will be a wonderful addition to our garden!

...i really think that most #solarpunk artists/writers/etc. would benefit from living with the land for a while.. or from setting up a solarpunk project, like water catchment, compost/gardening, solar power, building something out of wood, etc. even fixing one's own clothes is good.
whatever it is, you can't buy the thing ready to go! use cheap/repurposed materials. free is best. junk is all around.
obviously if you already do stuff like this, my message doesn't apply :}

...i posted the above because i see a lot of #solarpunk material being posted that is still working within this idea of "imagine, then make a plan, then action" without having questioned one's desires & the limits of imagination within modernity. this is why i find most solarpunk art/writing quite limited in vision & separate from the realities of living with the land.

"modernity conditions us to believe that in order to change reality or our ways of being, we first need to imagine what this change looks like and then make a plan and act to achieve that goal. [...] we will only be able to imagine something genuinely different if we first become suspicious of what we desire and are able to imagine within modernity. this is the first step towards hospicing modernity." - vanessa machado de oliveira in "hospicing modernity"

#ActualSolarPunk is: bike-based. when functioning cars are hard to come by, bikes will still be there for you! they are light, easy to repair, & parts are often interchangeable. up with bikes!

#debugging work continues on the shelf wall. the bottom shelf is not attached yet. i was putting it through a stress test lol.
#ActualSolarPunk involves a great deal of debugging! 😅 and oftentimes patches are only available with whatever you have on hand. so you better have a good junk pile!
luckily this lifestyle is available to anyone today. just be broke enough lol!

#ActualSolarPunk is: sometimes having to drive to home depot for fresh lumber because none of us are free yet.
but when you know how to build with junk, how to repurpose materials, & how much strength/longevity you actually need from materials, you can buy a lot less!
onward to a more #solarpunk future! ^-^
(and just look at the beautiful job we did loading the 2x4's into the truck! very secure!)

#ActualSolarPunk is: replacing the crusted-over water catchment gutter spigot thing with a nice fresh one made from the empty plastic jug that had distilled water you used to top up your weird busted batteries. 😅

#ActualSolarPunk is: you've inherited a bunch of weird batteries and you have no idea how they work. but you want them to work, because if you can get them working, you can have light and power for your laptop in a new part of your place! so you message your electricity wizard friend in another part of the world, u try to locate distilled water, u try to get them working.
